Nope.

Ha ha. Sorry bud. My gearbox is fine and it's been 0.5 c in the mornings here. I do find that some drives I think it is notchy, but more often that not its perfectly fine. Smooth and precise.

Mines always been like that 1st to 2nd when the gearbox is cold, just like the FR184 before it and my MK2 CR170.

I'm finding it mostly on 3rd and 4th they sometimes take 2 goes to select.

Yup, slightly notchy until the gearbox oil gets warmer.

Yes, feels a little "notchy" when it's cold.

3rd gear on mine - dealer adjusted the gear linkage and all fine now.

I find mine is also a little slow to react on really cold mornings as well. Its ok once it warms up though.

that's definitely not good mate or normal. But then I have no idea how many miles / age of your car.

Its been fine until now its got cold. Sept 2015 car with 1800 miles on it, so I guess its still quite a new gearbox.

Out on the open road its ok, but urban driving the gear change indicator asks you to change to 4th for example at quite low speeds, if you put a bit more speed on the change is smoother.

Like most higher gear changes, if your going a bit faster the gearbox works more smoothly

While some will answer it's not good or normal, I am afraid it is fairly common across all manufacturers. Just Google 'gearbox oil on cold days'

My late Grand Vitara suffered the very same problem. It was a known problem so I had the gearbox internals replaced, outwith warranty but subsidised by Suzuki, and the new parts (or was it just the new oil) were better...not brill but easier to engage. My outlay was £1000. Boy that GV 1.9 cost me a lot of money.

Expect it will be back to normal when it warms up. If so I will have my answer!

Pleased to see this post because I was actually considering asking about it. Extremely notchy for me yesterday in 1st and 2nd and i think it was hugely noticeable getting in after a week in a hire car. I'm not sure how cold oil would cause notches? Stiffer gears I can see but actual notches?

Still, it fills me with nostalgia from my old Fiat Uno.

The gearbox on my Octavia has been notchy from day one. The gearbox on my previous Fabia was the best I've ever had, so this is a disappointment - probably the only let down of the car.

You don't actually do what the gear change indicator says do you? .....its only there to aid in getting maximum economy, it does not however take into consideration what is best for the car. Labouring the engine in top gear at 30mph may use less fuel but strains the engine gearbox and drivetrain.

Don't listen to the car drive it how it's the smoothest and if that means staying in a gear then leave it there. My Vrs hasn't seen 6th yet as its not been on a motorway.

It's notchy in my Fabia III too... Is there anything that can be done about it?

I take it you guys are talking manual gearboxes, my 7 speed dry DSG feels the same whatever the weather.

Regards

No I'm not that stupid.

Just saying that driving in an eco style seems to make it worse.

If you give it some beans, changes are a lot smoother.

Better when warm, much better after several thousand miles and better still after first annual service. (But no idea why!)

It would have been adjusted during the service...

This. After every service mine feels like it's had a new gearbox. Lovely.

My gearbox is an absolute disgrace, my previous two Octavias were always bad going from 1st to 2nd when cold, but this one takes it to a new level, it is also terrible going from 3rd to 4th and basically clatters / crashes into 4th the majority of the time even when hot.

When I complained at the first service, as usual the tester couldn't find anything wrong! They did supposedly make an adjustment and 3rd to 4th does not crash all of the time now but some of the time.

I am convinced that properly set up selectors would cure all this but it is difficult to make anyone care unless you actually have a broken bit in your hand!

I am having this exact problem to what is otherwise an excellent car, I have only had the car 4 weeks and have noticed the 1st to 2nd shift poor when cold. After the car is warmed up, about twice as long as the engine takes to heat up the shifts are much better.

I approached my local dealer and was given the impression this was a historical problem with octavia, but everything I have read contradicts this.

This seams to be common across all vague cars, it seams there is 2 oil options for this gear box a 75w90 and a 75w80 I think. My dealer said he had not heard of this how ever it seams to be well known issue for vw and audi. Basically it's viscosity is nearly half when cold , and the result is a smooth gearbox.

All I am thinking of is am I knackering my g box using the oil in there. The dealer seams to be no help at all.
