Columbus WLAN Hotspot and client (no Premium WLAN) - how to bridge?

Finally got my L&K 2.0 TSI DSG last week. Love it.

 

I did not order Premium WLAN as I have tethering (hotspot) on my Android phone. I understand (and the Columbus manual seems to confirm) that without Premium WLAN it should still be able to bridge the two connections and anyone connected to Columbus Hotspot should be able to access the Internet though WLAN client which is connected via tethering. But it doesn't seem to work.

 

WLAN client connection works. WLAN hotspot works and devices can connect to it. But devices connected to Hotspot can't connect to internet.

[<geeky stuff] ipconfig reveals that the default gateway option is not supplied by the DHCP server in Columbus. [/geeky stuff]

 

I do understand that I could just connect devices to the phone hotspot directly, but then what's the point of Columbus WLAN client function?

I have just got around to setting up the Premium WLAN with integrated high-speed LTE internet, really struggled with this, I found the Skoda Columbus Manual quite confusing, with regards to your post,

So is it a glitch with an yet unknown solution or is it simply a useless feature? I mean what's the point in tethering if you can't use the host internet connection?

Does the Columbus need the apn settings from your network provider. You'll find them on the network screen on your phone.

No, there is no Network Settings in the menu. I think it's because there is no premium WiFi so no SIM card slot or rSAP.

The WLAN configuration menu allowed me to take my personal hotspot from my iPhone and rebroadcasted it to the car with the Columbus' SSID and password and passed through this connection. 

 

 

 

What drewpost confirms is that the network bridging is available even if the Premium WLAN is not specced. Therefore the "premium WLAN" option only adds the ability to use a SIM in the glove box to establish an internet data connection.

I've just nipped out to the car and set this up in 2 minutes so cant be that complicated !!

 

Basically tethered my HTC using its Hotspot to the Columbus then connected my iPad to the Columbus wifi.

Yes that works for me too, except any device connected to Columbus WiFi can't see the internet.

Yes you're right. It doesn't work. Devices connect to the Columbus WiFi ok. They pull a lease and all looks fine however it appears that's where the good news ends.

So why not just tether the iPad to the HTC - why bother with the Columbus in the middle?

Exactly.... This is what ive been doing... Just thought...Maybe if it worked I could benefit from the extra sensitivity of an external  antenna ... Nice thought but back to tethering as normal :-D

Good point ... I guess at a useless feature ... Like Coops says unless the cars built in antenna can boost the signal whats the point ? I'm guessing that antenna is missing unless you purchased Premium WiFi hence it dunt work !

I have Premium WLAN, EE Data SIM Purchased and installed into SIM Slot, managed to eventually get it set up, after much head scratching, mostly due to lack of set up information from EE, connected my iPad to my Skoda Wi-Fi Network, I checked my Download & Upload Speeds, 32Gig down and 20Gig Upload, also checked to ensure that I could connect to the Internet, checked out various web pages including Youtube Video downloading, no issues there, faultless downloading, no lag, it work very well.

 

I never tried the Columbus Tethering Option, so sorry I cannot help on this one.

I don't have premium. With my iPhone plugged in via usb I connected to the Columbus wifi with another device and had internet connection. I will try again tomorrow to ensure I wasn't dreaming

If it won't work that way, then the only possilbe use of Wifi for such use is Media Command app connection to control headunit from tablets or phones. 

Or streaming music/video from a device running as a media server.
