Very disillusioned Superb owner

Featured Replies

I bought a Superb 2009 1.8 TSi Elegance DSG   a couple of weeks ago. Reading all the comments above it seems that I couldn't have chosen a worse model ??

Hardly , I'm sure you paid an appropriate price , the person who really lost out was whoever bought it new, depreciation from this point on with be small , plus lower mileage will make it more attractive when you do come to sell it. Its the ideal model imo

Worst models for depreciation is the 3.6 no doubt

I have followed this thread with interest, hoping to learn if you have had problems with the car not doing what it said on the tin. All the points that have been made are very relevant. I do however remain unsure why you are disillusioned with the car.

The car seems from what you say to have served you well. It is only now, when you have come to sell that you cannot get the price you want for the vehicle. That is a problem between you and the second hand car market rather than with the Skoda Superb, as the issue you are objecting to happens to all cars at some point in their lifetime. As others have already said, cars depreciate most when new, and the next significant dip is when a replacement model comes out. Though if you hold on to the car, the depreciation rate will usually stabilise after a while when the new model settles into the market.

Part of the issue is that now the OP wants to trade his car could be that the main dealer he bought the car may not sell it themselves as it's now 6 years old. If that's the case it would explain why because they then either off load it to another non franchise dealer or send it to auction. Though TBF the amount he's 'lost' over the 3 years he's had it isn't as bad as the same depreciation he'd suffer buying a new car then trading that 3 years later. IIRC the 20% vat back offer was on at the time he bought his and was available on the Superbs after so has probably afffected 2nd hand values as well as the new model. Big cars normally mean big depreciation as said and we don't know if the OP traded a car in and what he got. Again as said it's all about cost to change and the profit margins of the dealer so selling private may bring you more and also put you in a strong position to buy another car afterwards. Good luck

On the basis the OP hasn't responded, and if he does, it doesn't appear we'll put his mind at rest anyway.

Interestingly, I just got my mate in the trade to check out the pricing on CAP of our 170 Elegance Manual with 27k we bought last August for £13k and guess what.... its only gone and depreciated to £11k - what a shocker (not!) :D

Incidentally, the price he's been offered trade is on the money for an "S" with 55k @ £4.8k but low on an SE or Elegance with +£400 each step up...

I don't really use the car during the week (work in London so use the train every day) So economy wasn't that great an issue for me as it will be used  just at weekends mainly which is another reason why I thought petrol would be better than diesel?.  Truth is I love the car, I had an Avensis hatchback and before that  a Passat which I loved. Trouble is after having the hatchback I couldn't go back to a boot so when Skoda came along with the twin boot I thought it was brilliant idea. My elegance is black with cream leather and I find the acceleration pretty good compared to my 1.8 Avensis (auto also). I love the car and when I read some reviews on the 1.8 TSi there was no mention of gearbox problems. The car has currently done 78k and will be lucky to do 5k a year from now on.

Then forget what others say and continue to love the car. I still have the "worse model" MKI with the "worst" diesel engine that has ever graced the roads of the world in the eyes of many, namely the dreaded PD140 2.0! It has now covered 122k and yes, the oil pump broke at 100k, but it was sorted out with SUK providing the parts as goodwill, and a £600 bill for labour which I collected which, given I wont have an oil pump issue again (it was the modded version fitted) and a new turbo, cambelt and water pump. I bought the car with 10k in 2007 and basically had some annoying failures in those 90k before the oil pump gave up, but nothing too significant. I had a Mondeo ST200 in 2000 which, along with numerous other owners cars, through a piston through the block after 8k! That was also down to a poor design, but there must be 100's of those still driving about that have never had a single issue. I'd just continue to love the car - the Elegance spec is lovely and black with the cream interior looks very, well, elegant - just like our MKI in fact!

Thanks for the votes of confidence. I will try and post some pics when I get a chance.  With all the talk on here about the completely new model I thought I'd look at some pics and reviews. It certainly is a complete change from the MKII Superb (bit like Passat when they again radically changed the great looking MKII (which I had for quite a few years) to what I thought was a really ordinary looking MkIII but that's just my opinion)

I think the MKIII Superb looks good and rather like the merc don't you think?

My 2 year old 2011 14,000 mile used Superb CR140 was cheap when I bought it two years ago (£12,000) from a main dealer.

The MkII has always been a steal.

I bought it cheap and will no doubt sell it cheap when the time comes.

Yes, d'ya know what? It does.. A bit, I think.... Or maybe it's a new Passat? Or even an edgy Phaeton? Or hang on.... is it Audi "A" something or t'other perhaps?!? So.... I agree with many on here; the MKII was a bit odd, a bit different, a bit... well, radical...and I like that. I first drove a MKII in 2009 when my MKI was in the dealer having some brake issues resolved and I absolutely loved it-I wanted one, but I was prepared to wait (error.. HAD to wait....!) And then I got one last year and I love it (and I still love the MKI too!). Now I really think the MKIII Is the opposite of these. It's a "nice" or even "safe" design, but one which I'm sure will be very successful for the Skoda "brand".... So, if you're different, a bit, y'know.... well, there you go, just continue to enjoy you MKII 1.8TSI! (and what's the spec for chrissake!?).

Elegance, (cream leather) with I guess all the usual spec such as Columbus Sat Nav, Elec folding wing mirrors, bluetooth phone, cd changer in the boot (only just found this !!)as well as single cd player. Heated and memory seats, auto wipers, auto lighting with  arriving and leaving home lighting up!! Oh and I guess maybe an extra it has electric sliding sunroof with solar panel (apparently can store up enough energy and then turn on the blowers to cool the car down) although I've not checked this out yet. Still getting used to all the gadgets. It has aux in the armrest but would have been good if it had mdi connection (i know you can get this added) so that I can charge my ipod and see the tracks via the screen. But I think I can live without this. The alloys are 18" Thermistos which do need some work on them and looking on other threads on here as they are diamond cut the advice is that I should just get them recoated normally as the diamond cut doesn't last long?

Cheers

Well, that's a lovely car. Enjoy it. The solar roof and CD Stack were both expensive options I think.... The MIDI connection seems to get the thumbs down in general. I connect my iPhone via Bluetooth and that works fine. My Thermos are good, but just like just every other million unit PA manufacturers wheels, it won't be long before they get grotty....

Thank You

Thank You

No problem... Stop worrying. its a lovely car.....

Try leasing one. That way you don't hsve any depreciation, always have a new car and any problems are the lease company's

Interesting... So you do not consider the rental you're paying out is the same as depreciation? I'm afraid if that's the case, you're deluding yourself! Money out is money out, whichever way you look at it...

Lings cars can do a Skoda Octavia 2.0ltr TDI CR SE 5 door on a 3 year lease for only £13094. The same car can be bought new from drive the deal for £18230. No road tax to pay on the lease car so that'll save about £60 (not really worth mentioning).

Thing is, that's based on 10k miles per year. If you do 15k miles per year then the three year cost is £14060. Take the initial cost of buying the car and subtract the lease cost, and the difference is £4170. So if you thing a 3 year old Skoda Octavia with 45k miles on it is going to be worth less than £4170 then leasing is the way forward. If you reckon it's going to be worth more than 4 grand, then buy the thing and accept that sometimes you're going to have to suffer depreciation to drive a car.

I was on the understanding that is what leasing and PCP's were all about.

The deposit (where applicable) combined with the monthly payments were covering exactly that - the depreciation?

Plus a little profit for the retailer / finance house.

Surely if you lease a brand new £30,000 car that is worth £20,000 after the lease period you will be paying the £10,000 depreciation (plus a little bit more) over the lease period?

Precisely. You cannot beat depreciation.... If you've bought a car, it loses value every month, you pay out for maintenance, RFL, consumables etc. If you rent a car - which is all a PCP is - you pay out cash on a deposit, and then a rental every month, to cover the depreciation, maintenance, RFL, consumables....

You bought at retail (and right at the top of the price scale by the looks of it) & are selling at wholesale.    It's compounded by what appears to be a 10 month ownership cycle(??) or that you have a time travel machine (you say you purchased in Aug 2015).

The dealer might be having a lend of you too so don't be afraid to shop around.

Exactly. Good advise there from brad1.8T, Unionfan....

The other downside is that Lings cars webpage can give you epilepsy ! lol

For those that have never visited , here goes

Apologies to all the critics and posters who seem to feel I'm in some way niaive... We're not idiots and don't expect the car to appreciate for heaven's sake!

I haven't posted due to lack of web connectivitiy over the last week or so.  Thast said, all thoughts are welcome and interesting and we will indeed be keeping our Superb for a good while yet.  In fact, the new Euro-headlights arrived yesterday and will be fitted so we can re-register it here in France.

To answer a couple of points about the gearbox though, we too had the DSG overhauled and problems between 1st and 2nd repaired under warranty.

Carry on driving in the sunshine all emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif

Welcome back and sorry for the "sharp" comments on values. I'm pleased that you now intend to hang-on to the Superb; you've certainly taken the brunt of depreciation now, so forget it and carry-on enjoying it..!
