From 2012 Mazda6 has got engine made differently... SkyActive

Both petrol (SkyActive-G) and diesel (SkyActive-D) got high compression 14:1 (usually diesel engine got arround 18:1)

Petrol engine has no issue. Diesel had one on erly begining... They used incorrect material to make camshaft... to soft. Mazda Motor Corp. is repairing them when owners come to dealer. After that no issue at all.

US petrol engine are different because they use lower octan fuel and engine compression is 13:1

One problem with Mazda6... If you buy it with navi... you can forgot about map updates... That's a big problem. Owners got maps more than 1 year old (last update)

So, if i got one of 2010 /11 vintage and brougjt it to dealer they would do the camshaft replacement if not already done?? Think i may to ring a couple of them and see what the story is..

No... That engines are MZR-CD:

 - RF7 (2.0) code

- R2 (2.2) code

These engines are older construction... and got some problem with DPF... That problem is more about driving technic than about engine issue...

Issues are still the same. With the gen 2 just make sure the injector seals have been changed at 75k service or make sure they get done at that service. Regular oil changes and decent drives should keep the oil pickup at bay but you could always have the sump taken off and checked every once in a while. And count on a timing belt change, they stretch regardless and don't believe people who say they've changed their design, they haven't! It will cost about £600 or atleast it did me. Mazda will give a good will contribution if it has full Mazda history and under 5 years old. Other than that, it's a decent car to drive, drives better than a Octavia and just as much room. But a octy will probably cost less to own. Swings and roundabouts.

Yes, Always check injector seal and all above but these are all about maintenance... Are low cost and preventing job...

The engine R2 has got a timing chain, RF7 has got a timing belt...

Both engine are less effective (mpg) because DPF is cleaning by adding ON into it... not add blue system...

Yeah sorry, I miss typed, all the 2.2 gen 2s had chains, as mine did, however all the chains eventually stretch, some cars are on their third chain. Every service the car has at a Mazda dealer, they use the ecu to read the chain tensioner and once it gets a reading higher than about 10 they advise changing the chain. I'd say it's imperative to get one with full Mazda dealer service history.

Injector seal service @ 75k costs between £700 and £1200 (according to Mazda 6 owners group and depending on where you are) I have no idea where their is such a massive price difference, border cars Mazda dealer, Workington quoted £900, PV Dobson, again Mazda main dealer at Kendal quoted £700, I can't understand why. However a lot of people miss this service out along with the 62.5k gearbox oils service.

Injector seal chenge set should cost about £ 30 for parts plus labour at dealer site £90 per hour. I can't see why it cost £ 700 - 900... Probably they doing more service jobs...

Engine R2 had an issue with a chain but Mazda improved ECU software to read and interprate correctly this parametr...

Most of chains have been changed under warranty...

The theme here seems to be to avoid the diesels like the plague?

Every older Mazda 6 I see has rusty arches, there is no worse advert for Mazda when all their cars are rotting. Let's hope they've learnt from their mistakes with the latest one.

Yeah that price includes a full service, it also includes other items that are one use is high pressure injector lines that once removed can't be re used. Or do I was told.

True many will have had the chains replaced however since no design changes have taken place, the replacement chains also stretch. Mazda only gave me a 2 year or 36,000 mile warranty on the replacement chain.

Ouch my mum had a 2002 323F from new. That started to rot after 18months on both rear wheel arches. Was then back and forth every few years till it came to 6 years old and Mazda said no more. Had to be scrapped last year as a large chunk fell out. We said all along we wanted new panels but was told no this will sort it

Mazda6 II gen is free from that anyway...

From 2008 Mazda went to soft painting technology (thanks to eco trends). This mean body panels are very easy to scratch... So, you need to look for "chips", "spiders" and deep scratches. If not treated by paint stick you will have to paint panel.

Right, so to go diesel in my bracket, with a gen2, it needs full mazda service history, to have been driven distance trips not short hops but not ragged (like most diesels really), had the chain done, seals changed, and be prepared for more chains needed. Check the arches for rustiness and paint chips in general..

Okay!

Check the arches for rustiness ..

That was I gen...

I put 75k over three years on a 59 plate Mazda 6 Sport Hatch, the one with the 185 engine.

It was in Metallic White which looked absolute class in the right light!

Was recalled for the timing chain and rusty valves in the tyres (special TPM ones) and that was it, loved the car.

/\ that what i want to hear :D

  • 2 years later...

Have a 2012 AWD CX-5 with a 150PS 2.2 Skyactiv-D engine: a wonderful car... when it works.

Had it towed to a dealer with a low-oil pressure alarm - probable cause: wrong injector fastener tightening torque, consequent combustion blow-by into an oil-sprayed space, oil partially degraded into tar that washes down into the sump and clogs the oil pump suction strainer, hence low-pressure.

Facing an unreasonably high repair bill, around 3-week car downtime, MAZDA is aware of this since at least Feb. '17, no recalls yet where I live (Italy). In Germany they reportedly called in around 61,000 2.2D-powered Mazdas for checking and fixing.

Isn't this enough to scare you away from a 2.2 Mazda?

Made me love my TDI Octavia even more...
