Coil over broken spring - Help me identify!

Featured Replies

I hope someone can help me.

I have a 2004 Fabia VRS. It has lowered suspension.

This week, the auxiliary belt slipped off. I have also been having problems with braking. My garage found the tension spring and alternator clutch have both failed. The servo vacuum pipe is also leaking. Together, these are likely to cost around £300. Not too bad for a car with only 230,000 miles :-)

However, they also report that one of the front springs has broken and one rear shock is leaking badly. As the car has been lowered, I have no idea what parts are required so am asking if anyone can help. The car is still at the garage so I am unable to give much information.

One distinguishing feature is that the front suspension uses Ford Mondeo Mk1 drop links (firstline part no. FDL6354). as far as I remember, the front springs are yellow.

I contacted the original owner but they were changed by the second owner who I am unable to contact and am hoping that someone can help.

I also need to change the drive belt and water pump as well as the rear disks etc. shortly so if I need to spend too much on the suspension, it is not economically viable. A real shame as despite the age, the body work has no rust and still has the original exhaust. I have had the car for over 6 years and would like to keep it on the road as long as possible.

If anyone can help and steer me in the right direction, I would be able to get a bit more information/photos if required.

Thanks

Yellow springs would suggest fk coilovers, kw coilovers, and maybe a few other makes. Tbh to have lasted 6 years at least isn't bad going. You are unlikely to be able to find replacement parts for coilover sets, and if they are, whos to say that 2 months down the line the others won't give up? I would look for a second hand set of coilovers if you are looking to fix it cheaply, or look at buying a new set, maybe AP's (to keep other forum users happy ;) )

OK, after trawling through all my paperwork and a thorough search of my computer I found the original advert from when I bought the car.

The advert shows that Jamex coilovers were fitted in November 2008. Any advice on how to get parts for these or do I have to buy a new set. Can I replace these with any other make? Which is best and what are the likely labour costs?

With 230,000 on the clock, is it worth spending more money? the engine runs well although economy has dropped a bit over the past 3 years.

I know, too many questions :-)

Thanks in advance

Jamex is pretty cheap and nasty stuff, I'd bite the bullet and replace the whole lot with AP, it'll transform the handling.
