Replacing fog lamp bulb

Featured Replies

One of my front fog lamp bulbs has blown.

Are they easy to get to to replace, and is there an LED or XENON replacement for it???

If I need standard bulbs, is it just an H7 swapper??

Thank you.

(MOT due at the end of the month, and the bulb needs to be replaced otherwise Ivor will fail.

The bulb is a H7 and fairly easy to replace.

There are LED and HID substitutes, but why would you want all that extra light in a lamp not designed for them when they are only used in times of poor visibility?

And front fog lights are not tested at the MOT as they are not legally required.

Re MOT Graham, that's odd to me as out here if you've got lights they have be working correctly or you could show up as one eyed under certain conditions would be the attitude of the tester I would think.

Section 1 does not include front fog lights, therefore they are not tested.

The philosophy out here seems to be ...if you have - they must be serviceable.

I'm going to change the bulb anyway just to be on the cautious side.

I was merely wondering how easy it is to get to the bulbs to change them, thank you all for making the effort to provide a response......much appreciated.

I've replaced both fog lights on my Yeti. It's the cornering function that seems to use them up, as I've only used fogs a handful of times in three years. Osram Ultra Life H7 bulbs are a good match for the OEM bulbs (same colour/intensity) - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003A68QN4

It's a bit fiddly as there's not much clearance - if you have small hands it helps - but it doesn't take long.

A week passed between the two fog light bulbs blowing.

Interesting - I have previously had a car fail an MOT because of an inoperable front foglamp. It was explained to me that if a car has lighting fitted it must work correctly.

Does that apply to your body as well? If so I'd fail on a number of counts. :giggle:

Fred

That's enough from you lot

IT does ))))

Does the bulb twist out? I have had a quick look as our Yeti has blown a front fog.  Took the rubber bung off, taken the plug off and there seems to be no button to push or a twist or anything I have come across in the past and I am wary of trying to force it.

Cheers for any help?

RE the MOT question, changes came in last year, any warning light is a fail.

No, it just pulls out.

3 springs holds the lamp in place.  Only problem is to correctly rotate the lamp to fit the holder.

Reference the 3 x spring clips, and sorry for my ignorance, how do I remove the bulb from the clips/ vice versa? Do I simply pull the bulb towards the engine/ move the clips out of the way?

Correct technique will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

P.S. If you haven't guessed yet, please keep explanation as simple as possible.

Cheers.

Yes, you pull, HARD.

They can be very stiff.

Thank you for the help, greatly appreciated.

I've removed, replaced and checked the lights are working - all good.

The only problem I have is the new bulb is seated correctly, but the clips aren't fully holding the bulb in place.

Any suggestions/ advice?

Are you sure the bulb is in the correct orientation?

If yes then the clips are broken/bent or the wrong bulb is fitted.

If the clips aren't holding it securely then the bulb is not properly fitted. The normal problem is that the "flat" area of the bulb hasn't been correctly orientated. If you look through the front of the lamp you can just see if it is correct.

Coincidentally I fitted 1 of these for a customer about half an hour ago. As 175GDY says, the correct bulb orientation is crucial. You can see in his pic that there is a rebate at about 2oclock: the tab on the bulb needs to be located in this then with a wee bit of pressure the bulb will click into place.

As in the picture on the left in post 14 of this thread

If the bulb isn't correctly seated, the fog light may dazzle other drivers.

Sorry I've not been on forum since my last post.

I'll double check that the bulb is seated correctly tomorrow.

Thanks again.

We'll recall the search party)))

I used a plastic tube the same diameter as the flange of the bulb, about 1 inch long. I pushed this over the back of the Bulb pushing the locating springs back and releasing the bulb. A piece of 35m plastic tube worked perfectly, you can cut a slot along its length to make it more adjustable.
