Power Steering issues

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm one of the Fabias with a power steering issue. It had it when I bought it and I would like to fix it but I can't even find the pump where I am supposed to put in the fluid. I don't know if I'm blind or its hidden but I can't find it anywhere. It's a Fabia 2001 1.9 SDI model.

take the battery out then u will see the top of fluid bottle

Is there any way I can check if the pump is even working? I don't know what the fault could be

check fluid first if theres none in it then fill it up if it works you know u got a leak if it doesn't its the pump or steering angle sensor

Measure the voltage across your battery terminals (with engine running and an assistant in the car to move the steering wheel), expect to see the voltage dip a little each time the steering wheel is moved if the pump is operating (you'll also probably hear the pump 'whizz' if it's working).

You'd know if the pump wasn't working because you'd pull all the muscles in your shoulders trying to park the thing!

What "issues" do you have?

Most common causes are;

Poor earth connection on battery/body

Broken signal wires causing alternator not to kick enough power out

Old/tired battery

Angle sensor

Broken pump

First thing to check is that with the ignition on and the engine not running is there a red battery light displayed on the dash or not?

Phil

Also when checking the fluid level, car on level ground, wheels straight ahead & not have used power steering for 30mins beforehand. Remove cap, unscrew anti-clockwise (might be tight) and remove fully & wipe clean, then replace fully & unscrew again, the fluid should cover the bobble on the end of the stick.

Drove it back the 2200 miles from Liverpool to Pärnu, Estonia. The battery is charging and alternator is perfectly fine. Battery was changed in 2014, Angle sensor I'm not sure how to check.

Basically the steering angle tells the pump to work faster or slower as you move the steering faster or slower. If the steering angle is not working then the pump is working always at the same speed.

If the steering angle is is not working and the pump still works then the steering is more heavy if you move the steering quickly. And you almost don't notice nothing wrong if you move it slowly...

Your pump seems to be working because if you hadn't pump then the car is almost impossible to drive at low speeds, parking is a nightmare.... Trust me I know :(....

Another one who thinks the PAS is working because you would not believe how heavy unassisted steering is!

I've drove a Ford Mondeo V6 back from Poland without power steering (the power steering rod completely snapped and the fluid would just drip out) so I know how hard it should be. It WAS that hard however I have topped up the pump and it appears to be working better, although not perfect right now. Where is the steering angle located so I can see if that's broken?

Even with the new fluid in the PAS light remains on in the dashboard, yet, I get no ODB codes when using diagnostic machines.

Just like this! I had this same problem that started about a year ago. I looked at the earth contacts first and then all the fuses, etc ...

Fault codes referred G250 sensor changed it and no results ..

At some point, the pump ran out of all the action and guidance was REALLY heavy.
But the time of the time so that the pump is enhanced even about 60%.

The problem itself, in my case, it was inside the pump.

In fact, I bought a used part and at least the past 6 months it has worked well.

I thought that the first pump part number must be the same as the old, but it was not so.

For me, enough that the manufacturer was the same as the old. In my case, Koyon produced by the pump.

I had the same situation, pump failed twice and both times VAG COM showed a sensor error, but apparently it was the pump.

I suspect many things humidity, hight amps at car starting, and lately I suspect that as my steering was shaking a lot when breaking, maybe this caused an overload in the steering sensor causing for some component in the pump responsible to comunicate with it to break... (the shaking started like 2 weeks before the first pump failed and I didn't gave any attention to it untill now, recently changed the break rotors but I didn't tested it yet to see if it's solved).
