MY16 MKIII VRS TDI quick review after first 5 days

Not sure if the Blackline had a different suspension to my 07 TFSI however suspension-wise my petrol MkIII is a step improvement over it, wider and more comfortable seats including the headrests. Horses for courses I suppose. You may notice that it corners better also, even if it is the diesel lump, which I suppose is heavier.

Yes your right its better suspension than my 55 plate TFSI which is now very soft with age. But the blackline was nice and tight but compliant this just seems to feel the bumps a bit more but your right its better going round corners.

It seems as in many cases in life,it's the tiniest details that irritatate the most, bit like having a small pebble in your shoe.

The boot carpet does stands proud about 5mm, but it's only a visual thing, doesn't interfere with boot use at all.

Enjoy your vRS !

Thanks very much for this and its exactly what i thought. I will be ordering an 18" Gemini then.

16" wont fit the front, needs to be a 17" to clear the front discs, 16 will fit on the rear though

A full size 16" wheel will fit in the spare wheel well. A 17" wheel is too wide to fit properly. This is why they supply space saver spares even though the spare wheel well is enormous.

What are you on about? they are talking about fitting over the brakes. Its no good having a wheel in the boot that wont fit on the hub? Also none of this is relevant to my topic as i asked if an 18" VRS Standard Gemini would fit in the boot. Nothing else matters. Sorry if thats a bit blunt but this could waffle on for ever with people arguing over 16" or 17" and its completely pointless. Can the mods delete the non relevant posts please to tidy it up a bit.

I am about 6 weeks into ownership of my vrs, its interesting I see lots of people comment about the suspension being to firm, I guess it really does depend on what your used to. i have come from a 3 series with the m sport + package on it and that was really firm ride so in comparison the VRS feels like I am driving on a cloud. I would happily have the suspension be firmer if it meant the car sat a bit lower.

one thing I am puzzled about is the hill assist, do you have to do anything specific to make it work? I can't say I have ever noticed it working

Face up a hill, in neutral. Hold foot on the brake. Take foot off brake. Wait two seconds. Frantically hit the brake as you suddenly roll back*.

Simples.

*slightly less urgency on shallower slopes

Scribbler simples. Jack the car up remove one of the wheels and try it in the boot !

Whoa the fun of these threads is how quickly they can be changed, diverted E.g The favourite is usually something like a question referring to Mpg / Performance for a petrol which is then hijacked by Diesel owners or vice versa and as you correctly say, waffle on for ever...

I was simply replying to the post before mine (#6) clarifying what size wheels would fit in the spare wheel well. There's no need to overreact. And the thread is about someone's car review, not about wheel sizes.

On the stopping and starting topic, the start/stop on my MY16 VRS seems to cut in a lot sooner than on the MY14 version.

That might explain my MY16 cutting out on me a lot more than my 2014 car ever did at a very slight roll eg when gping overy a hugh speedramp which was on an upill slope..

Hi

I had the same problem with the airbag stickers on the passenger side! I ALWAYS drive with both visors in the down position - due an eye problem many years ago, so I see the stickers even more the most do. Another one of my OCD problems!! My friendly Skoda parts guy ordered a LHD divers visor for me! took a couple weeks to arrive! and was not cheep - but it is not sorted on my VRS.

Happy days

Steve

If it's anything like BMW visor stickers, you can get them off with acetone free nail varnish remover.......

I've had my Mk3 vRS for about 9 months now and it replaced my previous Blackline so it's quite easy to compare the two.

The suspension isn't particularly "harder" than the mk2, I find that it's the rear suspension that can get crashy around town - it's almost as though it hasn't been fine tuned for UK roads.

The seats seem to offer more support than the mk2 (although it may be that my BL had leather and this one is cloth) however, I find the base terribly uncomfortable but this is mainly due to the side bolsters digging into my thighs. It's my main gripe with the car.

The sound system isn't as good as the Amundsen+ in the BL - the sound just doesn't cut it. I've found the source of music has a big influence on this and it's got better as the speakers have bedded in, but it is still inferior.

Mine is in black and my BL was the blue version so this current one just doesn't stand out - it looks like an Audi (good or bad I'm not sure).

The headlights are amazing. The engine is noticeably keener than the 170bhp version, both are DSG and the programming on the mk3 is a country mile better than the sluggish dim-witted programming installed on the mk2 DSG box. It is more competent in day to day use, quite a bit more refined and when really pressing on puts a massive smile on my face.

Hi Chappers. Good comparison. It looks like Skoda cocked up with the MIB 1 Amundsen / Bolero, as the levels are ALL wrong. No good to you I know, but have to say the MY16 MIB 2 units are night and day. Much much better. Very bassy and well balanced. But so many complaints about the MIB1 you'd think there'd be a software update available possibly? I feel very fortunate as when test driving I didn't focus on the stereo, and had my car not been built when it was (after wk22), I'd have had the MIB1. Could live with it, but wouldn't have been satisfied with the performance. I drove an early 15 plate VRS with Amundsen for two weeks directly before getting my car, so the difference was immediately obvious.
