Hi all.

I've read countless comments on these threads about the non functioning outlet for a VRS diesel. Some people are fairly ambivalent to it, some very strong in their opinion, to the point of a sneering look down on this "lesser" VRS with its "fake exhaust". I have one, and to be honest, it doesn't bother me much, but it's always at the back of my mind that from certain angles, the "cat is out of the bag" so to speak. So imagine my surprise, when speaking to a friend at the weekend who's just test driven a new S3 and a new Golf R, that both of these cars have non functioning tailpipes. In fact they have two. One at each side of their "quad" set up. Makes me feel a little less self conscious about my own now, knowing there are others amongst us of reasonable standing. As if to prove my point this morning, I was behind a 15 plate S3, with two blackened tailpipes where the gases were omitted and two shiny chrome ones where they took on a form over function quality. Just thought I'd share. Cheers.

Get a Milltek exhuast if it bothers you that much. I have one on order to be fitted to my car 2 weeks tomorrow. :)

It seems to be TDI owners who are most concerned. I am sure it won't make either petrol or diesel version tangibly quicker , it's simply a look and a good way to waste money and add weight for those who are bothered by it and modify their car. Give it 2-3 years and there will be another fad.

Hi Tim 1631, it doesn't bother me that much. It was more to do with some posters being, in my opinion, overly critical of Skoda's decision to have the current set up rather than a single side twin outlet set up. Auric, I'm onboard with that. Ha ha! Redboy, of course it is, we're driving them!! Drive it like you stole Billy!

Not everyone will agree or get my point, but it seems like Skoda aren't the only VAG group brand to incorporating dummy outlets. That's my main point. Cheers all.

One guy in our street drives a Golf R, the other an Audi TTS and on both cars I have noticed this (the Golf more apparent as the TTS is quite new). I am wondering though if the outer two (I think are the cleanest ones) are activated when they "open" the exhaust. I know that the RS4 had such a setup, I thought maybe the R and S have the same?

Other than that I only notice the fake exhaust on the VRS when I am just behind one of the many diesel ones that drive around here. I always approach my VRS from the front, as you should with any dangerous animal :)

Thats wrong , the S3 and the Golf R use all four, only when you are tootling around does it use the inner ones , when you gun it it uses them all , the Octy 3 does look a bit TDI , well that's what it is anyway with them pointing at the floor and NONE of the fake exits used ! :nerd::bandit:

Hi mate sorry to say but your wrong the S3 and Golf R have all four exhaust outlets working. Just depends what mode it goes in I.e. race mode the flaps open and put all four into action :)

Even running in full race mode the inners still seem to get mucky leaving the outers cleaner but they are all working.

Which makes the fake Skoda pipe seem even more pointless.

Hi guys. I'm only going off what the Dealership told my friend. He was looking to buy one. Had no reason to doubt him as he's very into his motors. I'll get it confirmed as I know someone who's worked for VW for years.

Classic, comments like yours inspired this post. So cheers. Ha ha!!

No need to get it confirmed, as said I drive my Golf R everyday and know how the exhaust works, its the same as an S3 and has electronically controlled flaps to operate ALL the outlets.

It's not an issue that needs confirmation from your friend or anyone, its a known fact, they all work :)

They aren't going to make two different rear bumpers for the diesel vs petrol VRS so who cares....I put my keys in the fake exhaust when I go mountain biking, really handy even if its raining.

Used to put beers up inside the back bumper on the Scout when we went skiing too, keeps em cold.

All down to economics.....being based on the Mk7 Golf the TDI and TSI's have different exhaust systems....is why a Golf GTD has the twin left outlet and the GTI the split pipes.

Skoda decided to use bumper based trims for whatever reason (cost no doubt as they coule make cheaper exhaust systems for each) had to have the split pipe arrangement to accomodate the TSI exhaust (which i expect is identical to that fitted on the 1.8 TSI Octavia but with straight rather than downswept exits) so the TDi had to make do.

Who cares really, both excellent cars for the purposes they fulfil.....I certainly wouldnt go to lengths to try and make it look like a TSI as it'll be a dead giveaway when you turn the key anyway.

The 1.8 TSI (2WD) has a twin left outlet, while the 1.8 TSI (4WD) has split pipes.

I'm looking at trading in my vRS 184 manual (tuning boxed to 230) to a Golf R DSG exactly as you have.

I'm fed up with leaving roundabouts and not getting any traction in anything but dry, hot Tarmac.

How do you find it, is it as good as I hope in terms of speed, traction, drive ability? I will probably have the tuning box again from DTUK which takes it to around 370, unless I feel it's quick enough :-)

Is the DSG the 6 spd wet clutch version?

Havent booked a test drive yet as I'm just waiting on something but I do want to change, I had the mk2 vRS DSG before this one and I really miss DSG.
