Gauges, trying to gauge interest....

Cheers! As regard to cost - the kit cost me Euro250 from Autosystems.ie in Ireland. EDIT: I fitted 'em myself - so I can't comment on fitting costs.

For that you get absolutely everything needed to fit them, all senders, wires, connectors, pipes, even cable ties!

I was worried about the same things as mentioned above - they are quite low, but I don't find I need to constantly read the boost guage. I just floor it and occasionally glance down to confirm all is well and I always see the same - just short of 10PSI - which is good enough for me!

I tend to make more use of the oil temp, as I find it a better indication of engine temp than the standard water temp guage. Oil definately warms slower than water and it makes me more careful with the throttle until I'm all warmed up properly :)

EDIT2 : Yes, they illuminate green. Different colour led's are available if required eg blue for VW.

I think, in the real world, that would look more than a bit poo.

I have a DIN sized 3 gauge pod waiting to fit but I've only bought a boost gauge so far. From the instructions it looks reasonably straightforward to fit.

Problem is I'm not sure what gauges to get to fill the other two holes! It's plumbing them in that worries me! How to oil temp/pressure gauges work? Or thos flashy fuel/air mix thingies.

not sure about the air/fuel meters but my oil temp was very simple to fit, just a little fiddly, it just replaced a bing ontop of the oil filter housing, just fiddly to get to...

I like the look of that gauge too...

Has anybody any experience of them?

I'd need to come up with a non-scally, non-theft magnet and OEM looking installation for it though A 2 or 3 gauge mount for the cubby hole so that I could include an analogue clock (actually visible to the passengers! ) and possibly an oil temp gauge would be good.

having just got started on a new stereo install my a pillar pod is messing with the imaging so looking at making myself some pods in the wing mirror pods for the 2 I have...

Where's the best point to tap into the line to measure the boost pressure? Having had a quick look, there's a narrow dimeter pipe leading to the DV (probably not ideal) and and one near the throttle body.

I assume that you mean in the inside of the doors rather than in the mirror itself?

Yes I do mean inside the doors! Where the stock tweeters were.

I tapped my dv from the fpr, take off the top cover and you will see at the front of the engine a circular thinkg on the right. From the back of that there is a pipe that comes off, not normal rubber but braided, I hooked mine up there...

:) I did wonder.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I've ordered some - shipped from Oz on Thursday so should be with me soon - I'll let you know what they're like and take lots of install pics.

I've just bought one of the Auto Gauge ones too.

Will the pack of DIN mount ones from autosystems fit a TDI ?? Anyone fitted extra guages to a TDI before ??

I'd have thought so. Pressure and temperature gauges just need an input from a suitable source.

I'll be attempting to fit the boost gauge on Sunday.

I removed the radio and cubby-hole very easily using the junior hacksaw blade method. so hopefully the rest of the job will be that easy...

'stealth' boost gauge now partially fitted and functioning.

-25 inHG at tickover and something more than 10psi on part boost

-difficult to see whilst moving as the backlight isn't connected so the gauge is still in stealth mode:)

Getting the tube through the bulkhead was very easy. I wasted time taking the wipers off (which was also easy enough), though. The most accesible grommet was next to/behind the pollen filter which are the other side to the wipers.... I pushed/drilled a hole in the grommet by hand and fed the tube through. I did cut the zip-tie holding the loom behind the glove-box, for better access, but that was probably not necessary and I'll replace that. The jury is out on the DIN gauge plate I bought, but it does hold the dials.

The T-Piece is spliced into the FPR hose with fuel pipe clips to secure it -the pressure tube was a bit of a tight fit, even after softening it in boiling water -I'll fit a fuel pipe clip to that too though when I can get one.

Next stage, the wiring.....

I haven't fitted mine yet - they look good though! I ordered a DIN gauge holder off Ebay and wasn't impressed - I have another one on its way which looks better!

All the bits have arrived and are ready to fit - just need to get some time to do it!!

I plan to get the gauges in place and run the wires then worry about the connections!! Oil temp will have to wait til next oil change as it needs a replacement sump plug fitting. Boost should be relatively easy.

As for fuel/air ratio gauge I have no idea where to start - it needs to connect to an oxygen sensor - do I need to buy and fit one or does that car have one I can tap into. Maybe I should have gone for a different gauge!!! :)
