The 280PS Thread

Ah. I was about to say 'but after 2,000 miles surely it'd have reset before now?'. Then I realised our average speed is usually around 20mph (all those town journeys), which gives 2,000 miles for a reset. Thank you for saving me from torturing myself, but I still think it should not reset.

Maybe it;s possible for someone with VCDS to alter the reset time, but it's always been 100 hours of engine running time on all our VAG cars.

We keep manual records too, so producing actual long-term consumption figures is simple.

Engine numbers.

Having visually compared Prykey's 280 & hkp's Golf R engines, I'm wondering if they share the same engine number series.

The Golf R engine number is CJX + 6 digits, if anyone has the time to peek at their car or it's documentation I'd like to know what the 3-letter engine code is.

Mine is CJX

Just tried a throttle response box on a friends car. What a difference, I am ordering one myself. It has 6 modes. The third one makes the throttle response as good as our 1.2 fabia tsi. That's how bad the standard response feels on my 280... The fourth mode is perfect for most times, the last two I would only use on the track.

Thanks.

I'm wondering if the claimed 280 ps is a "conservative" figure ?

ISTR that SWMBO's octy vRS 2 FL with the 2.0 TSi lump was rated at 200 ps when the equivalent Mk 6 Golf GTi was giving 211 ps.

When my 2012 Superb Mk.2 (same engine as the ocy & GTi) was mapped, the before output was 214 ps......

Thanks.

It is exactly the same engine, just with a different map and exhaust so it should have the same potential with mapping and bolt-ons

We need someone to get one on a Dyno :-)

Which brand box are you getting micloi? Interested to hear how you find it.

I would rather not write this in the thread, do not want people to think I am advertising a specific brand.

Anyway, most throttle response boxes are doing the same job so I would go with the cheapest one (and I did ;) )

I never bought one for any of my previous (20) cars as I did not see the need but the Superb really needs one.

It transforms the pedal from "mushy" to "springy" to put it in 'technical' terms :) :) :)

ps. I did do the VCDS mod that improved the response a little but it was certainly nothing compared to what the box can do.

Me too!!!

Me too!!!

Me three! It's not advertising, it's expressing your preference. ;) Just tell us please, I'd be very interested in getting one!

Edit: Is it the DTUK pedalbox? I just spoke to their MD and he said they have one for the 280 and 220. At less than £180 it's a no brainer if it works as well as they say.

My friend bought (and I also tried on his car) the one from Racechips. Will either order the same one or the DTUK one depending on the Euro/Pound exchange rate in the next few days.

Waiting first confirmation if it affects the car warranty in any way before I place an order.

I've just had a look at the racechips box also, and they look great for the relatively small cost. Seriously considering ordering one now as the throttle response is the only thing spoiling the car imho.

Sorry to add another post but I've just been out to look at my car. Does the pedal box plug into the little plug connector visible at the very top of the throttle pedal? It looks a little tight if so. Did your friend need to remove the pedal to fit the box or is it possible to do it without removing the pedal first? My finger is itching to press 'checkout' and buy this thing. :D

Yes, I helped him install it. Plugs on the top of the pedal and there is plenty of space, only took a minute. Then the wire/handset goes from the rear into the small compartment on the right side of the steering wheel so it is hidden out of side. You would not know it's there. That's what made me want to get it as I do not like things that seem out of place in the car.

Sold! I'm going to order the RaceChips one, just because the DTUK one 'only' has three/four modes (they say three in one place, four in another). The RaceChips has the extra two modes which can only mean more granular control over the throttle response (at least, logic says so). Hopefully this will help me enjoy the car more in auto mode (D), as it's really hard work getting corners just right with such a mushy response. It invariably ends up delaying and then changing gear just when you don't want it to!

Edit: Now ordered. I was a bit wary of ending up with buyer's remorse but they offer a 30 day money back guarantee anyway, and I paid by credit card and through PayPal for double protection. Just in case. :D I'll report back how I find it if anyone's interested.

I've had the VCDS tweak, it did help, but the R is still less responsive than my Superb.

(Been out in the SuperB this evg, & really noticed the difference, 'tis a pity that it's not used that often!)

As for fitting a "box", it might well be a good idea but I'm not so happy about fitting it.

We will consider our options............

Cheers, DC

Would you care to volunteer?

Needs to be a place that can cope with AWD though.

I'm not sure I'm 'that' bothered :-)

I'm very interested in comments on ease of fitting, if it works and whether its worth the money please :)

Just completed a mixed roads trip to Devon of 530 odd miles (Motorway, Fast A Roads, Slow A Roads, B Roads and Unclassified Roads) with stop start traffic on the M25 and tiny country lanes in Devon with passing places and got an average of 34.9 mpg, I'm well happy with that :)

Whoopeee July has arrived!

Not long to go now until until the start of my 280 build begining the week of 19th July.

Excited to be getting one step closer.

Well that was a highly entertaining drive :-) I don't mind how it changes up into second when you hit the limiter in manual. Plenty of 1st, 2nd and third gear work.... Great fun. Windows down, 80's Synth music blasting out in the 30mph areas then hit mute before engaging warp drive into the national speed limits.

Nice and slowly past the cyclists gives plenty of 1st gear opportunities :-)

What a fantastic engine !

Great fun !

Only downside is my eyes are not itching like #uck !

The best kind of drive. :) Our car passed 2,500 miles last week and I think it's true what they say. It seems suddenly much looser and the MPG has shot up significantly even on short trips. You can't beat a B road blast.
