On the motorway.......

Featured Replies

Ok, so these days I tend to sit in lane 1 with the cruise control on 60, tripping merrily along. I creep up on a car in lane 2 over-taking air, and has been for some considerable distance. It's a 3-lane motorway, with a reasonably constant stream of lane 3 traffic. (But nothing moving at warp 9)

What do other people do when this happens to them?

Do you move all the way over to lane 3, like the good book says you should do? (And hinder the progress of lane 3 in the process)

Do you move to lane 2, in the hope that the other driver will wake up and see you? (And run the risk of plod pulling you for lane-hogging)

Do you stay in lane 1, as you've not deliberately moved in to lane 1 to overtake, and hope they get the message that lane 1 exists? (Which the good book says is a no-no.)

I've done all 3 dependant on my mood

Generally I hope beyond hope that a car travelling from lane 1, right across their mirror, overtaking them and then pulling back across 3 lanes infront of them will be enough to prompt movement out of the middle lane.

Other times (generally if lane 3 is busy) I'll pull out to lane 2 behnid them, if they don't pull over, give them a little flash, if they still don't pull over, lane 3 overtake, then a 3 lane change in front of them.

Other times if I really can't be arsed I'll just undertake them.

Or of course if i really can't be arsed i tend to just drive along in the middle lane oblivious to everything

Depending on my mood and the surrounding traffic I will sometimes just carry on in lane 1 at the same speed. Or all the way over and go around. I'd never just sit behind them unless I was doing it will full beams on and waving my arms like a nutter pointing to the left.

What I'd love to do is fit side rails to my car and just shove them over in to lane 1 :)

Most infuriating are the ones that pull over when you flash and immediately pull back in to lane 2 once you have passed them. WHY?!

I've done all 3 too.

I've found that all 3 sometimes 'wake up' the other driver and they pull into lane 1.

Sometimes just getting behind them in lane 2 and give them a few flashes on the headlights is enough.

Then you get the odd moron that just sits there oblivious.

Carry on in lane 1.

Overtake them in the right-hand lane, slow down so they overtake me again, and overtake them again.  Do this a few times and they get the message.

If they don't reverse the lanes, undertake in lane 1 and drift back behind them in lane 3.

Only issue with this is, you're altering your driving and progress, just to try and prove a point.

Why slow down? I wouldn't even waste my time.

In this scenario, I'll just pass them in Lane 3, move straight back over to Lane 1 and carry on with my day :)

First i disengage Cruise Control and take control of the vehicles throttle and make what ever action is required to safely continue on my way while avoiding anyone around that maybe has no idea what is going on around them.

So clear them then when safe CC might go back on.

I've done all 3 before now. Most of the time I'll indicate and move over to 3 and give a quick flash to wake them just incase their heads are in cruise control as well.

Ive been naughty before now (who hasn't?), coming back from Birmingham at night time and had a clown hogging the middle lane on the M6 for a good few mile at 50mph, clearly seen his lights in the distance with no intentions of moving over so I've simply undertook him (but ready to take drastic action if needed of course) and yes, still stayed in the middle lane. Going 50 mph in the middle lane is asking for trouble itself.

I would normally stay in lane one and undertake (if I have been established in that lane for a short while) but if the road is clear and i am in no rush I'll overtake in the fast lane and pull back into lane 1, slow down and get overtaken by the middle lane hogger and pull out and overtake again :p

Prob would avoid undertaking.

Someone that ignorant could well just change lanes without warning or looking.

I'd probably drop a cog and pass quickly in lane 3.

Way ooop here there are no 3 lane roads so I'd usually do what PastyBoy suggests, pull up behind, flash then toot and failing all that go under them.

You do get people that are either utterly oblivious to what is going on or are out to cause a bit of bother.

Being fair, I didn't find a lot of roads with 2 lanes when I was up there. :p :p

Har yes.

But you know what? There are some ;-)

I normally go from lane one to three, pass them then go back into lane one,i have sometimes just carried on in lane one & passed them but as others have said im always worried they could turn into me,normally they dont even move from lane two, they just carry on in lane two in their own little world.

Odd on the post #14, obviously you were not using the Trunk Roads.

Edinburgh / Forth road bridge to Perth is a 2 lane motorway, as is Edinburgh to Glasgow.

Glasgow to Perth 2 lanes Motorway and Dual Carriageway, Perth to Dundee 2 lanes, Dundee to Aberdeen is 2 lane Dual Carriageway as is

Perth to Inverness apart from the single carriageway sections.

What shocks me is if you are doing 60, the other car is doing more like mid 50s.  That's sort of lorry speed, so dangerous if lorries are going quicker than a middle lane hogger :o

If clear I will do first option, but not "too" close to the car, and ensure my path back to lane 1 is well indicated and clear to the person. :)

If that doesn't work, well sod them,  Hopefully they will be pulled over and fined under the new law on this. :)

I would go to lane 3 to overtake, increasing speed to match flow and then return to lane 1. Anything else isn't really worth the stress, you won't be able to change how they drive. Quite often I do find that if they notice you've gone all the way round and back into lane 1 and are still going faster than they are it gives them a big hint. I often see people pull in following this.

If you can claim that it is a congestion based situation and heavy traffic, or in a temporary 50 zone I will sometimes stay in lane 1. Often in these situations lane 3 is packed out and you'd be relying on people making you a gap, which can cause problems in itself. My driving these days tends to be about avoiding stress.

A more worrying habit I've seen developing is people hogging lane 3 at less than 65. That's when it gets really messy. At least if they're hogging lane 2 you have the option to overtake by the book as annoying as it may be.

I just stay in lane one and undertake the brain dead idiot,

Anybody noticed the new trend of people driving in the 3rd lane on deserted motorways,

Seen it a few times recently,

If im in xc90 i sometimes pull out behind them and light them up until they move

It would depend how close to London I was. If I was within 10 to 20 miles of the m25 or closer I would undertake like the majority of the lawless arrogant drivers down here. I've lived down here 3 years and am now used to the shocking driving habits here.

Anywhere else and I would probably do the right thing and move over to Lane 3.

The thing that really bugs me on the Motorways is the line of traffic in Lane 3 only doing 65/70 and the car in the front won't pull into lane 2.

Lane 1 empty, lane 2 1/4 empty, lane 3 full but travelling at 65.

Really gets my goat,

None of the above, set my sat nav to find a café and go have a coffee in the hope that I never encounter them again (my nearest motorway is the M90 120 miles away so i'm rarely on it)

Keep on it and cruise on by in lane 1 as already stated motorways are full of dicks who either have no clue how things work or genuinely believe that there car is like a train and can't manoeuvre out of the lane they are in.

I hate drivers who sit in the outside lane of a dual carriageway because they are turning right at the next roundabout that is 6 miles ahead.
