Hi from a Newbie

Featured Replies

Guys, I have been toying with a Skoda for a while and when my 'from new' Zafira bit the dust last week I started looking with a vengence.

I took a Superb for a test drive on Saturday and fell in love.

2011 with about 70,000 on the clock.Drove like I would expect a Mercedes to drive.

Any tips on what to look out for in terms of any issues I might find?

This saloon was in very good cosmetic shape and was extremely smooth yet powerful.

There was little wear on the pedals

Many thanks

Richard

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

It might help those who will be able to answer you what car are you looking for, petrol/diesel size of engine and trim level. Plus what mileage will you be doing and in town or motorway.

Good luck.

Thanks, good points.

- Superb 2010/2011

- Diesel 2.0DTI

- manual

- Trim - not worried as

  a. more things to go wrong

  b. the bright lights always distract me from looking at the car itself!

- 12-15,000 a year

- Twice a year I expect to tow a 1.5t trailer

- prefer estate but happy with a hatch

Welcome aboard :) Good luck with your search.....

Dave

Welcome to the friendliest and most helpful site on the web, Richard and Julia!

I'd go for a Elegance CR170 over the CR140 given your need to tow; the 170 engine just gives a bit more grunt.

Given, like us, you hold your cars for a long time, I'd go for the highest spec you can. The additional kit on the Elegance will cost you a couple of hundred quid more than an SE, and the same applies for an L&K over an Elegance. As for reliability, lower spec cars will be no more reliable than higher spec'd models, and will make driving more relaxed and comfortable, like heated seats, Multi-function Steering wheel, Bi-Xenon adaptive headlamps, Columbus SatNav, auto wipers, Tyre Pressure Monitor...

There are a good number of 2011/12 models on Autotrader right now, Estate and TwinDoor.

Good Luck!

Thanks, guys

I took a photo of the one I test drove - it was a basic model (CR 140 S?) according to the number plate.

When I turned the ignition on it showed the following:

Is that orange light supposed to stay on until the engine starts? It extinguished as soon as it started

Yes, perfectly normal

I have a CR140 that has just hit 80,000 miles, more than enough grunt.

Welcome

That a very personal opinion.... I thought my 170CR was lacking until it was remapped  :D

Getting a bottom end spec Superb and reading this forum will make you regret not getting a few more toys. At this point I wouldn't buy a car without cruise control unless it was for city use only. Things like the auto dipping mirrors, auto lights and wipers and parking sensors are small things that make a noticeable difference to how usable the car is - I'd miss them if I didn't have them. The elegance spec is the one to go for to get almost all the toys. The L&K doesn't add a lot extra. The only option unique to it I know of is the brown leather, which I don't particularly like the look of, though it probably depends on the colour of the car - I think L&K includes ventilated seats and the panoramic roof as standard though...

I've towed a 10ft trailer which was probably carrying about a tonne with my CR170 and the trailer wasn't particularly noticeable unless I was accelerating hard, so it's great as a tow vehicle. The CR170 is 0.1 seconds slower to 100 km/h than a 520d BMW as stock, and rear wheel drive cars are quicker off the line than front wheel drives, so in gear acceleration easily matches it, while the Superb has more space inside and a tighter turning circle.

Test drive the 140 and 170 and try both manual and DSG to get an idea of all the options.

For things we've appreciated.... over the Elegance spec, our 2014 L&K included LED exterior lights, both front seats electrically operated, heated windscreen, heated front AND back seats (front seats also ventilated), and park assist (which includes front parking sensors).

"Meh" things included 18" alloys (annoying) and TV tuner.

Panoramic sunroof was an option on our the twin-door (as was hill-hold).

I have the panoramic roof, electrically operated seats and park assist on my elegance. The only spec item I would have liked and didn't get are the ventilated seats. If you drive back roads the 17" alloys are as big as it's worth going. AFAIK 17" alloys are as big as they fit as standard across the whole Superb range in Ireland in acknowledgement of the standard of the roads. The soft suspension and hard anti-roll bars make it very good at making progress on back roads while still keeping things very comfortable, but can lead to wheel hop on speed bumps if both wheels hit the bump at the same time.
