Stage 2+ on standard air intake? (vrs - tfsi)

Featured Replies

I am thinking of getting an ebay sports cat DP, high pressure fuel pump and a custom map, but sticking with the standard cat back exhaust and intake as I'd like to keep it looking and sounding oem.

Whilst it's tempting just to go and get a stage 1 map on it, it's at mid to high rpm that I'm craving more go. From what I can work out, stage 1 remaps offer a lot more low to mid rpm torque but not much of an increase at the top end.

So, is the standard intake going to present a significant bottle neck? And is "stage 2+" going to give me the extra top end grunt that seems to be missing as standard?

Thanks all!

Ko3 turbo will always run out of puff top end. You would need a k04 upgrade to keep going top end. But hpfp allows for better fuelling midrange and torque will be alot better at stage2+. The tfsi pump is abit limited as it can only supply 110bar as opposed to the 150bar on tsi.

I've got an intake on mine and a performance torque stage 1 remap. 50bhp more than standard. Pulls the same right up to the limiter now, no running out of puff which I hate also. I had the intake fitted before the remap and definately noticed a difference mid and top end were better than before.

Don't get too hung up on BHP figures (for the record 250bhp from a stage 1 is quite optimistic) - it's the drivability that counts and how that power is delivered (i.e. the torque curve) that dictates how fast your car will feel.

I took my old TFSI from standard eventually to Stage2+ at just under 280bhp but I honestly wouldn't recommend it. To answer specific questions, standard cat back will be fine but you will need an aftermarket intake to make use of anything further than stage 1. For true Stage2+ you'd also need to swap out the intercooler.

It sounds like your car is currently standard - so even a bog standard stage 1 map will literally feel night and day. As I've said on these forums before, with hindsight and given a TFSI to tune again I'd stick a downpipe with sports cat on it, an after market intake and a Shark Stage 2; you won't believe the difference. Anything further than this and you're into new clutch territory - basically lost of expense for relatively (compared to lower states of tune) small gains.

Where my knowledge runs dry (as I had my TFSI a number of years ago) is whether one of the K03/K04 hybrid turbos available makes financial sense when comparing with the cost of the above.

Also worth bearing in mind that tuning the TSI yields better and cheaper results - so there is possibly an argument to sell your current car and buy a later model if the figures stack up.

Thanks for the replies guys.

As far as I know the car is currently standard, it does pull surprisingly well though, spinning the wheels in the wet in 3rd easily. Is this normal for a stock car?

Timmy, thanks for your experience. You've not yet put me off though, part of me wants the clutch to go so I can use it as an excuse to fit an lsd! I am now wondering whether a diy k04 conversion could be on the cards. I could do it for a good bit less than an upgrade to a tsi car I think. Or should I just knock the pre-cat out and take it for a stage 1 map and see how it goes?!  Decisions decisions.....

I knocked pre cat out and had Shark stage 1.5 map on to take into account pre cat delete. Its cheapest option and according to maf readings it should be about 250bhp and shark quote 400nm torque so if its in this region il be happy. Its cheapest way forward without cost of full DP and also bit kinder on clutch. Ive had mine flash TC in 4th in dry on slightly broken surface. 3rd in wet will spin midrange easy. The difference it makes to driving it is amazing and it definately makes the mid range and top end very enjoyable its not so much about having revs but also a nice good bit of torque to go with it

yep i know 250bhp is high for stage 1 - i got before and after dynos 199bhp and 197 torque before then 252bhp after 283 torque after. nice wide power delivery - ive got the graphs around soewhere - if i can remember ill bung them up here. (that is on tesco momentum btw)

i like to go away from the crowd sometimes and i know Will at p-torque is very well regarded over at seatcupra.net and has a lot of experience with the mini championship and f1 which is why i chose him over shark.

Over the 2.5hr session he did 6 power runs and adjusted the map before he was happy.

ive never driven a shark mapped tfsi, but im extremely happy with mine now and would recommend him in a flash.

Sounds like a good result - Will is a good chap and does indeed have a sound reputation. He did my first ever remap on a '03 Leon Cupra (180, couldn't afford an 'R' :() back in 2007 - how time flies!
