Mirrorlink - update from Skoda UK 29/5/2015

Recommended Posts

Hi, Just got off the phone with Skoda Customer Services !!!!! It would appear that their are solutions being offered but the Kenwood will not be one they also said customers will be treated on a case by case basis so it looks as though it is  the luck of the draw as what solution you will be offered as for me have just told them where to depose of the Garmin so now its down to waiting for the poor bugger who was landed with the Mirror Link complaints desk as they say there is a dedicated person LOL.

Even if you do get the right pieces that are supposed to make it work, the experience is still useless.

I have now tried a Sony Xperia Z3 with Sygic.

Good news: no longer "restricted" on the move.

Bad news: screen rarely updates on the Bolero. I can see it working correctly on the phone - but the display doesn't update. So you'd get lost if you were relying on it, as you are shown to be a couple of miles behind where you actually are.

My dealer says it may be the USB cable, but am using the Sony supplied one. Anyone else had this happen?

Thanks Mick, that's what I thought. I'm going round the dealer again later today, so more ammo is always useful. So you have the m8 then?

Just to confirm, the exact same issue with my Z3, identical in fact.

I think that one sole poor person is called Kate, I phoned earlier, think Kate will be hating her job right about now.

It is indeed - Kate Laws.

Don't feel too sorry for her, she is paid good money not to call you back, and be obnoxious whilst ignoring your concerns.

They have all been trained in the new Skoda school of 'Blissful ignorance'.

The very fact that they have a 'specialist Mirrorlink' person, surely is an admission that there are a fair few p*ssed off Skoda owners out there, with obviously the same kind of concerns.

Not the sort of picture Skoda would want you to imagine.

Can someone give me more information on the Kenwood option.

Am I correct in saying its a stand alone sat nav or will it give the android auto/carplay functions?

I am looking for android auto because google maps and play music are together.

Because they are making offers they are admitting blame.

Case by case is not treating customers fairly.

This is definitely something that needs to be escalated as misselling. Would I be correct that it is not delivered as sold (as we were all I'm the belief there will be updates, which can only have been software).

As both systems connect via USB, surely it is a software update between the two. Amundsen with sat nav will need hardware along with additional SD port for maps.

At the moment when I want sat nav and radio I use the phone screen speaker. Bluetooth allows both google maps and my phone music, using the phone screen and car speakers.

I don't see how, if the mirrorlink stops when in motion, an update cannot be difficult to apply to allow phone apps in motion...... However unsafe this is

Kenwood MIB NAV is a stand alone black box system.

It gives 'high end' Garmin Satnav via the Media button on your current Bolero.

It DOES NOT solve any Mirrorlink issues, so will not give you Android Auto or Apple Carplay.

This is the reason that I have not accepted this as a solution, as it solves nothing.

Skoda seem to be wanting to sidestep Mirrorlink at every turn, because they know that the only thing that will solve customers issues, is a new vehicle.

But remember, Mirrorlink is nothing to do with Skoda!

Serious reality check needed.

What's the situation with the Kenwood option, is it free like the Garmin or is contributory.

I'm not bothered about Mirrorlink but being able to turn the Bolero into a kind of Amundsen like my previous Tech would appeal more.

They want a third of the trade price from me - so estimate about £100.

Looks like quite a good unit, some good videos of it on Youtube.

It is meant to be better than Amundsen, but I have no experience of either.

The Kenwood MIB NAV looks very nice

http://www.advanced-incar.co.uk/vw-garmin-nav-upgrade-for-composition-media

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CebkJM2Ex0Y

  • Garmin
  • 782 Euro
  • 3D
  • Updateable navigation maps
  • 8 M POI

at least a lot better then what pioneer AVIC-F260VAG is offering (interface is ugly and old school)

http://www.pioneer.eu/uk/products/25/111/241/AVIC-F260/specs.html

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ioqx5hvjYis

  • Navteq on SD
  • 419 euro
  • Europe countries
  • 10.9 M POI

They both claim to offer

  • GPS on Bolero / Fabia MK3 radio's
  • By using the MEDIA button
  • listen to the radio at the same time

If Skoda does not come up with a solution, other companies will.

I would accept to pay 1/3 for this Kenwood if it was offered to me, seems to be the best deal available of the moment for some of you.

Dealing with this issue on an individual basis is the easiest way for Skoda not to make a lot of noise, only the ones who speak up gets rewarded, the new way of dealing with customers.

I'm waiting for feedback from the importer and the dealer, patience is required as I have to contact them every week for feedback.

So I have complained for weeks now and they haven't even had the courtesy to keep me updated (much like mirrorlink).

Has anyone contacted the ombudsman or citizens advice? Under the sales of goods act 1996 they have an obligation to find a suitable solution to this problem.

If I bought a phone and it didn't work as described I would have a new one free of charge with a half hearted apology. I can say this is my first and last skoda.

So sorry for my earlier mistake on the goods act date. I am not exactly a legal Eagle.

I have since done some research and if the car is not as described and it is bought on finance this leaves VwFS in breach of contract. The finance provider is legally responsible for the condition of the car under the implied goods act. This in turn leaves you with the legal right to reject the car and receive any money paid towards the contract.

Hope this helps :)

Hello All,

I've been watching this thread for a while with interest as an owner of a pre week 22 2015 Yeti owner.

Hope you don't mind me jumping on this (with me not being a Fabi owner), but I was wondering if anyone knows if the pre week 22 Yeti and Fabia share the same Bolero unit, or if there are differences?

I currently have the "Mirrorlink can be accessed by use of an activation code" message, and have so far had no joy with my supplying dealer with obtaining said code, or whether there are updates available for pre week 22 cars?

I purchased my Yeti on the understanding that it would be available with Mirrorlink, and as such am disappointed that it doesn't work. The car is great, but as others have said, it appears that cars have been sold not as described, and that is annoying to say the least.

Hi Jellemr i am in the same boat as you. My yeti was built feb/march and has the new Bolero head unit in it. It offers mirror link but not smart link.

This new headunit it was introduced into the yeti round about the start of the year. i find it staggering Skoda would start shipping cars with a new headunit only for it to be updated 3-4 months later! My headunit has on the surface anyway the correct hardware forSmartLink - touch screen at correct res, proximity sensors, apple USB etc.

This leads me to think (for the yeti anyway) SmartLink could be introduced with only a firmware upgrade. Or are Skoda just being very awkward. If not a valid explanation of the hardware differences between a MIB2 Bolero in a Yeti built in Feb to one built in May is the least skoda could offer.

Do any super sleuths out there know if the Bolero headunit model number changed to reflect this allegedly new headunit being introduced after week 22?

Hi Mixtu62, I'm in exactly the same situation - mine was built some time in March.

I'd be very interested to know if you hear anything regarding this, I'm of the same opinion, surely a software update is all that is required? - let me know if you get anywhere with it please :)

Skoda say:

Additional hardware is required for the pre week 22 Bolero, which needs to be installed at the point of manufacture.

Therefore, pre week 22 cars CANNOT be swapped or updated to the post week 22 Smartlink system.

Let's face it, it can be done, Skoda just won't do it.

Additional hardware? I'm sure its just a PC with a USB.

It's probable the manufacturer of the bolero are providing the same units but different firmware. It's a 50-50 but they haven't asked for the update to be put onto the pre-22 units.

Amundsen with nav just has additional sat nav SD!

Hmm no the Amundsen has an additional SD and has no CD player. So that would suggest there might be  major hardware differences

Skoda UK have confirmed that it is not simply a software upgrade.

Additional wiring and Hardware is definitely required.

Having said that, if they really wanted to put this extra hardware into our cars, then they could find a way.

They just don't want to.

Every offer Skoda have made me would cost them all of about £100, which is pathetic when I have a car at an RRP of over £20k.

This includes an offer of £100 ish towards a new car - ummm let me think.............NO TA!

Skoda have a dedicated Mirrorlink complaints person in place, they know they are at fault.

What really winds me up, is that they want me to contribute towards this Kenwood MIB NAV, and the dealer also.

So what they are basically saying is that it is as much mine and the dealers fault as them, which I find deeply offensive.

They are being very sly, by trying to only pay for a third of it.

I don't know what has happened down at Skoda, but they need to reverse it quickly.

Their new 'not our problem' attitude is going to see them tumble down the customer service ratings at an astonishing rate.

HI Kev good effort pushing Skoda on this!

Did Skoda identify what the additional hardware was?  Im not sure about the Fabia but in the Yeti the New Bolero MIB2 is just a head unit.

Again i find it hard to believe that extra hardware is needed. Any car that has bluetooth will have mics etc...

If they just said    "a new bolero and xyz will cost £600 plus installation" then i would believe them but the fact they are not i find strange.
