DAB Radio Interference

Could you use a ferrite core beads on the taxi data head to reduce the interference? Are there any power cables etc for this system in close proximity to the dab antenna? i.e. near fuse box / infotainment system.

The control box for the data head is fitted in the space at the end of the dashboard, i didn't see if that's where the fuse box is though. Where is the dab antenna located on the hatch?

Top 3 elements of the rear screen that go through the high level brake light.

You have put the control box right next to the fuse box, where the antenna cables come down the A pillar and also the MIB unit itself - I am not surprised you are getting interference :)

Could you relocate it to behind the touchscreen or under the passenger seat?

incidentally, did your DAB improve post dealer visit?

No improvement, DAB still drops out, radio fails to revert to FM. So new software did nothing to resolve the issue.

I have emailed the dealer and will be contacting SUK.

It was fitted by a two-way radio company, I didn't want to attempt touching anything! There was quite a lot of cable and the control box itself is a fair size. Would clamping a ferrite bead to the cable beside the box make any improvement?

So frustrating. Feeling fortunate that my DAB is fine and also that my DAB to FM "link" works fine. Only little gremlin I have is that the artwork on my SD card sometimes works, sometimes doesn't, but the sound quality is never compromised so it's not a massive issue for me. Really hope you get it sorted as it would properly do my head in.

Chaps not 100% related but I have a MY16 Golf GTD with the MIB2 Amundsen equivalent nav....had a number of issues with it since getting the car....screen coming on blank or unit coming on with no audio output....but also DAB auto switching is pants and occasionally drops out altogether and has to be soft reset to bring it back.

Cars in with VW at the moment and there was an update available for the infotainment...car was only registered end of Sept. Takes a few hours to apply apparently. Id wager a similar update will be available for the Skoda MIB2 units in due course if not already.....though doesnt obviously help those with MIB1.

I'll let you know what the version info is (as am sure it will be similar) and if it makes any real difference to stability...particularly around DAB.

Got my car back on Friday, the dealer still thinks things are not as they should be but SKODA are suggesting all is as it should be.

DAB still drops out and on the Radio Newcastle local station does not swap to FM

SKODA UK have stated "For station tracking across various frequencies, the DAB station and the FM station must broadcast the same station code, or the station in FM that corresponds to the equivalent in DAB, must be indicated through the DAB. Once the corresponding FM station has been found, (FM) is displayed after the station name....." Now I'm not sure if this is correct or I'm being fobbed off. Metro Radio another local station does auto change to FM.

I'm also sure that nothing was done re the random screen presses early in the morning.Dealer said it was the cold that affected it, Last wednesday it was 10 degrees outside when the radio did it's morse code impression!

So I'm no further forward.

They aren't interested in fixing it. Log a case with Skoda UK.

I'm getting really annoyed with the number of DAB dropouts travelling down the M6 from Manchester to Birmingham, there are in the region of 10 dropouts. I can prove it is signal strength related turning off the mute function and I don't get any dropouts.

I get the same with the auto switching, BBC Radio Lancashire won't auto switch due to different names between DAB and FM.

Andyvee, I have logged it with Skoda UK.

They told me I had to take the car to the dealer, the dealer then was in contact with SUK and you can see the response they gave me!!

I have emailed Radio Newcastle to see what they say, just awaiting their response.

I am seriously considering replacing the current sharkfin for one that has FM and DAB as well. The only thing that is putting me off is the amplifier for the window antenna. Would I need to redirect before or after the amplifier? Are there any impedance issues potentially?

The Mk 2 sharkfin with the screw in bee sting had all the right connections but mine failed after 9 months due to damp. I purchased from a company that said it was a Skoda Breaker in Poland. Should have set alarm bells ringing! While it worked it was really good with no drop out on my commute. Mine is still so poor that I listen to digital via my iPhone.

Thanks

Expect it to be worse on the estate

Ive had my Estate 2 weeks now and so far, touchwood, not one DAB drop-out, very impressed with sound quality too, Chaz & Dave have never sounded so "Pucker" :D

I have 14 Plate Skoda Octavia Mk III Estate with Amundsen DAB Radio.  The DAB is often cutting out, and switching to FM, with a resultant loss of quality.  It's been once to the dealer to have it's software upgraded, but with no joy.  What can I do about it?  Is the replacement of the Sharkfin Aerial a solution?  The 3-year waranty runs out in 6 weeks, and I am keen to get any fix done before then.

Do you have a dashcam or a USB power supply plugged into the 12v socket? If so they can interfere with DAB signals.

Hi, yes some of time there is a USB charger plugged in.  I will have to see if the problem occurs when it's not plugged in.

You won't get it fixed under warranty as Skoda won't accept that there is anything wrong.

I'll be glad to see the back of my O3 as it is the worst car I have had for DAB, and it is all down to the aerial design. A Fabia parked next to my car gets 100% signal strength and mine is dropping off to the point of no reception.

Got a 16 plate Combi. The DAB is strong and the only area it has dropped to FM is around Taddington Dale on the A6 in rural Derbyshire and M74 around Hamilton  . I've travelled over much of the UK mainland and am impressed with DAB.

The DAB on my 2013 Columbus was terrible until I updated the firmware. However, it then became almost non-existent when I fitted a dash cam, until I replaced the supplied power supply with a TomTom one, much cleaner and now I rarely get any drop-outs.

I think part of the problem is the USB charger, as plugging it in causes a DAB drop out and switch to FM.  Going forward will try other more expensive USB chargers inc TomTom (which I have).  Thank you all for the advice.

PS Does anyone know if it possible to get a better aerial, such as swapping the shark fin on the roof?

The DAB aerial isn't in the shark fin. It is the NSR quarterlight on the estate, or the top 3 elements of the heated rear screen on the hatch.
