Changing specs: missing sat nav

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm looking for some advice. I've taken receipt of a Vrs last week and it's noted that the sat nav is missing.

When I ordered the car sat nav was included as a standard item (I have the configuration email).

Obviously, as a standard item it doesn't then show up then on the official order as this only shows upgrades.

In the time between order and delivery the sat nav has become an optional upgrade again. I have now been delivered a car with no sat nav and had no opportunity to amend following Skoda's change of heart.

Had anyone else been caught in this trap?

Did you get anywhere with trying to rectify it?

Thanks!

Not much can be done about it, The offer for the sat nav ran for a limited time and some orders missed the end date, your dealer may offer some compensation but it's really up to them. I think it really comes down to did the dealer order in time for the free upgrade. The online configuration tool is not always accurate

If you have the proof that you understood the satnav to be included at the time you placed the order, then you are in a fairly strong position with the dealer. I would say you basically have 3 options.

1.Refuse the car as it is not your spec

2.Negotiate what money needs taking off the invoice for you to take the car.

3.If they are willing get them to retrofit the nav.

I have to admit even if they lift component protection and retrofit, the work in running the antennas will probably be prohibitive to them. Not sure I would want the car after that sort of butchery anyway. It will not be something you will be able to do yourself afterwards easily, if at all.

Left with the first two, only you can decide how much you want the option. It is quite a personal thing and some options mean more to some than others

Thanks both. I do feel for the dealer as I understand is not their fault. Grrrr Skoda.

They have said retro fitting is not an option but have offered a Tom Tom as way of compensating the missing feature.

Not ideal but could work. I'm wondering if getting the phone link thing working might be better though - have the phone link to the system and use that as the sat nav.

Did you order smartlink?

No I didn't order smartlink. I'm guessing it's just an activation code though?

I'd see if you could get smartlink as compensation to be honest. If they agree, you will have to wait a little while for the dealer to be given the systems/code or whatever, which could take a couple of months

As Aarond said ask the for the activation codes when it becomes available, I'm sure they will. I ordered smartlink instead of the sat nav, no brainer

I think someone else on here did get caught out by this and they were going to get/got Smartlink enabled instead by the dealer. Have a quick search and see if you can find it. It's definitely been a topic in the last month / six weeks.

I'll have a look for that. Thanks!

The way I understand it is that using Google maps via an Android phone and Smartlink is better than the factory sat nav anyway.

Better in the way that you get good traffic feedback and everything google reports. On top of that the voice commands with "Ok Google" are also better. You are missing on the maxidot integration though. Once you turn google maps on you no longer get the nice navi integration with the maxi dot and that is a huge miss in my opinion. I have smart link and amundsen and to be honest I find myself using the amundsen more often.

Hopefully smart gate is the answer but there are aftermarket modules such as the axion system that gives nav to the bolero unit

Is the Kenwood DNX525DAB a possible solution? It's an approved Skoda accessory for retrofit, so presumably wouldn't be a problem for the dealer to fit.

Thanks again all. I have been given a choice. Either a Tom Tom separate sat nav or to activate smartlink.

I think I'll go with smartlink.

Shame Skoda messed about with the configuration like that but I think it should work out Ok in the end

The problem with using Google maps is if you have no data signal at the point that you want to create a route. I think that even if you have the map itself downloaded, a connection is required to calculate the route.

Or just download the sygic app, no data connection required

If you're happy with that outcome, then all good.

One other thing to maybe consider, what is the price difference between Smartlink and Amudsman? If the difference is large I'd ask either Skoda or the dealer to make up the difference; free servicing or accessories.

Absolutely, if you have def paid for the option then I would be looking at a servicing deal.

I know amundsen is now standard (standard 2weeks after I ordered :( ) but....

Amundsen = £755

Smartlink = £150

There was no additional charge as it was being included as a standard item.

Ask the dealer for two things - do they know how to activate SmartLink, and what is the timescale for getting the licence code from Skoda?

As far as I am aware there are quite a few people still waiting after a few months and there doesn't appear to be a solution yet.

Sorry to **** on your chips, but don't let them lead you up the garden path on SmartLink activation

There was no additional charge as it was being included as a standard item.

As it wasn't included, that's the price the OP would have to pay (plus installation) to bring it up to 'standard' spec. He is technically £755 (or whatever the price of the satnav is) out of pocket. He could also argue the omission could affect the resale value of his vehicle. If two identical vehicles came up for sale, the only difference between them was an expensive satnav, which one do you think would sell, or achieve a better price? Also, if it was listed in the guides that satnav was a standard fitment, any switched on buyer would query why none was fitted.

How can he be out of pocket for not getting something which was free?

That's like me saying "I have 5 free footballs here to give away if anyone wants one. They sell for £15 each but I don't need them.".

5 people stick their hands up and take them and the 6th person says "I wanted one, but you haven't got any left. You owe me £15!"

Precisely.
