The 280PS Thread

We're all bio-mechanically different, I suppose. As I said I'm 6'5" tall and as such my shoulders are well proud of the top of the seats. I tend to find that I have to choose between supporting the bottom of my spine or relaxing my shoulders (though fiddling with the lumbar support has eased this significantly). I still managed to cover six hours driving without any real incident, so they're definitely up there among the best seats I've had to date. If I was half a foot shorter and/or didn't have the arthritis I suspect I'd be making very different comments, but there we are. To be fair I find the steering wheel much more annoying (for my size/shape). It doesn't come out near far enough (which adds to the whole 'leaning forward from the shoulders issue), but again it's easy to adapt around thanks to the electric driver's seat. It's just one of the downsides of being so tall and having near 3' long legs. :D

Fair and valid point that I overlooked. I'm 6'0" with a waist that's quickly trying to match my chest! Even then that was too tall for the most uncomfortable car I've ever driven - a Subaru Impreza.

Enthusiastic OAP anything aren't common out their .....

He delights in cruising on single carriage-way main roads at 40-45 mph at the front of an ever-lengthening queue!

They must lead a blissful life – never in any traffic jams; always a clear road ahead.

PS: I’m another ‘enthusiastic’ OAP who even still races – on tracks, I hasten to add. And I’m far from alone; it’s quite encouraging, really.

Reviewers of the 280 just do not seem to understand that there are a lot of people who want a fast car and are not bothered about fuel consumption but do not want black trim, ultra low profile tyres and all the other embarrasing stuff tacked on making the car look like an overdressed Christmas Tree!

The 280 is possible the most perfect car for my tastes that I have ever owned.

And if you do want a Christmas tree you can order a Dragon Green Sportline 280 which is what i did this week.

I like the idea if a subtle car but in the end I went for stand out. Hope I didn't chose wrong.

Guys, it's very heartening that since starting this thread there's now over 1,000 replies. I haven't posted as much as some but I have to say after 8 months ownership I still love my Rosso 280 Estate since the first drive. Now, I've not owned many cars - actually it's only my 3rd and at 40+ years of age that's some going. Still, I think I was in the market for this just at the right time. I wanted discreet performance and space. Do I get that? Hell yes, in bucket loads! Most journalists (apart from not knowing their ass from their elbow) are far from the best people to review a car aimed at a niche market. They don't get it. Us owners, we get it, dare I say it again - in BUCKET LOADS!

I bought into the Skoda marginal sales bracket and I don't think I'll ever look back. Not with that grin when I put down 3/4 pedal and I think "ohhh yeah" then I give it 100% and think "ha ha I asked for more and you just give it right back." Although I named my car Lady Scarlett it's a man underneath because not many women can do that ;)

Cheers to all you 280 owners and the many more I'm sure will follow. :)

Also to add, I appreciate others tastes and think L&K 280's look awesome too.

Hell no, I admit I love the dragon green. I'm all for a Q car but gaudy green with gloss black alloys and a couple of coats of decent carnauba wax? God yes. :D

Hello mate ! I was just wondering how you were going on !! Us old timers ;-) As the founder of the thread and one of the early adopters try to get more involved !! :-)

If anyone is interested in a free map from a major tuning company in exchange of them using your car for a week for testing the map before they release it please PM me.

You would be given a car to use for a week and a free stage 1 map plus more goodies for your trouble.

After ordering back on April 18th the big day finally arrived today, 8th September.  3 hours later and there are already 100 miles on the clock!

Have to say after just a short drive i am really pleased with the 280 estate.

It is an SE L Exec in Corrida red with sunroof, towbar and modus alloys.

Wasn't expecting a full set of mats inside as i thought it was L&K that just had the mats. So its either a spec change or a freebie from Simpsons of Preston.

I noted that people in this thread have mentioned the engine noise in the past. Well after a short spin a few hours ago i can confirm there is almost none in normal driving and no sign of exhaust flap sounds. Even when you floor the throttle there is a slight growl but nothing to write home about. Very, maybe too, civilised.

I've attached a picture though don't know if it will upload......

SNAP !! Apart from the Mrs wouldn't let me have the Sunroof :-( ....

Mrs Philpix made the C4 Dispatches film highlighting the hidden evils of diesel 6 months before VW Dieselgate.

Long live the 280 pedal to the metal you petrolheads.

Alex, your post had me literally laughing. In fact I almost woke up the babies... Bad Alex, bad. :D I don't know what you're drinking tonight, but I want some!

There seem to be a few threads now of people complaining of their Superbs after so many miles/months so I thought I'd jump on the bandwagon as my car's just reached exactly 10k miles, just a few weeks short of its 1st birthday.

So to be negative I'll start with...

Things I don't like...

  • No rattles or squeaks - blooming annoying if you have to spend your time driving in a silent cabin like a bleeding trappist monk in his cell with nothing to listen to but the radio or the inane chatter of passengers whom you wish were trappist monks. It's so much better to take your mind off driving and play "Guess where that noise is coming from".
  • It goes (much) quicker than when it was new - I don't like driving fast, that's why I got a Superb because it's a boring old fart's family car and I only got the 280 because they said it was a "sleeper". I noze coz me's edjakated and reeds revuws (or ravver I gets mum to reed em to me, but I does likes the pritty photoes).
  • It uses less fuel than when it was new - I thought it was supposed to pass everything on the road except a petrol station? Pah, they got that wrong (unless you're not-so-Old Nick_H! ).
  • It still looks new - a few scratches and dents add character, or at least that's what people with scratched and dented cars tell me. Whenever I try to add a scratch or dent the stupid car just slams the brakes on!
  • I can now find what I'm looking for in the menus without searching through every other option first - where's the fun in that?
  • Comfort? - so please tell me, what's the point of driving hundreds of miles without actually getting out at the end of the journey, walking like Quasimodo, going ooh-aah-ouch and being greeted with a cheery "You must have come a long way". At least you could feel a sense of achievement. Instead you leap out with a "Hi, I've just driven over 600 miles to get here" only to be greeted with a grumpy "Really? Yeah, right".

Things I do like...

  • The door chrome popping out. Shame I had a brain-fade and got it fixed. It was so handy for smacking those annoying cyclists. Okay, just because it was on the driver's side didn't mean I couldn't swerve across the road now and again (ah, good times, short lived).
  • Every single warning light coming on and no throttle response. There was me foolishly thinking Fatigue Detection just showed a boring cup of coffee if it thought you needed a break. Creating instant panic is a much more fun way to keep you alert.
  • Or the car telling you all four tyres are flat. Now that's a really cool "Simply Clever" way to get you to stop damn quick and take a break.
  • Then there's coming out to the car and finding the boot wide open, saving me the effort of having to do it myself. How does it know?

So, anyone thinking of getting a Superb, let alone a 280, think again. I'll definitely never buy one again.

Well, if you decide to dump this 'orrible car, let me know, I could learn to like it..........

DC

I think a certain fellow who hails from the gin and jag belt has been breathing in those momentum 99 fumes again  :D

That's the trouble with petrolheads; it gets to their brains!

Made me smile broadly though even if I am now an oil burner simply polluting the world (allegedly).

Children murderer!!!! Derv is the work of the Devil

Just watched this video on YouTube.

Its says 4x4 on the back of the car, and has the dual exhausts, so this is clearing a 280 petrol. Can it really do what this video shows? If it can I am blown away, my current Mk II front wheel drive gets stuck in a muddy field and is rubbish in winter. I assume they are using winter tyres in this video, but still this is very impressive!

My current S2 4x4 with winter tyres is impressive on snow and ice. That's why my next Superb had to be 4x4.

Never had an issue with my S2 (170 mapped to 200) with winter tyres on, which is why I didn't spec 4x4 on my S3 (along with the higher running costs... servicing, fuel, tax etc) in hindsight this was a mistake as 505Nm through just the front tyres is a bit too much so pulling away has to be done gently.

You live in the sarf....do you ever see the kind of weather we get up here in the Pennines? 4x4 cuts it for me.
