Advice re buying new

Featured Replies

I am hoping to get some experienced advice on buying our next Octy. Current car is a 56 Estate Elegance 1.9Tdi DSG.

I am intending to buy something similar probably the 1.6 Tdi DSG. I have been looking a various online sales sites, and there seem to be big discounts available, having only ever bought direct from a dealer in the past (apart from a "Personal import" about 25 years ago) I am unsure about the outcome of such sales.

I would love to hear some personal views on pros and cons and particulary any definite recommendations or NO/NOs.

Depends on how you look at it really.

I ordered my car through carwow and when i had chosen my offer it put me in contact with the dealer and from there it went through the usual procedure. What i liked about it is that i was fully in control of the deal and i already felt like i had got good value for money and the dealership were just fulfilling the order and weren't really in a position to push me on anything. Had i walked into the local dealership i would have definitely felt pressed to do what suited them more.

Ordered ours through a broker no issue, it's arriving by flat back tomorrow :D

Go through Carwow and Paul Miller at Dennis Horton Lincoln will probably be best. Highly recommended!!

Hi

I'm also looking at a new vrs 230 but Dtd don't have it listed yet...what the best dealer people have found on carwow etc?

Many thanks

Mike

Have a look at www.buyanewcaronline.Co.UK.

I took delivery of a new vrs to my spec 3 weeks ago within 2 days of the estimated timeline. Discounts above and beyond anywhere else I found.

You don't get the touchy feely service of a dealer but if you want a car at the best price......

I bought through New-Car-Discount.com this year - the first time in over 50 years that I've not used a dealer. Their service was first class, friendly and completely trouble-free and £6k discount on a list price of £34k was the icing on the cake. More than happy to recommend them.

Hi there, I have just taken delivery of a brand new mk3 VRS diesel estate from Horton Skoda and I have to say they were really good to deal with. It's my second new car from them and they gave me the best deal out of everyone. I also got some unexpected freebies that I'd expected to pay for on collection day. Paul Miller was the salesman who helped me-he was very good and Alan (one of the other salesman) let me have a spin in his special edition vrs tsi dsg 230 hatchback while some paperwork etc was being sorted-that was a blast. Highly recommended dealership.

I bought a car from them in 2009. Wouldn't do it again, I knew I would not be the first keeper on the log book however I was promised the log book within three months. It never turned up. I had to chase it up no end, then they had my address wrong. In the end I had to go through DVLA for them to sort it out. Cheap car but too much hassle.

They may have sorted their game out now but it totally put me off buying a car like that again..

Buy from buyanewcaronline.co.uk now and you are the 1st registered keeper of a car delivered by a UK main dealer ....... And you'll get circa double the discount compared to a certain main dealer in Lincolnshire!

My workmate used drivethedeal.com for his focus st and got 20% discount-but he was a cash buyer and had to take out finance from ford as part of the Ts & Cs but then just cleared it. More often than not with brokers, they don't do the same finance deals as the dealerships-you won't get the 0% and a stunning discount and are not interested in a part-ex. I tried the broker route before going to the dealership and I have to say the broker route didn't suite me as I had a part-ex and wanted to do the 0% PCP Skoda finance. Each to their own and if you're happy with the deal etc.

I used quotes from Carwow to negotiate a good deal with my local dealer. In the end, I paid just under list price for a car with £2k of extras on top.

I prefer dealing with someone face to face local to me if I possibly can, which is why I didn't go with a Carwow or New Car Discount offer. I have to say, the very poorly written emails I got from New Car Discount also put me off quite a bit. Not very professional.

The broker I used was quite happy to PX.

We then took out finance at 5.8% with them.  Even with the same down payment, same term the GFV was less (which is ideal as we plan to buy at the end), the monthlies were less than Skoda finance and in the bracket of what we wanted to pay and in the end it still works out cheaper (because of the massive discount 23% we got) than if we'd got a tiny discount from a Skoda but with the 0%.  So after the 4 years including the finance cost added to the total it was still cheaper than a dealer and 0%.  So really the 0% deal was worth squatt to us!! :)

Got mine through carfile.net. Fantastic service; got the price with them, and was then put in contact with the dealer to complete the purchase at the agreed price with none of the haggling and negotiation that does my head in.

Pretty sure I'll never buy a new car directly through a dealer again. Only downside I could see would be if you're after any promo finance deals which the broker couldn't offer extra discount on.

New-Car-Discount.com is who we used and they have been excellent.  No poorly written emails at all and very pleasant to deal with on the phone.  Sounds like you caught them on a bad day maybe!!  (typing this as the car is being delivered lol!!)

Thanks to all who have replied, nearly all positive, so when I have finally decided what model/options I will pursue the online dealer route. I will obviously see what offers I might get from the local dealer, but doubt they can match what I have seen online?

Totally snap on all points!

My local said their best offer was £250 more than the one I got from the broker. They also said that they don't believe the other offer is legit and they'd be 'surprised' if it was truly that price. They then seemed quite arsey with me when I said I'd save the £250 and go with the broker.

Been happily driving it for a year now and bypassed the local dealer for it's first service.  :D

That's great for you, but all I can state are the experiences I encountered when I was negotiating for my vehicle in summer as someone who tried most well known brokers and many dealerships. It could be I picked a bad time to negotiate but in the end I got just shy of 11% discount on a 0% deal with a dealer. Monthly payment and deposit were where I wanted to be and they took my part-ex giving me a good price for it. I also got a few freebies I expected to pay for on the day. I'm not saying I wouldn't use a broker in the future, but I got lots of 'we can't match what you've been offered by your dealer'. That to me said that I had a good deal already or they just didn't want my business. As I said, if you're happy with your deal, that's all that matters!

If my dealer had got to within £250 of the online price I would have gone with the dealer. As it was he was well over £1000 out. The online price was 20% off list, while the best the local dealer could offer was less than 10% off.

Just found out the 0% and 1k is not available with the 230..Vrs. ..nuts

Oh poo!! What a shame!! Defo a broker now then!

As stated earlier I bought through dennis horton and it was better than 20% discount then 5% APR. It was in line with pch quotes from simpsons that you see on Facebook but on a pcp.

Also got the best px quote no fuss, no selling bull**** products on top, free delivery to my work and a tank of fuel too.
