Iridium Spark Plugs

Featured Replies

Good morning,

Has anyone tried the iridium spark plugs, and especially the Denso IK20 or IK22 ? Any comments?

I think I'll be the first one to use these spark plugs...

I think you may well be correct :D

I don't think so. VW guys use them all the time. I have a set of IK20s but I haven't put them in yet. There's two things to remember with these:

1) They're gapped wrong for our cars, so reduce the gap from .040 to .028 if you're chipped.

2) Do NOT touch the electrode with anything hard. Iridium is extremely brittle and contact with metal parts will make it pretty much crumble.

I'll probably be going with the IK22s actually, since I have over 100hp more than stock (for which the IK20s are suitable). Also, these are great for nitrous, and they'll last longer than the copper plugs.

Funnily enough I saw these at my garage when I was having the Forge DV fitted. Apparently I need these too...:(

I have ordered the IK22s to try, their life is for 15K klms max.

What is wrong with the standard ones which have a life of 60K?

Nothing's wrong with the standard ones, as there's nothing wrong also with the standard dv, the standard light bulbs, the standard exhaust etc etc ..., but we all are going to replace (some day, sooner or later) many of them for better performance ... ;).

When I had my car remapped, I did ask if the standard plugs needed upgrading to something better and the answer was: No.

Denis, I also received the same answer.

But let me try them and then I can always inform you (if you're interested of course) if there is any difference ...

Yes please. Meanwhile I must buy myself a suitable spark plug spanner - unless there is one in the tool kit? :)

Fitted the IK22 (and the power gasket).

Much better response at low revs, especially with the 4th and 5th gear. I am very satisfied.

I have an older dyno plot, a new dyno day (with the IK22 and the gasket) is planned for next week, I will post both plots for you to see if there are any differences ...

Please keep us up to date. Could be a nice 'cheap' mod. :D

Used to do the copywriting for the European Denso Iridium distributor sales pack and DM, so I know all about the advantages claimed by the manufacturer... :D

It sounded like top stuff - they are specifically aimed at performance-car owners - but it would be good to hear the feedback of someone actually having installed them. Keep us posted!

Dyno results No 1 - 207,3ps/4874rpm & 339,7Nm/3754rpm

Dyno results No 2 - 223,2ps/5391rpm & 342,1Nm/3553rpm

Dyno No2 made yesterday afternoon, having installed the Denso IK22 and the power gasket (which is doing an excellent job by keeping temp low enough).

I believe that these 2 mods are MORE THAN EXCELLENT !!!

I can verify GR Octavia ABTs figures (i was present too).

We made in addition some Vag-Com measurements (air intake temp block 011) and the higher temps were very good.

Needless to say that the intake manifold was not so warm and you can touch it bare hand when rest engine parts was impossible to do..

The plot was showing clearly the staedy increase from 3500 up to redline with no fluctuations.

The spark plugs contribution was proved in the low to starting boost area where the plot was sifted up and earlier RPMs..

I'll post my results on these when I'll have them up...

Getting some fitted tomorrow. Cheers Greek chaps!

What size and type of spark plug spanner does one need to remove the plugs?

(Puffs out chest and proudly says) I have absolutely no idea :D

But you knew that didn't you? :rofl2:

You still won't be able to keep up on sunday Rich :p :D

I'm just hoping the new plugs and twelve coats of Mer might just make up the difference :p

And more to the point... It's like that is it? (Strokes chin smiley)

for spark plugs you get a specific socket in any half decent set that is longer and usually has a rubber wotsit in it to "grip" the plug for easy placement/removal

I'll try and have a look at mine when I go to work Denis (it's in the boot of the car). It's the small format hexagon since the plugs are down in deep bores in the head.

You know he's been waiting nearly a year for that reply? :D
