To rear Wash Wipe or Not to Rear Wash Wipe.

Featured Replies

I read a comment in one of the forums on here that putting a wash wipe on the rear window will spoil the nice clear lines of the S3. Having looked at a picture I cannot help but agree.

Has anyone seen a picture of a wash wipe fitted??, if so is it on the top or on the bottom. I think maybe that Skoda may have that view or why would they offer them as a (FOC) option?.

I think that I might cancel the wash wipe on my order, I had no real problems on my S2 without one, and I ordered it without really thinking about it and because it was free.

Before I make any changes to my order could I ask if anyone has a S3  so fitted, they could post  picture on here to help me make up my mind.

Thanks in anticipation.

It’s on the bottom, not sure how this got signed off:

All depends how much you value rearward visibility coupled with convenience I guess. I've ordered with a rear wiper, yes it looks better without but I'd rather get in the car and clear the rear screen of dew or rain by flicking a switch rather than squeegee it manually or wait for it to blow off. And before some smarty-pants extols the virtues of rain-x or other such slippy water product, again I go for the convenience of not having to faff about applying such a product. In any case they're only any use when you've got enough air turbulence to assist.

It's all a matter of personal preference.

I'm lucky enough to drive out from a garage in the mornings, which helps a lot. S2 never had the wiper, and on balance I'm glad I didn't order this. Perhaps the reason this is the only free option is that some consider it a must from a driving point if view but from a design perspective it looks awful!

Lack of rear wiper is why I would never have an Audi A5 Sportback or A7.

The front wipers also spoil the clear lines, and nobody removes them. And the front lights. And the fog lights. And the mirrors. Of course all of them are mandatory, but they are there for one and only reason, safety.

In my case, next year I'll order the S3 with rear wiper. In fact I think it should be mandatory in each and every car, no matter if it is a sedan, a hatch or a wagon.

I have one on my Golf and I do not use it, also switched it off when selecting reverse with front wipers on.

Not sure why I do not use it, think I hate the clean/dirty difference... OCD ...grrr

Also if you use it it makes all the black sooty dirt dribble very noticeably down the rear of the car.

Have to drive along with rear heated screen before the rear window can be properly seen out of but then I have mirrors and used to no rear visibility on the works vans.

Given the choice think I would not have it on S3 as it spoils lines too :)

I guess it will have some negative impact on fuel economy when fitted too.

We've discussed this before several times here. Yes, rear wipers are functional and nobody disagrees but it just spoils the exterior design of SIII. I think SUK have done the right thing here by adding this feature as a 'free option'. If you want, add it and if not, dont! Simples  :p

Let's not talk about safety and being a mandatory feature. Nobody can drive without headlights and hence mandatory and of course you can live without rear wiper.....Me personally, no rear wiper on SIII.

If it was a regulatory requirement to have that rear wiper it would not have been optional. The wing mirrors give a perfectly adeqaute rearward view. I think it looks as if has been stuck on as an afterthought. On the other hand the light clusters, mirrors and front screen wipers are all part of a pleasing, aerodynamic overall design. I bet the impressive Cd results were cars without that rear wiper. Dont mean to upset anyone; just my personal opinion.

It will, however, be interesting to hear from owners how quickly that rear screen gets too mucky to see through . On my C class estate it takes only a few miles before the rear window is covered in road muck (When it is mucky weather outside )

Pete

Pete my MKI Superb has a similar rake on the rear window and it’s boot is about as deep as the tailgate on the S3, I have yet to need to clean the rear window between washes, I suspect the S3 will be the same.

On an estate or hatchback like a Golf then 100% you need one as the window gets dirty very quickly.

Any more pics of the rear wiper on s3?

I had a look at the dealer in Dumfries this afternoon, although it was closed, they had a "Jungle green" SE-L in the forecourt, that did not have a rear wiper and I thought it looked better, than the grey model in the window that did. Although I thought that the rear wiper did not look as bad as some as making out, but I could only see it from the drivers side.

The one in the Auto Express review has a wiper:

Personally I don't think it looks too bad. Those buying primarily for the styling may well disagree.

Skoda save money by making it an option, even a no cost option. They'd have received a lot of stick from the press if it had been made a cost option. Clever merchandising in my opinion.

When I come to replace my SII with a used SIII in a few years time I'll be ignoring all those who missed off the rear wiper.

First picture (red one) looks a bit strange. Also has names "Skoda" and "Superb" above rear lights where all other I saw until now have them under rear lights.

Other Superbs don't look that bad with rear wiper.

BTW, in Slovenia (EU) there is extra price of 77€ for rear wiper in all trim levels. I ordered it and I'm glad I did it.

The jungle green one in dumfries, what did you think of it in that colour,as people know i get mine very soon in that shade,it has really split opinion and makes me nervous!! Kevin

I added this to my reorder without really having a look at it... it does affect the look of the car a little was just thinking of functionality when I ordered mine. granted my current car doesn't have it.

Anyone with a pic of petrol blue and rear wiper...

As it is free in the UK I'd order it anyway.

If I didn't like the look once it arrived just pull the arm and spindle off, fill the hole in the glass with a rubber bung (as per young boy racers on their Corsa's), put all the bits in a box and give it to the new owner when you sell.

That way the coding is correct, the washer bottle has the increased capacity, the wiper stalk has the markings and functionality and you can simply adjust the spray nozzle off the glass onto the opposite side of the road to soak mobile phone users sat in traffic with their window open  :D

Check out the look, sooo clean!

Sooty,

I would say that apart from the white it was the closest to what is displayed in the brochure. from a distance it looked like that it was a matt finish (like the matt black Audi), until you got closer. I stopped to look at the rear wiper, but before I got back into my car, I said to the mrs that I seemed to have liked it as it was unusual. it was close to a the Cappuccino. It will hide the dirt well, far better than the white estate park next to it that never looked good due the road spray, which made it look bad. pity as I almost ordered my SE-L in White but went for Petrol (Lava) blue.

I order my new car with the rear wiper, but starting to get second thoughts, So I nipped into my local dealer in Stirling for a wee lookie. Although I think the non wiper vehicle looks better I don't think that I dislike the the vehicle with the wiper that much that I will as my dealer (diferent from Stirling) to removed it from my order and lose the particulaires that the wiper will have

The rear washer is likely to be incorporated into the wiper like on other models, so will require blanking off.

Any more pics of the rear wiper on s3?

Got a look at mine at the dealers. No regrets about opting for the rear wiper.

Many thanks for all your thoughts, contributions and pictures, in the end I decided to cancel the rear wiper.

The decision is based on looks but also the fact that I never missed a wiper on my S2. It is rare to see a wiper on saloon cars.

I accept fully people have different viewpoints, its just what floats your boat.
