Featured Replies

Hi all ive puchased a fabia mk vrs 2012.checked my oil after about 3 weeks and the oil marker was on the orange ball.so topped up.rang colchester skoda coz its still under warrenty til jan 2016.i aparently havent got an engine oil warning light at all.they said they have check 3 other vrs and they dont have warning lights either.i think im being mugged off.anyone else got this problem and what do i do next.juzt thought a car that burns alot of oil not having a oil warning and oil temp gauge amazes me.cheers all

If you suspect your car is using oil then get yourself a pen and paper and start jotting stuff down then raise the issue with Skoda customer services.

Check your oil every other week or X amount of miles each time. Date it and roughly where the marker is, be sure to be on a level ground and with the engine cold.

I thought mine was using a lot of oil when I first got it so they put me in touch with a dealer and started the tests. They start off with an oil consumption test which involves them weighing your oil and asking you to do X amount of miles and return back to get it re-weighed. That's when you'll find out, they will then do spray jets thingy-m-bob inside the engine (someone will correct that bit) and ask to do the same miles as before. If it still fails then it's a new engine. I was covered under warranty so I got a free engine 100% paid for by skoda. They took into consideration the fact I rang them within 2 weeks of purchasing the car and I hadn't had it long.

As for the oil temp gauge mine has one on the maxidot, press your buttons on the wiper stalk and you should find it.

Have a quick browse through this, it may give you a little knowledge on what to expect

Goneoffski is your man with the knowledge, I'm sure he's firing up his notepad and paper as we speak.

Its a fantastic car and one of the best ive driven.ive only had it 5 months.how the hell can they tell me the car has no oil warning light

Nah no oil symbol.never known a car never to have one

Welcome to the forum.

Sorry,  i have a bad connection so give me a moment.

In the hills on a phone.

There is a Low Oil Warning Light.  there may also be a 'Low Oil' Warning message.

It might not show until the engine is 1.5 - 2 litres low from 3.6 litres in.

Oil on the Orange ball can show when the Oil is 1.3 - 1.5 litres low and no 'Low Oil light' or Message Shows.

But.

the Red 'oil can' & Maybe the 'Low Oil Pressure warning' shows, before the Low Oil Light. 'Yellow can' shows.

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/230124-low-oil-warning

see post #30.  this is the experience many owners have had.

STRANGELY VW / SKODA FACTORY TRAINED TECHNICIANS AND ENGINEERS SEEM OBLIVIOUS TO IT.

Just one of many 'Oil Warning' threads from 2011-2014/5 on this forum.

BE AWARE AFTER A 'LOW OIL LIGHT'  or LOW OIL WARNING MESSAGE.

That if you open the bonnet but do not top up the oil.

THE LIGHT or MESSAGE, will go out, only to come on after a few miles.

This is in the Owners Handbook if you read it in the relevant section.

.................

Check out the thread by vxh26 at the top of the page.

He has maybe never owned or driven or maybe even checked a vRS Twincharger's oil, but he compiled a good guide to the cars engines.

Thankyou all very much for your help.its a fantastic fun and pleasure to drive which i never thought i would say about a skoda.to tell the truth its the best car ive driven.because its pretty new 2012 didnt even think about a oil light.it doesnt even show when the ignition is turned on.just didnt know if it was a fault.when u go through the settings on the speedo the oil temp gauge shows 3 dashes all the time.was just checking my info before i go all guns blazing to skoda customer service coz skoda in colchester are very nice but surely they have had this before once again thanks all

The oil temp reading will take about 10-15 minutes of normal driving before it'll start at 50c, I wouldn't boot it until it's reached full temp which is around 90c.

If it's doesn't show anything after 15 minutes then something is wrong.

Oil temp setting is maybe not showing because a Technician changed the Fixed Service to variable Servicing and lost you the Oil Temperature.

Have them sort that out.

(I take it you know to go into the Menu, and then tick the choices you want to show.

But if the Tech set the Servicing and lost the Oil Temp, you still can not get it to display.)

Since the first post this morning from a cold start, below freezing last night.

i did 6 miles at 50 mph before the Oil temp showed at 50*oc.  Ambient temp is 12*oC

Since i started this trip after doing an Oil & Filter change, i have used 2 tanks of petrol,

done some Spirited driving, Motorway as well and the Indicated Oil Temp has never shown 90*oC.

It is getting to 88*oC indicated as a Max.

(i took pics a few times, because currently i have 4 Litres of Oil in. Not Recommend but i am trying it to see.

I have a new engine sitting to go in next week, and then i am rebuilding this one maybe.)

The vRS 100% has an oil warning light. It comes on the Maxidot display between the main dials on the dash. At first it will come on intermittently as a yellow colour. If the level drops further it will be permanently on and then turn red when the level is critically low (although never had mine that low lol). The light may not necessarily come on as soon as the oil level drops onto the orange marker.

It's tricky to say if yours is using too much oil as we don't know if it was under filled to begin with when the car left the dealership when sold to you. I'd just keep an eye on it from now on and monitor how much it's using. If it keeps going down to the orange marker over a relatively short period/mileage then you may have an issue. I'd also ring Skoda UK and enquire re the cars warranty history to see if there is any record of oil consumption tests etc. If there is then that might set alarm bells ringing. Good luck!

Just spoke to skoda head office which they were very nice and helpful.the vrs definitely has an oil light and they dont know why the colchester dealership told me different.they have now opened a case and will ring me asap with an outcome.lol i was going to leave it as well taking it for gospel coming from a main dealer

Dealers, eh?

Some Employees at 'Official Dealerships' , eh!.

Trained on the job often by someone that knows no more than they do.

So lets hope the 3 other vRS checked were cars they had for sale, and not customers, and once Skoda UK Customer Services talk to the Dealer Principal staff training can be organised.

It must be worrying for anyone caught up with the Diesel Emissions fiasco that Official Dealership

from Skoda, Seat, Audi and VW will be doing the 'Fixes'.

grendo1976,

Has your car had or needed any Warranty Work up to now,

Oil Consumption Tests, Breather Pipe Mod and Software Update, Heated Seat Elements etc.

Ask Skoda UK Customer Services. They can tell you.

& the DSG Service Campaign Work.   Was your car part of this, and has it been done?

Hi Grendo, fellow Colchester Skoda customer here. Just though tI would say hi.

I have always found them useful and helpful, but like all dealers I am weary. One thing I will say, is if you ever need a part and it can be found on an Audi, always call Chelmsford Audi, sooo many times I have found them to be cheaper.

Yeah main dealer has disappointed me.i could of been paying 100 odd pound an hour for them to tell me that.hopeful it will get sorted now.i will ask head office if anymore tests have been done.oil seems ok over the last fortnight.been doing alot of miles lately from colchester to Aylesbury every weekend to see my 19yr old in hospital coz he broke his neck and paralysed him self from the chest down from diving in a swimming pool in july 2014

Good Lord.

Apologies to the OP for slightly changing the subject briefly, but rather than start a new thread, has anyone ever done their own oil consumption test? I was quoted £240 to do it as I'm inquisitive about how much mine is using at the moment, but I thought it must be possible to do a fairly accurate test yourself at a much smaller cost.

Open the Bonnet.  Remove the Oil Cap.

Go under the car & remove the Drain Plug, and catch the oil coming out.

Or

Use a vacuum pump and pump the oil out of the Dipstick Tube. Saves £2 on a Sump Plug, and going under the car.

Remove the Oil Filter, and put on a new one, £4- £8.

Measure 3.6 litres of Oil and put it in.

Put the Oll Filer cap back on, run the engine, check you are happy the Oil is in.   Put a ickle bit more in if you want.

But maybe stick with what you have.

Note the Mileage, and where the Oil is Cold Check. and also Hot Check.    Then use the car.   Sometimes check the Oil cold.

£4 Filter,

£20-£30 5w 40 Full Synthetic oil to VW 502 00,  and buy a Vacuum Pump for future oil changes.

I'd recommend that an oil pressure guage be retrofitted to owners with vrs - its something that can be very useful

Or get the information from the cars ecu via the OBD port to your phone.

Oh,look!

Further to A Woodster's query, how would one get pipes / leads through from the engine bay to the cabin?  I would have thought that there would not be any obvious access points these days.  I wondered this in relation to the possible use of a combined oil pressure / temperature gauge.

Predictably enough, this thread was more about seeing how powerful the vRS engine was rather than excessive oil consumption which is of  much less concern ;)

To save time wasted reading that thread, the consensus seemed to be that one should access ODB data to determine boost pressure.
