MY12 Elegance work log - with part numbers and coding

Decided I should make a brief work log as it might help out others. The following may have the odd mistake so please double check before assuming these are correct. I will be updating this original post when new things have been done.

Before we get started, I'd like to thank Eddie-NL as his help and advice, he really knows his stuff.

The car is a manual '61 plate (MY12) Octavia Elegance 2.0TDi (140ps) with the following factory fitted extras:
- Amundsen (RNS310)
- Heated front seats
- Light assistant
- Maxidot (MFD)
- Multifunction steering wheel

To make things easier to read, I've hidden any extra parts fitted or coding changes as spoilers. I've also included original/current autoscans as they are always useful. Hopefully using spoilers hasn't messed up mobile users too much.

Things learnt:
OPS module 5J0919475A H11 0005 is not compatible with 0006 firmware. It will show as '10-Park/Steer Assist -- Status: Malfunction 0010' without any error codes stored in VCDS. It's due to a 'missing message' so I would not recommend flashing to 0006 on this unit and I've replaced mine for a new unit as it hasn't got a simple EEPROM to restore.

Tried the steering curve from an Audi TT RS3 (243) but when back to stock as it didn't add much for my driving style.

Be careful with replacement LED DRLs, the CECM is sensitive to inductive and capacitive loads so there is risk involved when using versions with DC-DC converters on-board.

Yes, pressing the left roller button on my steering wheel currently activates voice control on the Columbus. Originally it would just mute the system.

 

As for Siri, I don't know as I haven't got an iPhone.

Quick update, now swapped the MK70 abs pump for a MK60EC1.

 

This has sorted out the HBA issues and also given me XDS, HHC and ESP.

Added LED licence plate lights today, they are pretty damn bright...

I haven't used the included load resistors and once I disabled PWM (CECM, byte 17, bit 7) I've not had bulb warnings. They are also E marked which is a bonus!

It was a straight swap with no coding needed or errors to clear, you'll need a steering wheel, airbag and appropriate wiring loom.

 

I grabbed a full package with all the above from superskoda (for a Fabia III) and replaced the buttons for the correct ones for a FL Octavia.

 

The part number I used for the buttons is 5E0919719F which are from a FL superb, do not use the buttons from a MK3 Octavia (or Fabia III) as they won't work correctly with the FL Octavia.

Just in time for winter I've added a PTC heater.

 

I'd planned to add the 'dumb' version (1K0 963 235 F) as it would have been the correct one for the car. However, I decided that getting access to the ECU to power the two relays for the PTC was too much work.

 

Instead, I grabbed the older 'smart' version (1K0 963 235 E) as installation would be much simpler. Aside from the heater I used the following:

 

1K2 819 349 L (PTC cover) <- not recommended for the 'smart' versions as it doesn't fit correctly.

1K1 998 250 (PTC wiring)

1K0 972 704 C (connector)

2x N 907 647 01 (crimps for above connector)

N 105 255 06 (100a fuse)

N 101 181 05 (M5 nut)

WHT 000 906 (bolt)

 

The power cables are very expensive for what they are, you could probably make your own for less but I used them as they crimps have captive nuts and are the correct shape for the PTC.

 

Had to remove the glovebox, ashtray, passenger side cover for the centre console, a vent and finally the cover for the heater matrix which is slightly more tricky on a RHD car as the cover also has a flap motor fitted to it. At this point the PTC just slides into place and the new cover can be fitted. I wouldn't advise getting the part number above for the cover as it doesn't fit the earlier PTC so needed to be trimmed, instead I'd suggest you just trim the original part. The battery also came out to give access to the grommet for running the wires through the firewall.

 

Power comes from the main fuse box via the 100a fuse and I also used a ground point in the engine bay. Aside from that, there are two connections to the rear of the climatic panel for CANBUS. At this point you can test the install by adding 7D to the gateway installation list.

 

You might find the PTC has issues... In my case it was the standard issue where the solder cracks around five of the resistors and after reflowing no errors were shown.

 

Simply refit everything that you removed and you're good to go!

 

I would describe it as warm air rather than hot even when the PTC is kicking out the maximum 1KW. Once winter arrives properly I'll see how it compares.

Sure, for my car I needed:

- left folding mirror

- right folding mirror

- mirror control knob with folding function

 

You also need to check what door controllers are fitted as not all support folding mirrors. Mine fortunately did but if yours don't they'll also need replacing which can seriously bump up the cost. I also added a memory module to the passenger side so it supports 'reverse dip' properly too.

 

I sourced used parts to keep costs down and reused the plastics and mirrors from my originals. Mostly as a new mirror is about £250 per side from a dealer...

 

Fitting was very easy:

- remove the door card

- unplug the existing mirror (make a note of the cable route)

- remove the existing mirror (two bolts?)

- add new mirror

- plug it in

- code it using VCDS

- replace the door card

I use ODIS-e for flashing modules, VCP can also do it.

 

I don't think there is much advantage, most were done when I was trying to get MKE (fatigue detection) working. I had a permanent fault code "Function Restriction due to Driver Fatigue Recognition" which I believed was due to a SW mismatch. It turns out the MKE requires data from the ABS module (acceleration/yaw etc) but as the original MK70M module didn't have the right sensors to provide it. Once I swapped to a MK60EC1 ABS pump it started working, I also gained many extra functions like ESP/XDS/HHC/BDW/EDL...

 

The steering rack update is covered by TPI 2020089, afterwards you can flash new steering curves to adjust how it feels.

 

The CAN gateway update is covered by TPI 2038229/2032692. I'm sure there are more TPI's but I haven't got the numbers.

 

The HVAC, ECU and instrument cluster were done as I found newer SW versions.

 

The BCM was done to fix an issue I caused by overwriting the wrong section of it's EEPROM.

I don't think yours will support reverse dip, mostly as it's missing the pins needed to talk to the new mirror motor.
