Pre-registered cars

Featured Replies

Spoke to a dealership today that gave me a quote via carwow with regards to a new car and discounts etc. They've given me a price but it's for a Pre-registered 'demo' car but on the carwow website the bit underneath the price says band new unregistered. It's about £600 less than the next cheapest price and from a dealer not a million miles away from me.

The salesman was very up front and said I'd be the second owner but it would be registered to them the day before I collect and then to me on the day I collect to allow them to get demo car discount. It would come with delivery mileage only.

The question is, would you/should I? I've already asked for a price with me as the first owner.

Are you still getting the same finance deals as on a new car?
As long as it's registered to you the next day then I wouldn't be too concerned if the price is attractive.

What you have to watch with pre reg cars is, that fact you are the second owner most insurance company's do not give you the like for like in the event of a total Wright off in the first year.

If the £600 is the difference between a new and pre-reg then it's not a good deal. Pre-reg is usually a good bit cheaper than new i.e. When I bought a pre-reg it was nearly 40% cheaper then the same car new. SWMBO did the same and got about 25% on hers.

It is a 'new' car but the price drop should be closer to the depreciation you'd get on a new car as soon as you sign for it.

Had an email earlier, the gap between the two is just over £1k.its not Pre-registered in the true sense of the word as it'll have been registered for a day before its transferred to me.

On one hand I think, £1k is £1k and when I come to sell after 4yrs it probably won't make a big difference, but then I think I'm missing the catch!

The £1k difference isn't off list, one is nearly 15% discount on list, the other nearer 10%,all rough figures.

Pre-reg is pre-reg. If I see your figures right, they're giving you £600 for it being reg'd over the other place being unreg'd? So their sales target bonus and ordinary profit is at least £600, . I'd want more of their bonus.

I have just bought a pre-registered car with 7 delivery miles on the clock. My saving over the same spec car unregistered was about £2k.

I have no real intention of getting shot so not too bothered about a "first owner" on paper exercise :)

My vRS was ex demo with 6k miles when I bought that at a considerable discount and at trade-in I just got £10.5k on a 2012 CR170!

Which I was really happy with as most dealers were offering around £9.5k so in effect the discount on the pre reg was almost £3k!! so the ex demo (1st owner) didn't have much effect on trade price either for me.

I dont know if a dealer can pre-reg and then sell before its 3 months old??

good way to get it cheap though.

my last 4 buys:

6 month old. rrp 14200 paid 9100

pre reg 0 miles rrp 15200 paid 10200

brand new rrp 17100 paid 13400

brand new rrp 13500 paid 9000

pre reg or new?

pre reg with zero miles is great, but you do lose 3 months of the guarantee at least, sometimes more.

for instance, I could have bought the most recent one pre reg at 600 less, say 8400 but, it was already 11 months old and thats a big chunk of a 36 month guarantee to give up.

also dealers often advertise their demos as zero miles pre reg, and when you phone up it's got 3000 miles on a a courtesy car. Dont want one of those.

Is the car Euro 6 compliant?

If not, you'll want a lot more discount than 10-15% I'd say.

Any Euro 5 car cannot be sold as new from Sep 1st.

I expect most have been pre-reg already, or massively discounted, like the 33% I got off a Euro5 motor yesterday with no haggling.

Thanks for the help. The car would be a factory order by me, then registered to the garage as a demo the day before I pick it up then registered to me on the day I pick it up. I would have the V5C in the same time frame as if I were the first owner. I was told that it would have delivery miles only and that it wouldn't be driven by anyone else. The actual difference between the pre reg and one having me as the first owner is approx. £1200 not £600 as I originally thought.

Why would they do this? Seems very odd

I dont know if a dealer can pre-reg and then sell before its 3 months old??

When I sold em, you couldn't register and sell the next day if you wanted demo discount. Well you could on the odd one or two if you got permission from the manufacturer, but it sounds like it's normal practice here? Very odd. Probably OK, but I'd be wary and want to know more.

whats the normal discount a dealer gets for a demo, I need a bargaining tool, why is itthey adverise cars as new but registered they not new

There have been posts before about dealers selling pre registered/ demo cars before and it appears that the dealer is required by Skoda UK to have the car for 3 months to qualify for the discounted price. The outcome of this is that if the dealer sells the car before 3 months then they try and keep the V5 for 3 months so qualify for largely discounted price, and sell it on for slightly less than retail and make a large profit. If you are still happy with the deal make sure you get the V5 right away as your insurance require you to be the registered keeper.

Good point KennyR made, make sure you get the V5 at the time of handover!

If they cannot give you the little slip off the V5 and come up with an excuse that it has not come in from DVLA be aware the chances are you will not see it for a while, if they are claiming to offer you "ex-demo" discount :(

As said above by many, the dealers must keep "Demonstrators" a set time that is a big difference to a plain old pre-,registered jobbie.

Mine was a straight forward pre-registered car with delivery miles and was 3 weeks old going on the first registered new date, which the dealer openly showed me before finalising the deal.

Totally agree with you!!

I would work on the basis of 20% off

I'd be very worried that the dealer went into liquidation with the V5 still in their possession. It would be a world of pain to get back then :( Nobody seemed to predict Carcraft would close it's doors so quickly as happened recently

Simples.

If the car is 'First Registered' to someone else, Dealership or Manufacturer it is a 'Previously Owned Car',

Even with 3 miles Delivery, never out of the showroom, or a Demonstrator.

So not a New Pre Registered, just a 'New Pre Owned with a Former Keeper' once you are the New Keeper.

& as the Registered Keeper changes the VED even if Free is no Longer Valid and the DVLA need the New Registered Keepers Details,

just as the Insurance Company want to know the Registered Keeper, Owner & Named Drivers.

You decide what you want to buy, pay, if you want to be Second Registered Keeper,

and is the Discount as good as Buying a 'New Model' already in Stock, not yet First Registered.

Warranty not yet running, and if Finance is Required, is the new one better for you than the 'Pre Registered'.

We paid the balance of the car when we collected it from the dealer (purchased through Carwow) so all you stand to ‘lose’ is the deposit... pay that via a credit card and you should also get that back if they go under.

Thanks for the help, I decided to go for the brand new one in the end.

A moot point now but I agree with the others in that a pre-reg has to be 'owned' by the dealer for 3 months before they can sell. SWMBO got hers as a car that had just been put on the road as a demonstrator. The dealer agreed to put it into storage until the 3 months were up.

A dealers name as an owner doesn't bother me. If I can see that it was a pre reg I just don't count the first owner. Pre reg is just about the ideal way to buy a car tbh. You get a 'new' car, big discount and only lose 3 months of warranty.

Enjoy your new motor

One thing to be wary off is the finance packages available.

Being a pre-reg, it is not applicable for the (usually pretty good) finance packages SUK offer, like the regular 0% weekends or 2.9%/4.9% on the vRS.

About a year ago, SWMBO bought a Citigo as a runaround... However, she "had" to have a Sport and therefore wanted the white pre-registered car in the showroom. Cue a shocking APR (8.9%) through the dealers alternative finance and hardly any discount on the bloody car.

Worst. Deal. I've. Ever. Made.   :dull:

I did similar but got dealer to add 1 extra year to warranty. Car with 25 delivery miles on clock part of a large dealership upfront "bulk" introduction buy from VW. So they had plenty of margin to negotiate with me. Cracking deal done!

Have my doubts as to possibility of the same on a R400 ,when and if it will available.

Well, if you really need a SAAB AJ-37 then I'd agree. ;)
