Regazing AC

Featured Replies

Looks like my AC needs regazing has anyone done this DIY

Not aware it can be done DIY at all, you need the correct equipment to evacuate what remains of the gas and place a vacuum on the system to remove any water present before adding fresh oil and gas by weight into the system. The AC system does not contain just gas, but a small quantity of oil, and gas is not measured by pressure but weight as the pressure varies based on how hard the compressor is working. To much gas and you'll kill the compressor, to little gas and you get an ineffective system.

I had my Audi system done professionally locally for less than £40.

The only time I gazed my AC was whilst it was being regassed! ;) By a professional, which is how I know that #2 is correct.

Yes it's possible

Do not use the can,

Repeat do not use the can, whilst they can do the job you'll never get the weight of gas correct. To much and the compressor will have to work to hard to circulate it and fail prematurely, to little and the system will not cool your properly.

Ok I will get it done by professionals any idea of cost

Around £40 usually.

About £40 as mentioned, by the time you buy the can from Halfords with trigger it costs more than getting it done right. The can alone is £40.

Ok I'm sold to the professionals I go HALFORDS?

Halfords will do it, Kwik fit as well. Kwik Fit will not charge you if the air temperature does not drop from the vents either.

IIRC the government were trying to stop people doing them DIY due to the types of gases.

As others have said getting it regassed should be cheap enough either at Kwikfit (or similar if you trust them) or a dealer

Or also free if their is a fault stopping it working.  Colleague at work got his regassed FOC by kwikfit because of this, and the dealer fixed his AC issue for £20!

Vag systems go into safe mode (do not operate) if pressure is incorrect so deffo have to get a specialist to do it.

Its an easy job with the right equipment so just search around for the cheapest price

The kwikfit service is the best via high street outlets because of their guarantee should it make FA difference.

However, by shirking at the price the dealer wanted to charge me, they actually price matched Kwikfit, so worth asking your dealer whilst its in!

Maybe that was what happened with my colleage, and VW simply reset it for him with VAS?

Thats just what skoda told me so i do not know if it is true just what the guy told me. It was years and years ago though

Gadgetman,

i remember asking before if you ever have worked in a tyre and exhaust centre and i wonder if you have ever worked in a

Garage workshop, on cars that is?

Kwik-Fit best.

Well that is interesting,  rubbish but interesting.

Yes George I know their reputation, but a regas is pretty much plug it in and press a button as I understand it, which is why kwikfit, ATS etc can offer this.  There was a time I recall reading a high number of temp check post regas was done incorrectly, meaning some very happy customers.  Mr Lewis even had it in his weekly newsletter.

We now use ATS at work, and they are shocking.I'd have to say worse than National, which takes some beating to be that bad in my experience.

The guarantee is the only reason for recommending using Kwikfit for a regas.

Well it looks as if my compressor has failed ! A known issue apparently with mk5 and mk6 golf , if they run a denso or Delphi compressor they fail around 40-70k miles , now they fitted the senden compressor which is fault free ! VW know it's crap but no recall bloody vag ! £1400 to repair ! Think I'm going to just open the window

Check the compressor is getting a power supply

I had a power cable snapped on mine (it ran across the front of the car right at the edge of the front bumper)

Remove the sump guard and have a look and try and trace the cable out

Compressor is turning ,light comes on dash , fuse ok , the radiator fan is not turning , I think I'm going to re gas and then see where I am , so much for German engineering eh !

The radiator fan is possibly not turning because it is not at a time when it is required to.

Compressor failure is common place on the Golf (Octavia too), the Delphi ones are awful. If they crap themselves internally it's a new compressor, condenser and a full flush of the system.
