VRS gearbox issues

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a VRS estate 2015 version diesel 6 speed

I have been having issues coming out of reverse and going into first

Its still selects reverse even though it looks like its in first

its been back now 5 times and technical have just come back and advised that its a characteristic of the car.

To say im lost for wards is an understatement and wondered if anyone else had similar issues with their

Thanks in advance

I have had no problems going from reverse to 1st in my car.

In fact I dont ever remember a time in 60k km where I have wrongly selected reverse again when going for 1st.

When you release it from reverse the stick should pop-up, engaging the gater-lock.

This results in sliding easily into 1st & being blocked from going back into R.

It shouldnt be possible to select reverse again without pushing the shifter back down.

thanks gabbo

it does "pop" out of reverse but when you select 1st its still actually in reverse. the rear sensors are still on as well

the position of the gear stick is was looks like 1st gear

Then I would describe this as a "fault" not a "characteristic".

Some people have had sucess involving SkodaUK directly when support/help from a dealership is not forthcoming.

My Octavia 2.0 TDI Elegance did this a little when new....gradually stopped doing it and is good as gold now.

My few week old GTD also does this but I think with use and as the linkage wears in it will likely stop.

Bit scary though when you go to pull off and go backwards :-S

after 8k id have thought it would be ok. but clearly not.

by the sounds of it theres a massive design floor in the linkage or gearbox

After reverse, have you tried going into 2nd then back into 1st.

Why not try double de-clutching as well  , this isn't the 1950's pre syncro era!

Try logging with SUK directly as others have advised

Pretty normal in any manual box to go into 2nd and then back to 1st, if 1st didn't work....

It isn't that he can't select first, when putting in 1st it selects reverse, or has not actually disengaged reverse. It just needs the linkage adjusting.

I agree with Andy, the should try adjusting the clutch cables again.

If you have no joy, ring SkodaUK or contact them through social media.

This seems quite a good way to get a companies good support & attension these days.

Cables?? Will it not be hydraulic?

Yes it is, i think Gabbo means the gearlinkage cables....

Yes I was meaning the linkage between the shifter/gearstick mechanism & the selector arms on the gearbox itself.

I'd expect that this is a metal/solid cable in a plastic sheath.

gear link adjusted

new gear linkage fitted

re adjusted and still happened

by the way that was the answer from skoda technical not the dealer... the dealer wont give me my car back as its unsafe in their opinion..

now with a director in VW to look into

thanks for the replies

Good for the dealer! That SUK try to dispute this is amazing.

I had exactly the same problem, the first symptom was the shifter jumping or popping back up whilst still reversing, then as the miles went on it started sticking in reverse when I had selected first, probably only once a month in the early days but by 50k it was probably a couple of times a week so off to the dealer it went. They changed the gear selector mechanism, which included the cables back to the gear box. All has been well since. Interestingly, a mate at work recently bought a 62 plate Audi A3 with the same 150ps engine and manual gearbox combination, his is on less than 20k and it has the same problem but Audi are refusing to help at the moment saying they can't replicate the problem. This must be a known issue on MQB cars within the VAG Group so I can't believe that they dare to fob customers off with potentially dangerous issues, I had a few issues when maneuvering in tight spaces, what if you set off but accidentally reversed into a passer by?!!

My car does it a few times a month. Normally if I'm in a rush but the selector is definitely in the first position yet the gearbox is in reverse. Thought it was me at first but after a few times I realised it was the car. Will enquire about it on its service but its hard to replicate at the moment. Hopefully you can get somewhere with your car

Mine does it occasionally. Seems to possibly be if I reverse a little quicker than I normally would? Very hard to tell. And when it does it I can repeatedly try to select 1st with no avail, only when the car is stopped completely for a few seconds will it work.

Very hard to replicate though as at the minute it's very rare, so I haven't said anything. If it becomes more frequent I'll mention it to the dealer.

Sounds like a common fault.

Think you all need to take ur cars back and moan. Dont accept no for an answer.

Ill keep u all posted

To the OP & other with the problems & know exactly what is causing it & possibly how to fix it!

I have a MK7 Golf with the MQ250 6speed gearbox. This gearbox has been around for quite awhile before the MQB platform cars.

I wanted to get rid of the vagueness & get the precise nature of my old Fabia's gearbox which had metal brackets, metal levers & ball & socket joints, basically no play & the gearstick would move if you revved the engine too much when stationary!!

The current setup in the Golf etc has plastic abutment brackets, plastic relay levers & rubber bushes everywhere, so loads of play. Now I have done a full metal Audi TT relay lever (side to side), metal bushes & full Audi TT short shift on both the front to back (arm). This has taken out all the slop & nice & positive.

However in reverse the knob "pops" . What is happening is the spring tension in the central shaft is springing the reverse lock out hook, (on the end off the gearknob shaft) off the reverse lock out plate ramp. This is because there is too much side to side movement & slack in the cables.

To test this put the car in reverse & move the knob sideways, you should feel it move & pop back up, the gearbox is still in reverse, just the knob has moved of the ramp. The lock out tab/hook stops you moving the knob to the far left until you press down, then the hook can clear under the barrier tab. The lock out hook then slides over the lock out plate ramp which holds the knob down whilst you are in reverse. This all happens directly under the gearknob shaft & has nothing to do with the gearbox.

Now the side to side movement (from drivers to passenger side) is controlled by the vertical relay lever (not the weighted arm). When you lock the gearstick with the 5mm pin & the gearbox selector with the black lever pin there is now a fixed distance between the connections at both ends of the cables. The Bowden cable catches ( cable end eyes on the gearbox end) have some room to accommodate cable stretch etc. However I think that VAG is making the cables for the side to side too long!

When I fitted my all metal weighted arm, no problems, but my side to side is causing the gearknob to "pop". When I locked the units & had the cables "free" I did the following to test the theory:- Lock the gearstick (inside), clamp the springs on the eyes (engine bay), press down on the selector (engine bay), now as you slowly allow it to lift up feel with the locking lever for the lock hole. I noticed that the eye was now pushing the cable back towards the cabin & therefore away from reverse. The cable is too long & is bottoming out in the eye, then as you need to lift the selector more to get it into lock position it pushes the cable more & is bending it out of the way.

I have had problems ever on the OEM levers etc so have loads of other people!!

My how to guide which is still in progress on the TT shift kit for the MQ250 gearbox.

I am currently running the plastic lever but all metal bushes etc & very good, no popping out etc. I will be cutting the bobble off the end of the cable to give me about 6mm shorter in length to make the cable sit natural & not pushed to use the metal lever as the plastic one is a weak point!! might have to cut more off, but better in stages!

Sorted my problem of the gearstick popping in reverse!

I have put the info in my previously mentioned MK7 forum thread, VAG have a defect in the plastic eye! also the cable might be too long!

Tried mine this morning... Into reverse, wiggle the stick and up it pops. Does this means its out of adjustment or its broken?

Adjustment needed, however because I have found what I consider a manufacturing defect in the plastic eye as per my thread on the mk7 forum when I was swapping over to a full Audi TT metal setup I recon that the problems I was having before could have been cured by just drilling out where the cable fits inside the eye. Now I have the added benefit of a metal lever & shorter shift!

I would normally take it apart and look with problems like this but its still under warranty so will speak to the dealer first.

Thanks for the info though
