Cost of fitting extras to non new car -( I want the touchscreen radio!)

Featured Replies

Hi Yak

Thanks for the guide on removing the glove box - definitely worth considering if you want to go that extra step for an OEM-like wiring install.

I threaded the cable along the top of mine using a metal tape measure. I stuck a piece of blue tack on the end of the tape measure, to which I stuck the Fakra connector, and then simply extended it until it poked through into the radio cavity. Took all of a few seconds. However, it does mean the GPS cable is unsecured above the glove box, which is not 100% ideal. I've been OK so far, but depending on where it sits, others may find it creates noise such as a rattle. Securing it into the cable run as you have done will ensure this doesn't happen.

Cheers

Chris

  • Thanks for this. When I did my test install, I saw there were two aerial wires coming into the double Fakra connector, but was unsure if these were just two feeds off the one roof aerial to spoof the

  • Well, you can source a Amundsen sat nav unit for the rapid for £250 and up on eBay. Fitting is just an issue of time and patience as it's largely plug-and-play (the only fiddly bit will be installing

  • Yes, You will lose warranty just for that what you changed... In this matter... If you fitted aftermarket HU, you are losing warranty for a factory HU... nothing more...

Sorry to bump the thread, any one who has replaced their swing unit prepared to sell it on at a reasonable price?

Thanks!

Using VCDS I managed to find the optimum place for the GPS antenna placement. I went to Advanced Measuring of Module 37 and selected the channels shown below:

The best place proved to be to stick it onto the headunit! Unbelievably easy to install and best signal reception. The only thing I had to do was to round up the excess wire and stick it beneath the HU. Also, you have to stick the aerial somewhere above the stickers because otherwise there is no room to place the unit back on.

The signals above are of the four best sattelites visible. These signals were about the same when I put the antenna outside the car, whereas when I placed it under the A pillar as suggested the readings were all below 40.

Of course, I don't know what these numbers actually represent, if they are on a logarithmic scale or not, but the do show the strength of the GPS signal received. So the signal IS stronger if you put it over the HU as I did, but it may show no difference to you. I would suggest it though, as it is a more convenient place to hide it.

Ok, let me try and work through these:

If you have a Swing, factory fitted Bluetooth and no MFSW - you need to source an Amundsen or Amundsen+ WITHOUT built-in Bluetooth. I believe that there are also Columbus units without built-in Bluetooth, but not 100% certain on that.

Straight swap except for adding the GPS aerial and (if you have a DAB model) a dab aerial. Everything else just works.

One correction for the RNS-510 Columbus. If you have an old SW version (below 3800) you will have to upgrade to have MFSW and Maxidot to work. I recommend version 5238. Also, all RNS-510 Columbus units do NOT have bluetooth built-in but cooperate nicely with extenal BT modules.

Maybe I will. But I have not decided yet. PM me if you are interested.

How did you put the glovebox back in? I am having trouble getting the bottom to fit in, the top is in all of the way.

I'm back in my Rapid and looking to finally get a new HU. I've read a lot of posts over the last few days and scoured eBay and asked around for what is possible for my Rapid (2014 Sport with Swing).

My requirements are similar to @chrisgreen in that I'd like to retain the BT module controlled via stalk / Maxidot and also the AUX / USB connections under my Swing unit.

I'd like to get a RNS 510 with DAB but it sounds like there isn't a variant without BT, there is a non-BT variant but with no DAB.

As there's so many posts around I thought I would put together an easy-to-read table of the various options, let me know if there's something missing or wrong. I don't know much about RCD330/Bolero so it's mainly focused on the RNS 315 / 510.

EDIT: I did some research and ended up getting and installing an RNS 510 / Columbus - I've written up how I did it an my thoughts on the unit HERE.

The 510 has been put into Rapids in here before. We have a resident expert too, @Rustynuts

There's no Columbus (RNS510) with built in Bluetooth. They never made one.

Thanks @Rustynuts, this is different to what I am getting back from eBay sellers etc. I've updated my table.

So my final question would be around the USB / AUX ports under my Swing - they would continue to work with the RNS 510? If they do I will go with one of these instead of the RNS315.

Can you post a pic of your unit please?
