MK2 and Mk3 Octavia wheels and winter wheels

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Well after 10 years of service and nearly 130,000 miles of service with me, I've decided to trade in the MK2 Octy Elegance PD140 against a very good deal on a MK3 Elegance Estate TDI CR 150.

Dealer is giving me very little for the car, but then the deal on the new car more than makes up for it.

The new car comes with globus?? 18" alloys and I wouldn't even consider running with these in the winter. Due to this I was wondering mainly if the wheel size of the MK2 (5*112) are the same on te MK3 and so the wheels will fit.

If so does anyone know if the 16" vega alloys will fit the MK3.

Also does anyone know the official size for the 16" steel wheels for winter tyres on the MK3 estate, is it 6J (As per my steels) or 6.5J (As per the vega) when used with snow chains.

Thanks in advance

Don't suppose you know the ratings for the tyres do you? I'm thinking 91H should be fine for winters, but you never know.

Octy III standard alloy wheels (no chains) are: 6,5J x 16 ET46, 7,0J x 17 ET49.

With snow chains: 6,0J x 16 ET48-50 with 205/55 R16 tyres and 6,0J x 17 ET45-48 with 205/50 R17 tyres.

Right, well that answers the 6J steels are staying.

I've gone for H rating, but according to some on here that is incorrect. I also ran my MK2FL with no issues on H rated tyres.

I'm sure someone on here argued that they should be V rated.........price difference is about £80 a set depending on size that is.

Great,

To be honest I ran V rated Nokian WR A3 94 XL on the MK2, because that was what I can get cheaply.

I've now just ordered 205/55/R16 Nokian WR D4 91 H to go on the 6.0J steels. Frankly H rated is 130 MPH and I've only ever gone over that on the autobahn.

There is the winter tyre speed warning I can set to 120MPH (And never hear) and frankly if I was anywhere near the 130MPH in winter conditions in the UK, I'd be quite worried.

I'm under the same view as you. In winter conditions I will never do over the 130mph.....even less so in the UK.

I think it's to do with the type approval of tyre set by Skoda, IMHO I don't think it's a major issue as long as your insurance is informed.

Hi,

If you find you have any issues with insurance at all then please feel free to drop me a line.

Regards,

Dan.

It will be interesring to know what your VED will be on your vehicle with 18" wheels.  My new 4x4 Octy 111 SEL came with 17" wheels and because this standard fit the VED is Zero first year and £110 for 2016 until the change to £140 for all in 2017.  Skoda were unaware of the EU change made in Sep. 2015 for charging more for bigger wheels. If I could have ordered at the time 16" wheels then it would have been £30 instead of £110. The same vehicle can now be ordered with 16" wheels. Skoda then sent me £330 to cover the excess cost of the VED which I thought was very generous.

I'm not sure what the rules are in the UK but down here it's fine to run a lower speed rating providing you attach a decal to the lower right corner of the windscreen that says the speed rating is reduced to xyz kilometres.

load rating is the thing that has to be maintained.

Is this reference to steel wheels?  I have 16" alloys as "winters" for our mk2 VRS, and no problem with fitment?   These are Audi wheels incidentally.  I couldn't find any reference to size for winter wheels/tyres in the handbook but the wheels I have will give another inch of rubber before my wife batters the wheel off a kerb!!

Would of preferred steels TBH.

FWIW I have an Octy II running summers on 16" Vega alloys and a set of 16" 6.0J winter approved (with chains) Steel wheels which have the Nokian on it.

Should be fine.

The MK3 vRS will not take 16's. Due to the brakes being 340mm over the MK2FL 312mm.

If you have a mk3 that is not a vRS then the 16's off the MK2 should fit with no issues. See page 205 in the handbook. size for 16's is 205/55

Ok, mk3 are bigger, was beginning to think maybe I had the wrong brakes!!

Think it's 225/45x18 on at the minute, was going to go 205/60x16 as this is as close as I'll get to the circumference of the 18" tyre ??

Checked handbook, only reference to winter tyre sizes is if you're fitting snow chains.....205/55 or clearance for chains will be a problem I think?

You should have 225/40r18.

The proper 16" is 205/55r16 but I'd fit 205/60r16 or 215/55r16 as they are a better match.
