PS4 vs Xbox One

Featured Replies

Having just parted company with my entire 360 set up i'm not torn what to do.

I am leaning towards Xbox simply because probably 90% of my 360 time was spent playing Forza games, but all i seem to hear are PS4 fans.

The tech/apps etc i'm not bothered about as I've got a NUC mini PC plugged in for all my media needs so it's literally just a games console.

Xbox live with 4 free games a month (now they've made 360 titles backwards compatible) is bonus and almost justifies the ~£40 a year on its own.

That said my internet speed often struggles to hit 2MBps is that going to be a problem online?

I never had problems on 360 but i'd guess there's a lo more data to be sent & received on a next gen machine.

Hmm i'm off to browse eBay.

i need a Kinect-less 500GB console with a single controller to keep cost on the floor but as many games as i can get and including at least 1 Forza title.

Don't ask for much do I?!

There used to be a forza horizon 2 bundle without kinnect, same one we bought

Just be aware 500gb on a new gen console won't last long

On the subject of internet speed also be aware nowadays games like to update sometimes when you load them up

The updates now are frequently 1gb+ and I've known some over 5gb

These will take some downloading,no good if you had a 'spare hour'

Dunno if ps4 does same but if you like Forza/halo/elite dangerous then Xbox has them all

Both consoles have huge updates, the largest I think was the Halo games at over 10gb, Both consoles are great and I have both but I do prefer the Xbox one over the ps4. I prefer the Xbox due to the games, controller and Xbox live. 500gb won't last long but you can use an external usb 3.0 hard drive for game installs

That is one of my concerns.

The few times I've connected the 360 to Live the OS has updated and it's taken a good 40 minutes or so.

Downloading a 5GB update would take most of the day which i guess i could set going before i head to work

Can you set the xbox to auto turn off when downloads are complete; like i do with utorrent?

To be fair i've got a few xbox live trail codes so might test it and see how it goes.

If lives a no-no then meh i'll stay offline like i did for the last 18 months of my 360 time.

i'm not too worried about HDD space.

The plan is to limit the number of games I own.

My 360 collection was so large it was ridiculous. I owned some games for years and never played them (Gears of War/Lego Star Wars)

That's not never like i finished and never went back it's "never been in the disc tray never"

I want a core collection of games i'll repeatedly play (Forza/COD) and then run a buy->play->complete->trade in against replacement system for others.

That's the plan anyways!

I've also got an external 500GB USB hard drive which has sat used for 2 years since we got 3TB of NAS.

Doubt it's USB 3.0 compatible though.

That said eBuyer has a 2TB external drive for about £60 so it's not gunna break the bank

If the console is set to instant on it will download updates while switched off, that's the only downside on this generation, the huge updates. Microsoft recommend 3MB download as the minimum download speed for Xbox live

poop

While probably not a decent indicator in any way as a test i've just set kickass torrents highest seeded movie torrent "Good Dinosaur" to download

it's a 1.39GB avi file and is hovering around a 200kbps download speed

That makes ETA just over 2 hours

I'd assume that direct connection to Microsoft's servers would hopefully run a bit faster but even still the future looks like lengthy downloads.

Another thing in the XB One favour, if you have a library of 360 games is that you can now play an increasing number of these older titles on the XB One, compatibility is being added all the time.

As I only use my 360 for the Plex app I see no reason to update yet.

With infinity 2 which I have, download times are nothing. a 10GB download can be had in no time at all at 75meg.

No fibre in my area so I'm stuck with phone line based 2.5MB max

Either that or there's some community wireless thing that'll guarantee 5MB or 10MB or 20MB etc but they charge a hefty fee and want "fair usage" for the "unlimited" downloads.

Found an Xbox One console on eBay though that I can pick up just off the M5 on the way home after Christmas.

500GB with a single controller and 6 games for less than the cost of buying a new console

I'm loving my ps4 but am missing a good racing game...hopefully gran turismo will appear eventually and be decent.

If you're not tied in anymore to your ISP I would look round

A new provider will test your connection and try n speed it up at first

When we first moved here we got 2mb,later on 8mb non fibre

We're on a new build estate and its a well circulated fact that the internet offering is appalling.

No fibre and poor connection to the local hub which is too far away really.

Hence a local group setting up http://edgenetworks.co.uk.

It really is shocking that so many people get such poor internet access on a fixed line in this day and age!

I'm sat here inside my house with 4G on my phone running a speed test and getting 61mb down and 19mb up!

A friend has a new build coupla miles from us and they still don't have internet at all - 2 months in

A shame all game developers write games assuming we all have fibre when sadly so many don't

Couldn't be bothered to wait for all my updates to download so thought as i'm at my mum's for new year and she has fibre i'd do it there instead.

Forza 6 took took about 14 hours to download at home but i had 5 games update in about 4 at her place.

Happy days.

Untill they dropped the bombshell they'd moved from unlimited to a 20GB account and i'd pushed them over their threshold.

They were already at 17GB and i added a further 20 to it.

BT charge £1.50 for each extra GB so i now owe my parents £30 for something i could have just left downloading for free at homewhile i wasn't there!!

Special start to the year!

On a better note now it's up and running it is brilliant.

Forza is great and Call of Duty Ghosts looks and plays amazing.

Yet to try the other 6 games but expect big things.

Hard drive wise with those 8 games now fully installed i'm up to about 80% full.

Annoying given a single full (non-arcade) "free" Game with Gold is 30GB for which i now don't have space.

Given even with nothing installed you only get ~360GB you'd not have space on the console for all the free games Microsoft give you over the year.

Seems stupid to me.

Just to add the Xbox supports external hard drive the ps4 does not however, the ps4 supports hard drive upgrades with no effect on the warranty and for example you can pick up a compatable 2tb hard drive on Amazon for £77.

Here's a good read for anyone who wants to know the differences. http://www.techradar.com/news/gaming/consoles/ps4-vs-xbox-720-which-is-better-1127315

yeah shame it needs USB 3.0 otherwise there is a 500GB harddrive sat next to the xbox doing nothing

will see how it goes

Are free games really free it you have to pay £65 to store them?!

even still at that rate 2 xbox one games and 2 360 games = 48 games for £65 = £1.35 each

still not exactly bad....

Yeah I think that's one area that Sony defiantly dropped the ball on having the ability for external hard drives although they do make up for it by supporting internal hard drive upgrades.

I think we are all old enough and wise enough to know you get very little for free in the world today...... Like the saying goes "you gotta pay the cost to be the boss"

Ive got both machines & i was always xbox from day one, but problem with updating the internal storage & the crap new windows 10 menus has driven me more now to the cheap ps4 i picked up a few months ago. it was a 500 gb model that within a hour i had upgraded to 1tb version, i know the xbox can be upgraded to external hdd with i ended up doing but hate loads of bits added by wires.

Get project cars, great game m8

I have a few racing games and they're all good in their own way.

Project cars for a more hard core simulation type experience

Drive Club for a more arcade type pick up and play racing

Need for Speed for some nostalgic fun (Gone back to their NFS: Underground roots!)

And who doesn't love a good hoon around on GTA5!!??

Some do. You can choose to pay less per month for a capped package but most are unlimited.

...most are unlimited.

Most but not my mum's apparently :(
