MY16 MKIII VRS TDI quick review after first 5 days

I have a full size wheel in the spare wheel well of mine. Its an Audi rim, 18x8J. It fits fine in terms of diameter, but it does lift the boot floor slightly, maybe 15-20mm. But I have one of the hard plastic boot liners so its not that noticeable. The only downside is that the polystyrene insert doesn't fit into the wheel, but I have removed the tools and put them in the storage space at the side of the boot.

Yeah thanks for this im quite happy not to have the tools inside the wheel but I need confirmation that the standard 18" VRS Alloy fits before I buy one. I don't mind if it raises the boot floor ever so slightly it did that in my backline but as long as it fits roughly. I'm sure someone must have tried one.

  • Took a while for the positivity to come in there. Ha ha!! I'm completely baffled by some of things I read on here. Not just this thread, but other ones too. I wonder what some people were driving be

It seems as in many cases in life,it's the tiniest details that irritatate the most, bit like having a small pebble in your shoe.

Swapped my space saver for a standard vRS 18" Gemini alloy & tyre and they fit fine. You have to cut some of the polystyrene of the tool kit holder, to make it fit inside the 18" wheel. The boot

Fair enough but I am convinced it'll fit. I just haven't put one in because I only have 4 of the standard alloys :)

Yeah on all my previous 4 vrs I have always had a 5th alloy in the boot that matches the other 4. Its very handy if one gets kerbed you can replace it before you sell it. Also if you have a blow out like we did in france on a sunday its usefull to have full size wheel rather than tyre foam.

On the stopping and starting topic, the start/stop on my MY16 VRS seems to cut in a lot sooner than on the MY14 version.

Nice write up mate.

Could we have some interior shots of your motor please?

I thought this might be the case which Is what I suspect is Neily03 reason for arguing but ultimately these are my experiences with my car so not sure why the need to try to correct me on the issue but never mind.

Thanks,

Its just standard pal with the red stitching. I'm sure someone has already posted some MY16 interior pics. P.S. mines covered in finger prints and marks already the wife and kids have it most of the time.

First thing I checked at handover. Might be just because my MkII is quite old now and this is new so a bit tight. The Blackline suspension was spot on not harsh but not too soft either. I don't mind hard suspension coming from hot hatches previous to the skoda's these are like boats in comparison but for a car of its size they handle surprisingly well.

I think the Tyres make a big difference. My MK2 Vrs is on 17" and this is on 18" so the lower profile makes a big difference and they are Bridgestone Potenza I think these may be a bit stiffer shoulder than the Avon's on the MK2.

Maybe check your tyre pressures then? As I said, I don't find mine to be crashy at all, but agreed that this could be down to newness and personal opinion.

I think you may be misinterpreting the nature of my post. Someone (can't remember who) asked me to do a quick review. I Am being overly picky though deliberately which may be skewing the overall view of the car. Don't get me wrong Im very satisfied with my purchase and im going to really enjoy it for a few years until I get the itch again.

Its pointless me singing the praises of all the good points of the car because many of these are existing in the previous VRS's. I have had each VRS since inception Silver Mk1 VRS 1.8t, Mk2 Pre FL 2.0 TFSI (Kept it because its amazing) MK2 FL CR TDI Blackline and now this MKIII. Im just pointing out issues however trivial that may be more important to some people than others so they are forewarned before signing on the dotted line. But make no mistake against its rivals its hands down a better car. Trouble is its closest rival is probably the MK2 Blackline that we traded in which was an excellent benchmark.

P.S The separate Headrest make it easier to see naughty kids in then back seats. At the minute they are mugging me off and I can't see them. Like I said important to some not to others. Plus I prefer my head to be protected in a collision I have had whiplash once and its no fun.

Scribbler, apologies and I get it. As I tried to infer at the top of the post, there are just numerous threads I've read where people have criticised the car for ridiculous things. The exit lights, someone said it was crazy that they only came on when you opened the door and not when the ignition was turned off. Why? The number of times the headlight washers wash, coz they have to refill the reservoir more often. What a hardship. There's no light on the dash to indicate when the lights are on. Deal Breaker! I mean, come on people!! What are you on about??? Ha ha!! So I think I was already there once I read the airbag sticker comment. Sorry. My bad. I've only owned this car 4 weeks and I'm already fiercely protective / defensive of it. Glad you put it into context and sorry for being so quick with my response. Wishing you many years of happy VRS'ing.

Agreed. That's why I have got the wheel I have. I accept it isn't 100% the same though. I have had one experience of that roadside inflation gunk and it was completely useless. Much rather change a wheel and carry on as normal than wait for hours for recovery!

Hi

I had the same problem with the airbag stickers on the passenger side! I ALWAYS drive with both visors in the down position - due an eye problem many years ago, so I see the stickers even more the most do. Another one of my OCD problems!! My friendly Skoda parts guy ordered a LHD divers visor for me! took a couple weeks to arrive! and was not cheep - but it is not sorted on my VRS.

Happy days

Don't suppose you have a price and link by anychance?

I know you haven't had it long but what MPG are you getting at the moment?

Nothing spectacular 50+ which is similar to the Blackline. The figures in the brochure suggested a big improvement but I have yet to see it. Not that it bothers me too much the price of diesel is lower than ever and we got £500 fuel card in with the deal so that should last us a while. in contrast I only get about  27mpg in my TFSI this weather so can't grumble.

That is pretty decent. 12 days till I get mine. Cannot wait.

16" wheel is no good as it wo t fit over the brakes. The bra has 340-345mm front discs. I don't even think a 17" fits over them... The space save can be brought but it is an 18" and I think about 170 quid

It will take a full size 16" wheel. I think the issue with larger wheels is the width rather than the diameter.

Vrs no bl00dy bra

Esseesse200

Got a bra on my vRS!! and I white one as well. But that's not what you were saying.

Sorry don't have the link or the price - as I am in France at mom. When I get home I will sort though my receipts for the part number and price

I have the space saver but I want an actually alloy that's identical to the other 4, someone must have tried one even if it was while they changed a puncture?

I Can't understand Skoda not giving you enough space to fit the one you take off when you put the saver on its crazy if your on holiday and have a full load.

Do they want you to leave the punctured alloy by the roadside?

17" will fit the front, smallest size wheel that will ( 225/45/17 tyre )

It will take a full size 16" wheel. I think the issue with larger wheels is the width rather than the diameter.

16" wont fit the front,  needs to be a 17" to clear the front discs, 16 will fit on the rear though

As Auric says, a 17" wheel will fit over the front brakes.

Swapped my space saver for a standard vRS 18" Gemini alloy & tyre and they fit fine. You have to cut some of the polystyrene of the tool kit holder, to make it fit inside the 18" wheel.

The boot carpet does stands proud about 5mm, but it's only a visual thing, doesn't interfere with boot use at all.

Enjoy your vRS !

Not sure if the Blackline had a different suspension to my 07 TFSI however suspension-wise my petrol MkIII is a step improvement over it, wider and more comfortable seats including the headrests. Horses for courses I suppose. You may notice that it corners better also, even if it is the diesel lump, which I suppose is heavier.
