7 Degrees this morning: Got your WINTERS on yet?

Seen in the Auto Express 2015 test the new Nokian Weatherproof outperformed the dedicated winter tyre on Snow and Deep Water.

Both Michelin and Nokian are claiming their new tyres are not All Seasons which typically have some of the tyre with winter tread and some with summer tread.

Michelin say the Cross Climates are a Summer Tyre that performs well in winter and has achieved 3PMSF accreditation and seams to perform as well as an all season on snow.

Nokian say the Weatherproof are a Winter tyre that performs as a winter tyre on snow and ice but remains stable even in high temperatures on dry roads and can be used all year.

Two new tyres that are very interesting. I'm going to try a set on the Octavia, not sure which yet.

  • In that case you (and I) are going to die in an exploding ball of fire in the bottom of a snow filled ravine, having slid off an ungritted ice-covered road due to us not having spent £800 on a spare s

  • Im sorry, but that is the sillyest thing Ive read so far today. Ok granted, Im used to a totally different winter than you, but no matter how good a driver you are, summertyres is outright dangerous

  • In a lot of the UK we can have an entire year with no snow and ice, and for the few days that it might happen I can just leave the car on the drive. If I lived in a more rural area with worse weather

I can't fault the Weatherproofs so far. Better in the wet than either summer Dunlop SP01s or winter Nokian WR A3s. Quiet & predictable at the limits of grip. They haven't seen the full temperature range yet; the tail end on summer temps around 20C in September, and now 0C in the last few days. I'm expecting them to be at least the equal of the A3s in the white stuff, should it eventually turn up.

PRETTY THICK SNOW UP HERE AND STILL SNOWING     Nice travel to work at 6.45 over the moors  :p

Still no sliding

Nor wheel spin (at least not at low speed...)

15mph hard stop (not emergency) and ABS (or EBD or whatever gizmo kicks in) - u can hear some gritty lock and a flash of dash light and it s STILL brought to a stop under full control again :)

Pleased with me CrossClimates

You're not trying hard enough if you cant make it slide ;).

That lever between the seats should sort it ;)

Was dark this morning and dark return from work, and it took me ten minutes to get the snow off as it had frozen on, nothing but me and a proper landie in the other direction, my car with winters and 4wd is awesome

Turn esp off gun it and haldex transfers power to rear, so safe because once it starts sliding it goes back to the front imperceptibly  :nerd:

Great fun! I bet that V6 really sounds good whilst you're doing it too? :D

Tbf with decent tyres the only problem on a normal hatch (with narrow tyres) is the ground clearance. I never got stuck in our 05 polo until it completely bellied out :D. Then its buggered and only landrovers were going past lol

After yesterdays drive. And that was after removing enough snow to open the lid.

The Octy really collects snow while driving.
