DAB Radio Interference

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My DAB radio cuts out every few seconds the majority of the time, I've come to the conclusion that my taxi datahead is causing interference because it seems to cut out a few seconds before the datahead updates.

If this is the case, can it be rectified? I'm fed up with FM radio so was pretty chuffed at having digital, but it's even more of a pain that I can't use it! Lol

Two things that I am aware of.

If it is an estate there in a known issue relating to the antenna in the rear quarter light that Skoda refuse to acknowledge! The

other issue I have noticed is that the DAB will cut out if I charge a mobile from the lighter socket. It doesn't do it if I use the cars own USB port

.

Anything similar with yours?

What exactly is the issue with the antenna in the Estate?

It's a hatch I've got, and I charge my phone and sat nav from the lighter socket. Haven't tried charging from the USB however I'll give it a go. The obvious cut-out comes when my taxi data unit transmits, I monitored it most of yesterday and noticed this

The signal strength on the estate is lower than on the hatch so it keeps dropping out on DAB.

Is there a way I can shield the dab aerial to prevent interference? When my gps equipment is off the dab signal is perfect and stays that way!

I doubt it - more chance of shielding the GPS? Is it transmitting data?

Yeah it sends and receives data constantly such as my location and job info. After speaking to another driver with a mkIII he has the same issue

I've had absolutely no issues with DAB on my estate. MY16. Also the DAB to FM sync when DAB is not available is seemless too.

Sorry guys, didn't read the latest posts. Sounds like you've established its not an antenna issue and the GPS is your problem. Is it just DAB? Is FM ok when the GPS is working?

Yup it's only the DAB radio, FM works fine but I'm fed up with the same stations so was chuffed when I bought the car and saw it had digital radio. The mast icon with a cross through it shows up whenever the gps unit transmits

If the GPS unit only has a cheap transmitter it may not be transmitting on exactly the right frequency to the receiver. A cheap transmitter can result in transmission across a frequency range as well as the required frequency, this could cause problems with DAB depending on the frequency involved.

A bit like a mobile phone, when you place it to close to a switched on FM radio and you hear the clicks and data transfer through the speakers. DAB will not like this, and since there is no in between, even a small amount of interference will cause loss of signal. DAB in the UK is based on 1980s technology, as such things like error correction are very poor.

it could also be transmitting on more power than needed, as a result it effectively jams the DAB signal.

Does anyone know if you have Amundsen or Columbus if its less likely to happen, I believe the car gets a better aerial?. But I might be making this up

The DAB aerials are in the rear screen on the hatch (top 3 elements that pass through the high level brake light) and in the C-pillar side windows on the boot of the estate. The shark fin you get with models with navigation has no effect on DAB reception.

Thanks mate, very informative, so I can maybe expect dodgy reception on DAB then. Funnily enough the demo Skoda sent me was a saloon(Im getting an estate), and the DAB did drop out a few times on Planet Rock

Expect it to be worse on the estate

Have to conceed DAB is pretty **** in my MIB2 Discover Nav equipped GTD.....I think perhaps worse than my MIB1 Octavia estate.

FM switching doesnt work properly, drops out a fair amount (though in fairness I live around the south downs and on the coast so signal isnt fabulous here) but I have had it where DAB loses signal altogether and the only way to get it back is soft resetting the unit.

For a company that purports to build robust reliable cars, the bugs in the MQB infotainment systema leave a little something to be desired.

DAB on my Scout is poor and does not switch to FM, despite the radio being set up to do this.

Car has been to the dealers today, was late getting the car picked up so got no feedback on what was done.

I have to soft-reset my Columbus MIB frequently to get DAB back, very annoying.

I am giving some thought to replacing the sharkfin one with a DAB antenna in. I dont want the Old Skoda one with the screw in bee-sting as the where very prone to damp and failure.

Does anyone know if there is an SMB or Fakre i the headlining above the quarter light that I can plug into? Any antenna suggestions?

Thanks

incidentally, did your DAB improve post dealer visit?

Could you use a ferrite core beads on the taxi data head to reduce the interference? Are there any power cables etc for this system in close proximity to the dab antenna? i.e. near fuse box / infotainment system.

Looking at the workshop manual, there is an amplifier module on the C pillar next to each rear quarterlight. Can't tell what the connections are though.
