Normalising Mp3s

Featured Replies

Can anyone suggest a decent (and preferably free) software utility to normalise MP3s?

cheers.... :D

Do you mean convert them to wav etc?

Normalise - explain, normalise, or do I have to ask Tom?

I think Tom can only DE-normalise!! :D

I use Exact Audio Copy to extract and create mp3s from audio CDs. It's very good and I'm pretty sure you can just normalise existing mp3s.

It is of course free :D

Plus, you can chose which mp3 codec you prefer and use the codec to its best ability (BladeEnc, Lame...)

Normalise is the process of equalising many mp3 files so that when you play them back they all play at the same volume. So you dont need to keep turning the volume up and down after each track.

I use audiograbber, but you have to pay for that.

IIRC.. i think Nero 6 has either an option, or a plugin to do that..

or if all else fails theres always *ahem* windoze media player 9. which once you get the free nero fast burining plugin is quite handy (if you dont have nero) :D

Doh!...................

I use Audiograbber too.....

As Manny said, Normalising is an attempt to make sure that a set of MP3s will all play back at a similar volume. Recently I ripped a set of CDs I own (all by the same artist) in order to make my own "best of" compilation. Some tracks were ok, others you could hardly hear...!

AG sounds like a good option.... :D

Aaargh, I know of a real good normaliser, but the name just escaped me... It does all sorts of fancy stuff...

Not really useful is it now?

Not very useful if you can't remember it, no..... :D

I need to sort something out for making MP3's and normalising them too as I wanna get an MP3 head unit and not worry about an autochanger in the boot. Looks like there is a few idea's on here for freebies! ;)

Have you tried a search engine for any software companies Steve? Like Google or something.

Try www.cdngo.com. It's FREE and rips & burns MP3 CD's. If I remember rightly (it has been a while since I used it) it did have a mass-normalisation facility (but like I said, it's been a while, so do quote me on that). It is a good piece of software for ripping anyway :D

Musicmatch Jukebox also has a built-in normalizer. Does that still have a free version? And is the normalizer included in that?

DB PowerAmp has a normalise function - it's fast, free and here

http://www.geocities.com/mp3gain/ is the bugger I was thinking off.

For me, my legally cracked version of Audiocatalyst has a "normalise" tickbox, so I tick it. simple as that.

It makes MP3s good enough, that when they're "wav'ed" for CD writing, they play in the car pretty fine, just perhaps not lasting quite as long as an original, but then I just re-write it... :D
