Finding the ideal car

Featured Replies

What a struggle I am having finding the ideal car, they are in short supply so they must be good. I have been reading all the for sale ads for the last month and still no joy. Looking for one of the last Mk2 Octavia Vrs manual petrol models with low mileage. Trying to avoid white or black but considering any other colour. I thought it would be a while before the available vehicle came up for sale, but there is hardly anything on the market that is suitable. How long did some of you guys look before you found the car you eventually bought? Anybody here considering selling theirs? Here's hoping the Skoda sales website or Autotrader has something soon, very frustrating! My Mazda will have to keep me going a bit longer. I will one day join you guys in Skoda ownership.

The last petrol mk2s are just coming up to 3 years old so they should start feeding back through soon as their finance agreements end.

I do hope so, as it is frustrating when you want a change of vehicle and there are none available. Just seen a nice one advertised with really low mileage and everything I want in the extras. Flamin thing would have to be black though. Still looking! I keep saying to myself, "be patient and the right one will come along".

I was in a similar situation, wanted a TSI VRS with factory xenons but couldn't seem to find the right one for a good month or two. Sold my previous car, so ended up renting a Vauxhall Combo van (was cheap) for a few weeks until I found a VRS. Ended up compromising on the Xenons, as a Race Blue one without them came up at a local Skoda dealer that was too good to pass up.

Depends what extras you want, I'd accepted that most could be retrofitted. Only had the car a week and a half and already I've added Columbus nav and an OE Vag Bluetooth module.

The extras I would "like" are xenons and parking sensors. I am now more than prepared to give up on both if a good car comes on the market. I can retro fit parking sensors anyway. At least I have a good car in the Mazda to keep me going. Intend to sell the Mazda after I buy the VRS as I don't think I will get much for it if I buy a car from a dealer and try to part exchange. I am sure the VRS will be worth the wait.

seems to be a fair few petrol vrs ' for sale here in ireland. They seem to be going for reasonable money but thats because there isnt a huge demand for them here . Diesel  would be the popular choice.

From what ive been seeing and contrary to the norm , the irish vrs' seems to have a higher spec than the ones i see on the british sites (autotrader etc.).

for example ive only ever seen one vrs without the maxidot display and that was an english import.

All the extras that are talked about on here such as parking sensors , maxidot, dual climate controls ,Centre Armrest with intregrated "Jumbo box",Rear electric windows, auto Lights, auto-dimming rear view mirror, and autosensing wipers seem to be standard fare over here.

Usually its the other way around ,most cars we get have very basic spec.

You will never find the ideal perfect car you want for the right price that is local to you, I've always had to travel to get what I wanted, went with a mate yesterday to Manchester who was selling an interior and he said it took him 2 YEARS! to find what he wanted now that's dedication lol

I am more than prepared to travel. If a good one came up in a Skoda garage with warrenty, I might even put some trust in what they tell me about the car and buy on the phone. Then I could take the train and pick it up. Surely a car that is neither black or white will come on the market at some point.

To get a decent one, you will have to be patient,  i am sure a wait till after new September reg you would stand a half decent chance of finding one.

I hope that is the case, September is not too far away I suppose!

Story so far. I am still looking and getting close, but no cigar!! A perfect one came up on the Skoda website. I had already arranged to get a text as soon as a suitable one comes on the market. Got a text today saying there was one. Not even on Autotrader yet. Here is my chance me thinks. Phoned up the garage straight away. Salesman was positive and said he would get the details of the car and phone me back. He phoned me 15mins later and you have guessed it, it was sold the day before!!!! Grrrrrrrrrr. Why was it put on the Skoda site the day after then? It was a late 2012 Race Blue with 14k miles.

Some possible good news though, the manager says there is another 2012 VRS coming in this week. Wish me luck, it may be suitable. Patience I keep telling myself.

Patience is the key , i bought mine last week after a 6 month search and it came from this website

Yep - 3 month wait here to find ours.

Ive a 62 plate petrol vrs in rallye green been hunting seems years for one so instead bought a red one then out of the blue the rallye green one turned up for sale on my doorstep, fact its the 1st rallye green petrol hatch ive ever seen for sale, its not that well specced but i had to have it knowing a lot could be retro fitted

I remember a green one on autotrader 2-3months ago. I seem to remember it was a private sale. It did look great, I wonder if that was the one you bought? Never seen a green one come on the market since. I quite like that colour, but the other half, "the boss" will not entertain it. Glad you got what you wanted in the end. As I stated earlier, might get a call from the sales guy about another VRS they are getting in this week. Wish me luck.

Well at last I have found the car. Just bought a Race Blue late 2011 Octavia petrol VRS from a garage near Doncaster. 31K miles with full service history. I do admit it is a bit above book price, but they all seem to be as they are hard to find. Going to pick it up a week Saturday. Up by train and back with power and comfort. Soon I will be a proper member of this excellent site. Will let you know what I think once I drive it home, although I expect to be well pleased.

Well if it helps it took me 3months and 11 cars to find mine.

I had a spec in mind I wanted/needed

Some were AWFUL and I mean dog ruff

I wanted a race blue one however most where totally ****ed

Some were really low speced

Some where highly priced

It's a buyers market keep looking

Too late to keep looking, left a deposit. The main spec I would have liked were parking sensors, but I have decided to retrofit them. I think I will be more than happy with this car.

A brave man buying without seeing / driving!

I'm sure however if it isn't as described the deposit will be refundable.

Is it from a main dealer?

  • Author

Yes I know, never bought a car this way before. It's not a main dealer but I researched the garage which is a family business and has been going since 1958 and the customer reviews are excellent. The sales guy did say that if it was not as described I could get my deposit back. Mind you, when I bought my present car, a Mazda 3 2.0ltr Sport from Birmingham, I agreed over the phone a price with the garage and if I was not happy when I saw it, I could back out of the deal. Been very happy with the Mazda for the last 3 years, so that worked out okay. Getting a warranty with the VRS as well.

Agree regarding the pricing, I found the same when looking for mine. Found a black one with xenons 2 hours away, but couldn't agree a price with the dealer, despite it being well overpriced. Wasn't prepared to waste a 4 hour round trip to find this out.

Race Blue is definitely the best colour ;) hopefully this is the one! Good luck

Cheers ahenners. Is the one you have got now a Race Blue then? I also like that colour a lot, hopefully not too boy racer for a man of my years.

Yeah it's Race Blue. Had lots of positive comments from people regarding the colour. I don't think the VRS comes across as boy racer in any colour really, it's still a bit sensible/mature for that IMO. I'm 25 so not exactly hitting my twilight years!

Blimey, you are younger than my son and daughter. A mere slip of a lad!! Now going to pick the car up tomorrow and even at my age, can't wait. Boys and their toys eh, we never seem to fully grow up.

I'm 25 and also have a VRS. Wait for the comments about being a grandad car from your mates and colleagues lol. I enjoy the car plus it's well specced. As it was the showroom car when new
