Headlight adjustment - Technical help please!

Featured Replies

Morning all,

Some techie input please...

Is the manual vertical headlight adjustment for the Xenon headlights just the white allen key bit that's accessed through the hole in the wing, or is it the one further in next to where the removable cover is??

Don't want to mess with the horizontal by accident!

Attached a photo.

Cheers.

Not sure on the Octy but on the Golf the upper (white) adjuster does the horizontal and the lower  (inside) one does up/down

Only adjust them in the dark when parked on a level surface against a vertical wall, you can then see the movement clearly.

I wouldn't adjust that if you have xenons.

With the mk1 and mk2, if you have xenons, you have to put them in "learn mode" with VCDS before making any adjustments to the height.

I imagine it's the same on the mk3.

Surely that would be the same as the Golf then?

Octavia5 have you adjusted yours without plugging in?

I just can't be bothered with another trip to the dealer as it's only a minor adjustment - they fitted a new headlight yesterday and to me the leveling is very slightly off.

If you have halogen lights with the manual height adjustment wheel, you can adjust your headlights no problem.

As xenons have auto-levelling, the car needs to know where the light is for the auto levelling feature to work, hence it has to be put in learn mode before any changes are made.

Find a local member with VCDS who can put the car in learn mode before you adjust it.

Thanks for the reponses softscoop.

From speaking to the technician yesterday, the car only needs to be plugged in to make the base adjustments e.g. the maximum tolerances and to set the lights to zero when the suspension is level. The adjustments from there are then done as normal on the MOT ramp.

Now just need to know which of the adjusters is for vertical and which one is for horizontal!

Unless anyone has experienced any problems doing it?

See above post - does anyone know which part of the Xenon headlight is the vertical adjust, and which one is the horizontal?

I know someone has made adjustments to their Xenons on here without plugging into VCDS - garage told me yesterday the bumper has to come off to make any adjustments, which is bull!

Was that the same garage that said you could make manual adjustments without first putting them in 'learn mode'?

If it is only slightly out and you aren't getting flashed by other drivers I'd leave it until the car is next in at the dealers.

Just picked up on this as mine have been adjusted to be perfect apart from the main beam!

To get the light a decent way up the road on dipped (without dazzle of course), the main beams end up pointing (slightly) up the trees!

is there separate adjustment for the dipped and the main beams?

Park against a wall, take your allen key and adjust one turn on one of the adjusters. Look at the wall and see if the light is rising. If not take it back one turn and try another!

How hard can it be?

You dont need vcds to do this. I have done it on mine and one turn was about perfect.

Have done so but it appears that the same adjustor controls the height of both the dipped and main beams?

Well of course as it's the same light for both with just a shutter for main beam.

... and to get the throw down the road, the main will always have its lower limit at the top of the dipped beam. No change possible.
