New Spaceback owner... EU5 engine?

Featured Replies

Hi there, new member as I just got a new 65 plate SE Tech Spaceback which was sold with the 105PS 1.6 TDI engine in it, rather than the 115PS engine in the brochure, as it was an "in stock" car at a decent discount.

When I was searching around about why we don't seem to have the Stop/Start system on the car that is meant to be in all the models according to the brochure we have, it turns out that this older engine doesn't have it. OK - might not be a particularly big issue on its own, however I was told it was actually a slightly higher spec model than the current models being built - have I been misled badly here?

However, more interestingly, I've just been reading about why these engines have been replaced - all to do with a change to EU6 emission regulations. Which seem to have come into effect this month - i.e. no car with an EU5 engine is meant to be registered now. Does this mean I've been sold a car "illegally"? It's a 65 plate, so definitely registered this month - not a pre-registered car.

I dont believe a Euro5 car can be registered after from 1st Sep so I dont know how that happened.

I guess the dealers submitted tbe papers to dvla well in advance of 1st Sep and technically had the reg assigned to the car before the law changed.

Stop start was only fitted to greentech / greenline models AFAIK.

However, mine was fitted with it but I unknowingly disabled it by leaving the front screen demist on permanently.

Good idea mate. Stop/Start is a pain in the ass.

As said they registered that before the deadline :(

My main worry is we weren't told about the start/stop not being on our car, when we led to believe it was on all models via the brochure. You then wonder what else is missing? Seems a bit underhand of the dealer to claim it was "a slightly better spec" than the current model, when it doesn't appear to be.

I managed to find a January 2015 Spaceback brochure, and the only other thing I can see that's appeared between that and the version we were given is "Voice control". Will have to see if that's present - there's a button on the wheel for it, I'm sure... (wife is at work with it at the moment)

I also noticed the pictures had wing mirror indicators on the car now - really can't remember if we have those or not.

I sense a conversation with the dealership coming up...

Will also see what date the car was first registered when the ownership documents turn up. If we'd known they would have had to pre-register it if we didn't buy it, we'd have pushed for a better deal. Damn.

It does seem a bit naughty of them to do this. You've got a earlier made stock car rather than a new factory made order which would have all these extra things. It looks like you've been mislead a bit. Have a talk with the dealer and see what BS they give you.

I thought the SE Tech had all the toys. TBH, it's the model I would have chosen from the Spaceback range.

The 105 TDi was available with start-stop in both Toledo and Rapid, but whereas SEAT included it on most models, Skoda offered it as an option on most.

Anhunedd what they gave you is a MY2015 model (like mine) which stopped production in mid-May. The 2016 facelift adds EURO 6 engines with Start-Stop as a standard and also (quoting RapidRonnie):

- Indicators in wing mirrors
- New wheels
- New dashpod/maxidot
- LED function in foglights (DRLs?)
- KESSY GO/FULL
- Skoda 3d surround sound
- Climatronic with humidity sensor.
- Auto up/down electric windows
- Front parking sensors
- Fatigue sensor
- Front assist
- Uprated ESC

If you were not thoroughly informed of what the differences are, and did not get a discount I would say it was pretty sneaky indeed.

se tech has satnav instead of normal radio thats possibly y its got higher spec. they dont do se tech anymore  look under the bonnet at the wire loom its got a date of manufacture

Having a euro 5 car registered after 1/9/15 may cause you problems further down the line as after this date I thought all registered cars had to be euro 6. That was my understanding anyway..

Yes, that was my understanding too. Cars registered from 1/9/15 will be tested at MOT against the stricter EU6 emission limits so an EU5 engine I would have thought is unlikely to pass (see link : http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/consumer-news/90816/euro-6-emissions-standards-what-do-they-mean-for-you ).

I thought the law says you can't register a diesel car with Euro 5 emission after 1/9/2015...

Hi all, I am in the process of trading in my Octavian scout, I have ordered a rapid space back 1.6 tdi 115ps SE/sport manual gearbox I am now retired and thought I would get a smaller more econonomical skoda, and am now rather concerned after reading this thread. I had no idea about this September ruling. The car apparantly is ready for delivery next w/e I ordered it Monday this week. I got it at a fair price and 0% finance I am pleased with the deal however not if its not compliant with the new 2016 rulings. I guess I will have to contact the dealer? How else can I tell if it's an older model. I have ordered it in metallic white with xenon. My brochure is July 2015 it states the emissions are109 page 31 but I believe that might well be co2. Any suggestions greatly relieved.

Kind regards Mike

I will contact first DVLA to confirm rules for diesel engines after 1-st September...

If DVLA confirm that just car with EURO 6 can be registred... I'll go to dealer...

The engine you have ordered (115bhp) is the newer Euro 6 one.  The Euro 5 motor is the 105 TDi (or 105TSI).

In the specs section of the brochure it states whether engines are Euro 5 / Euro 6 in the engine spec tables.

btw.

Info by RAC:

From September, all new cars sold in the UK must meet Euro 6 emissions standards, designed to reduce air pollution in the EU.

I wouldn't be happy with that. The newer engine also is better on fuel and a lower tax bracket so it will cost you more in the long run.

Still don't understand how they're registered a Euro5 car after 01/09/2015.

Hi Camelspyder, and thankyou very much for your input, I feel a bit better now, was getting ready for a problem with the main dealer.

Kind regards mike

"From September, all new cars sold in the UK must meet Euro 6 emissions standard, designed to make more money" more like!!!!

So they gonna go crush all those EU5 cars that are prob sat on a dockside somewhere ready to be registered!?!?!?

Its bonkers this place it really is!

Oh yeah. Now that you say it like that... that can't be the case then!

I agree, the manufacturers had plenty of notice of the new requirement, in Skoda's case they changed over in May (week 22) to only producing EU6 vehicles to, I suspect, avoid having large numbers of EU5s vehicles left in their supply chain.  Also in the lead up to Sept there was heavy discounting of the EU5 stock. Any remaining unsold EU5 vehicles should have been pre-registered on 31 August latest to avoid this situation.  Although it appears someone has slipped up here though, if as the OP says, they have been supplied with new 65 plate Spaceback with the EU5 105PS 1.6 TDI engine rather than the new EA288 EU6 85 kW (116 PS) 1.6 TDI fitted as I think it must from 1 September in the UK.

If it were me I'd be escalating with skoda and getting them to explain how the mot will work when it's due

They should all have been pre-registered according to the wording as I read it,

Interesting, as my lad bought a new heavily discounted Seat Ibiza with the old Euro 5 1.4MPI motor late in July. However the same dealer is still advertising the same cars from their stock for 65 plate registration   :wonder:
