Diesel Power

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

I'm seriously considering purchasing a diesel car sometime in the future but, having never owned or driven a car running on Satans fuel I have a few questions.
Are they as fast as a petrol engined car? lets say I had a 200hp petrol car and a 200hp diesel which is quickest? Also in terms of power, how do they drive. I hear diesels have a narrow power band but how does that affect acceleration and overtaking stuff? I love the idea of a powerful diesel with cheap tax and MPG. Was thinking something like a BMW 320d or if I had the money a 335d

Thanks for any input

Powerful yes, Cheap tax yes ''at the moment'', good MPG yes, You get a low down torque with a diesel unlike some petrol engines..

They don't drive the same so you can't just compare paper figures.

Diesel usually have more torque.

Government is about to stamp on diesel owners at the behest of the EU.

Although diesels make less CO2 they make more NOx and particulates. The EU has decided that although CO2 is still bad NOx and particulates are worser.

They drive completely different.

200bhp petrol vs diesel doesn't tell the whole story. The diesel will have more torque so they are usually easier to get going quickly without having to rev them.

A petrol delivers it's torque higher up the rev range.

I personally love driving diesel. I like that I can just tickle the throttle and the car will pull itself along at 1500 to 2000rpm without batting an eyelid.

It also means you can get the car up to speed without having to rev the engine over 3000rpm or less most of the time.

Plus when you do floor it and let it rev it still flies.

maybe hes very short. You lasted more than me if you got half way...

I've had diesels and petrols over the years.

Petrol wins for me.

Diesel for necessity, petrol for fun.

My last car was a diesel. Now I have a petrol. I havent missed the diesel for one second, except when refuelling....

A diesel will feel stronger, but it looses its breath much sooner when flooring it.

Test drive a 320d and a 320 petrol. I prefer diesel but then I have never owned a powerful petrol car (over 120bhp).

A new modern diesel drives similar to a petrol , diesel for now is cheaper to run but the wind has changed, however the mpg is no longer a purchasing factor due to very frugal petrol engines now available !

I had to go diesel as the Touran we bought was so much better in fuel than the equivalent petrol.

2.0 tdi dsg 140 BM tech

vs

1.4T dsg 140 BM tech.

Same power but 6 speed dsg in the diesel and 7 speed in the petrol. 15-20 mpg more which is important as a load/kid lugger needs to be frugal and fun. I could have only had the latter with the petrol.

Depends on what driving you do and what you want a car for though, and I appreciate not everyone has a 7 seater diesel

Drove a 1.6TDI and 1.2TSI back to back.  TSI was smooth revvy and quiet.  Diesel was not smooth, quite gruff.

Also the extra weight messed up the ride and steering.

So now I happily put up with 45-50mpg. Rather than the 60+ I could have got.

Must say to be fair, not all diesels are as rough as this modern VW one.

My last car was a 2000 Proton with a 1991 design Mitsubishi 2.0TD - and it was smoother and quieter than the 2013 VW, if not so economical.

I must admit I found the same with the 1.6tdi and the 1.2tsi, the petrol was much more fun and felt faster.

I'd buy a petrol sports car over a diesel one that's for sure.
