The 280PS Thread

Featured Replies

PistonHeads have done a little article on the 280, with some interesting comments in the discussion. One guy thinks it's beyond bland (I disagree, though it's not as emotionally captivating as some other marques imho), but the general consensus is good. I thought you might like to read it.

Which winter tyres are you running?

Most likely I will get the Continental WinterContact TS 850 P235/45R18 98 V XL

So, I've just got back from Germany, did a total of 904 miles with an average speed of 44mph and an average fuel consumption of 33.0 mpg although that doesn't tell the whole story as we had over an hour of stop/start traffic due to road works and rush hour traffic on our 1st day and over an hour today queuing for road works on the E40 and at least 45-minutes stopped on the A16 due to some French Industrial action by Port Workers who shut the slip to the Eurotunnel exit causing absolute chaos in the process.

My average before I left the hotel this morning was 34.9 mpg.

I'm really pleased with this, my mates E93 BMW M3 was showing an average of 24mpg before the A16 episode!

We are heading for the Rhineland next week, from Dunkirk, any routes we should avoid ?

Usually head for Liege & Aachen, then Cologne, but I can't remember the E numbers for that route.

Hi DC,

From you saying Dunkirk I'm assuming that you are using the DFDS Ferry, not wishing to tempt fate I have to say that I've never had any issues getting to and from the port in Dunkirk, the bone heads normal choice is Calais for their protests as they get maximum coverage as it usually cocks up both the Port and Eurotunnel.

We went A16, E40, E17, E34, A73, A74 and A61 as we went to Classic Remise in Dusseldorf (http://remise.de/Classic-Remise-Duesseldorf-english-summary.php) as our 1st port of call; I'm pretty sure that you would like especially its location as its an "historic roundhouse for locomotives", entrance is free to and the cars on display are always changing :)

There was no traffic at all on that route traveling just after 09:00 we had a breakfast stop at Jabbeke Services and basically had a free run to Dusseldorf.

We left Dusseldorf in the rush hour and our biggest issue was traffic and road works on the A1 in fact south of Cologne our sat nav routed us off the A1 and onto the A61 and A48 to our destination in Auderath.

If you are going Liege, Aachen then Cologne I'd try and stay clear of using the A1 to your destination if at all possible.

Good advice, much appreciated.

My "normal" route to Aachen from Dunkirk is :- A 16 - N225 - A25 - Lille ring road - A27 - E42 - E40 - A44 - then A4 - A61.

We're staying near Boppard & then moving north of Koblenz to Bad Breisig so the return trip will be similar, unless we divert to visit brother-in-law, near Nijmegen.

Your route might be quicker but it does involve using the Brussels ring road...........

Some of the local wandering will be by train, both hotels are near stations on the left-bank of the Rhine railway & the Lander-tickets for 2

or more people are good value.

Don't know which car to take, old Superb or new R, depends on how much boot space Valerie requires.............

If we do get to Dusseldorf it might well be by train, (parking on  / near the Rhein Promenade isn't easy) but my phone does have a good public transport app,

so finding the classic remise won't be difficult.

Cheers, DC.

PS, Tom was thinking of going to the Lodge this Thursday, are you likely to be there?

I've bitten the bullet and ordered the RaceChip "Ultimate" and "Response Control"

The verdict on them?

Thanks J.

Hi DC

Detailed reply sent in PM.

I don't think that I'll make The Lodge this week though.

John

The verdict on them?

I haven't fitted the RaceChip Ultimate yet.

The RaceChip Response Control took a mere 5 minutes to fit.

It has 6 settings divided into 2 Eco, 2 Sport, and 2 Sport+. The lower Sport+ suits my driving style best.

Just imagine the throttle with zero lag = instant response; across the entire rev range.

My biggest bugbear with the default throttle response (even with the "Audi" setting) occurs when braking for junctions. When I could see it was clear before stopping, applying acceleration resulted in a lag before the engine responded.

Not any more.

I could ramble on about the Response Control, but the simple verdict is "what a fantastic bit of kit".

OK, this is getting seriously tempting and I eagerly await your feedback on the RaceChip Ultimate – thanks for info so far.

I suppose it’s a matter of kissing good-bye to the manufacturer’s (engine) warranty, but what the hey?*

I also note they haven’t adjusted their UK pricing for the weaker pound yet, so at the moment it costs less than it does in Germany – probably not for long.

Why 'put up with' 280ps when you can so easily have 350?

*PS: Did some more reading on the RaceChip website and it seems there might not be a problem in this respect.

Used VCDS to disable the automatic exhaust flaps so that they are open continuously.

Exhaust sounds a little better now (not completely silent but still quiet enough not to intrude).

What kind of money will this add to the insurance ?

I'll let you know in due course!

I listed my oem alloy wheels for sale in the sales section if anyone is looking for either a full winter set or, if I split, a full size spare.

VW 504 00 oil for the 280PS.....any good deals out there?

VW 504 00 oil for the 280PS.....any good deals out there?

I've used Opie Oils twice, good prices & quick delivery. ISTR tat there might be a Briskoda discount too.

HTH DC

I buy the oil for my racing vehicles on Amazon – usually very good prices.

But is your 280 consuming so much that this matters? I’d have very different concerns in that case.

It's not using any oil. It's not been built.

That would then make your question appear to be even more odd.

Be that as it may, you now have 2 suggestions for your future oil supply.

Why should my question be odd? I like to have oil for future top-ups.

What you on about ? What's odd ? Seems odd to me that you think it's odd !

Mine did use half a litre in the first 1500 miles, now done 7000 miles and not used another drop.

Got mine from Opie Oils, cheapest and quick delivery.

Got mine from Eurocarparts when they had the 30% weekend and free delivery, was a few pounds cheaper than Opie Oils.

Car does not use a drop of oil, I just did an extra interim oil change, just because. It's an expensive car, why be cheap on oil changes.
