What about the cost to the economy when all those 'I'm a great driver, I got skillzzz' types end up stuck at the side of the road and getting dragged out by the AA/ RAC/ Green Flag/ Police/ Dave in his 2CV with skinny tyres (you know, cos they're so awesome)

I have never bothered, and never intend on fitting winter tyres. 

 

All i try to do is drive to the road conditions... solid sheets of snow & ice on the road? well drive more cautiously and appropriately (not saying those who have winters dont, they just dont have to actively drive as cautiously).

 

Yes I accept this does not help me in an emergency stop situation or where I am in a condition where the winter tyres would provide better traction (I am not stating they dont).

 

However typically, living in Kent, the temperatures rarely dive down low enough and for prolonged durations where Winter tyres would be needed and even so when they do, its usually when I am not driving my car. If its snowing, due to the proximity of my home to Shops/Work I walk, I should anyway all year around, but I walk in snow etc, because of the other nutters on the road

 

 

I have experienced in my time of driving, lack of grip due to tyre temperatures, however all I do is adjust my driving style appropriately end of. If we had more severe cold weather for long durations, I may consider fitting winters. but until then, ill stay on my usual tyres.

People will have totally different views depending on where abouts in the UK they live, what time of day they drive, how many miles they drive and whether they have a job where they must get in even in the worst weather.

 

An IT job in the south working 9-5 a few miles from home will have a totally different view than an Engineer in the power industry in the Peak District working 30 miles from home getting up to drive at 5am.

 

But then there are still those who will drive across the snake pass in their BMW/Merc etc sports cars/Saloons in the snow on summer tyres and expect the Recovery Services to come to their aid when they get stuck or slide off the road causing everyone else to be delayed for hours. *******!

Its just a general side effect of driving a BMW .

Damn right mate, and well put.

Im a self employed plumbing and heating engineer (pretty much just heating in the snow season) in the centre of the Peak District.

If i dont get to work, i dont get paid. So theres winters on the T5 and theres only one day i couldnt get to work last year. Okay the van would just about move with its extra ground clearance (it runs wide tyres, its still FWD, and its always full) but it wouldnt of got me to my job out of town, or atleast it wasnt worth risking. Just to elaborate on that.. A friends got a farm and a 4x4 Massey Ferguson got stuck in a drift on a back road to his farm a few years back. It gets bad.

The rest of the time though theyre great. Id have to have had loads of time off here and there if i was running summers.

Put against loss of earnings, winters are a bloody bargain.

Now being self employed in mid Wales (being mobile) I've sank £170 into a set of winters and wheels for Clio this year, will be fitted next week. Been regularly seeing 0 degrees in the mornings as I leave for work

Funnily enough I've just been followed home by a BMW using the 3 inch rule. No indicators either. Mind you that's standard out here whatever car

I joke about it, but when i eventually have a new car.. Itll probably be a BMW tbh. But the fabia will be run for as long as possible.

No they dont go in the snow, but feck it, im not arsed. Nore does the bike but i still love it lol.

Just taken my winters out of their tyre tree & fitted them to the Golf...............

 

3.5C this morning, 1.5C two days ago...............not seen any gritters about, but that's because the local council (Muppet factory) has a £46million black hole & has decide to reduce it's fleet of gritters & staff........so no early morning gritting then...........

 

 

As for certain BMW drivers feeling "awesome" ..............don't they own a Suzuki Vitara for snow & don't use the BMW!...............

 

It's an option I have not found in the BMW catalogue...............

Why are you wanting gritters out at that temp? Drives me mental seeing them out when the weather doesn't justify it, then in february when it's needed they're nowhere cos they've blown their budget. Sounds like your council have the right idea.
