Fabia vrs fails to start

Featured Replies

My 3 yr old vrs which has behaved faultlessly since I bought it clearly doesn't like 2016 as it will not start.

What happens is the key goes in and when twisted various things operate including the fan, but the dash lights all remain off. If twisted to the start position the engine actually fires momentarily and then stops.

I have tried the spare key with the same results,  but I have not tried the fuses because I have no idea where to start.... it would need to be a whole stack of fuses gone for this result, wouldn't it?

All advice and suggestions most welcome!

Happy New Year,

Pete

Have you checked the battery? Sounds bizarre other things come on though not the dash and the engine tries to fire and then stops.

Hi Rich, no I haven't as there seems to be plenty of power in the battery, turns the engine over fast, lights come on etc., but I have seen that mentioned as a possibility on several posts, so I'll give it a go tomorrow.

Thanks

Pete

Still check the battery, check the tightness of the terminals.

(When you open the drivers door, that primes the petrol.)

Put all lights off including the DRL's if you can.

And the Heater Fan. Interior Light and radio,

Be sure the Gear shifter is in 'P' totally, but it probably is OK if it was starting to Fire.

(The car can be started in 'N' if the temperature is not too low, otherwise it is inhibited.)

Thanks, GO, I'll do as you suggest and report back tomorrow.

If there's nothing at all appearing on the dash could it have been some electrical failure between the dash and ecu? Sounds very odd the engine is turning over and then stopping when everything else is working. Could this be a fuel problem?

PeteBogg,

i had forgotten you have had your estate for all this time until i looked back at posts.

Just being nosey.

How many miles has it done now?

Did it need the DSG done as part of the Service Campaign?

Maybe it is new battery time.

Maybe new Fuel Filter time.

See how you get on with a fully charged battery.

(if doing a start with jump leads be very careful.  A booster pack is safer.)

I would also say battery ;)

Well, here we go, curiouser & curiouser....!  I went out this morning as soon as the rain had subsided sufficiently with  the intention of carrying out your suggestions, turned the ignition on... and I was greeted with all the usual panel lights.... so far so good, so continued to start and the engine burst into life, and everything was behaving as it should...!!

So what caused the failure yesterday?  My only theory is that we had enormous gales on Friday night from the SouthEast, and we are located on the south coast of Devon, with the car outside facing East, getting the full fury of the storm coming through the radiator grill.   Something critical...  (what...??) must have got damp, and during the lull in the storm yesterday managed to dry out.  We had the rain back last night but the wind was not  so strong and..... critically.... was from the normal direction of South West, from which we are partially sheltered and wouldn't have blown straight into the engine compartment.

So that's my theory, but it could be rubbish...  if anyone else has any better or more feasible ideas I'd be most interested.

Cheers,

Pete

Aren't you likely to get water going in through the grille at similar speed if it's raining when you're driving on a motorway?

  • Author

Absolutely, agreed.... that's why I am hoping to find the right reason.... it could happen again...!

Have you access to an OBD scanner? It would be worth looking to see if any faults have tripped. If not Im sure someone on here can point you in the right direction.

  • Author

No, TSI, I haven't access to an OBD scanner, what sort of a person would have one?

Cheers

Peter

Some members on here do, I'm not sure where abouts you are Pete. Without going to a dealer any independent garage would have diagnostic gear.

If you're nearby I may be able to help!
