rear calliper carrier bolts

Featured Replies

well started to strip everything down on the rear left calliper to do the ABS sensor, BUT i've had to give up, defeated by the two bolts that hold the calliper carrier on.. Is there any easy way of getting these ba**ards out   :envy: ?   Thanks guys...

I managed by using about a 12" breaker bar then using a long crow bar to prise down on the breaker bar somewhere around the rear subframe to generate lots of pressure. This got it started. Have patience and don't give up plus swear lots and keep hitting it with a large hammer always helps.

If you can get in there, a 12v impact driver might help.

I had a go at mine last week. Dear me they are f**#(*g tight!! I had a 600mm breaker bar but it was too long to fit under the wheelarch. I now have a 400mm on order to tackle this weekend i do think I'll get them with that. Well plus a fair bit of heat but I'll need to be careful with that as the ABS sensor is in there. I did get the top bolts loose but didn't have enough room for the bottom ones.

Thinking of doing my disks and pads soon. Do you think an airline and air wrench will loosten them?

I would say yes. Like i mentioned, i did get the top one undone. Tbh, i think it's more limited space that's the problem. If you can get leverage with a breaker bar they'll loosen.

Normally way easier to undo the slide bolts and take the caliper off the carrier on the back of most VAGs.

What is the bolt head?? Am I correct in thinking it is a torx ??

14mm spline socket. Iirc.

But you have to take the carrier off to remove the disc on the larger brakes.

Wot he said.

I used a long strap fastened to the end of my ratchet. I backed off about 10ft from the car and braced against the gatepost and pulled on the strap and got the bolts undone.

Fair play, they were very close on the Ibiza when I did them, swift tap with a soft mallet talked them into it though.

Yes, it was fine on my old mkI octavia. I think you can do it on the 1.6 petrol engined MkII and probably the 1.9 diesels.

Thanks for the replies, I simply cannot get these 2 bolts out, Doesn't matter what i try they won't budge. So the car will be off to local garage to have it done, Costing £170, cannot believe i've been defeated by 2 bolts!      :S

Not tried heating them, The only thing i've got is a hair dryer and i don't think that will persuade them out :D .   There is serious lack of space to move under there, Got a 2 foot breaker bar but cannot get that in there, A rough estimate of the cost of parts is £240 from dealer plus labour,  for me to buy them (online etc) is about £100 so just gonna let my local garage do it.

I've just got both bolts undone on the passenger side. I just used a 450mm breaker bar. Fits under the wheelarch easily handle towards the rear me pulling down lying on my back. They loosen with a crack so wear gloves!!

They are stretch bolts.  The torque is 90Nm +90 degrees which I reckon would be around 150-170Nm.

I often think that these type of bolts need to be shocked off rather than applying a constant pressure (eg: rattle gun or belt with a hammer)

Do they need to be replaced with new ones when you take the old ones out?

If they are stretch bolts they should be replaced. But having removed the same bolts several times on my old mk1 Octavia i didn't replace those and they were fine.

I remember my indy swearing rather a lot when he did mine on the Octy. I think they had to heat them in the end.
