DSG Auto to Sport

Featured Replies

evening, a question I've been meaning to ask about the DSG box...

say I was on the move driving in Auto (D)...whilst still on the move can I put it into S mode without breaking anything?... I know I can use the paddles to upshift/downshift for a short time before it reverts back into full Drive.. but can it be put into S with the shifter ?...

Cheers

yes you can and no it want break it! i use mine all the time

Yes I use mine all the time too :)

Changing from Drive to Sport just changes parameters in software, does nothing mechanical so perfectly safe at any time.

If you try to do anything with the DSG selector and it shouldn't be done..... The electronics won't allow it.

Perhaps reading the manual would help you understand the DSG modes.  You don't say whether your car is a petrol or diesel.  Sport mode is almost useless on the diesel as it then holds the gears beyond useful revs.  You can also shift in and out of Manual mode.

I shift into sport on the approach to roundabouts and corners etc as it changes down sooner to give some engine braking.

It can also help round bends and roundabouts as it holds the gear longer and provides more control.

I agree...............However a sportier (somewhere in between) mode would be welcome.

My D mode changes up too early if driving with a light foot. I have tried resetting the box.

And better (slightly higher) gear ratio's on mine would make for a quieter cruise. First gear seems almost unnecessary - changes into 2nd if just rolling with no acceleration.

If you have the paddles these allow you to change down AND keep both hands on the s/wheel.  However, I find that under light braking my car changes down as I slow down without the need for me to 'interfere'.

I also find as I approach certain junctions a quick pull back into sport of the lever also helps give a better throttle response, for getting out of the junction or onto the roundabout too. Then knock it back to normal straight after to revert to docile mood again.

The paddles are fine for giving engine breaking if you have them but it does not give the better throttle response sport does :)

On the Octavia (at least up to 2013) using Sport mode on the DSG has no effect on throttle response, just holds the gears to higher revs.

i hated, and never used sport mode initially.

then i got a dsg performance tune......

......now i absolutely bl00dy love it!!!   its borderline addictive now  :p

I tend to do the same as Phil when approaching junctions and roundabouts.

Whilst sport mode doesn't alter the throttle mapping like it does on the newer car, it can prevent the car changing down to such a low gear that it gets bogged down when you try to accelerate out into a gap.

As good as the DSG gearbox is, sometimes humans know best :)

Oh on my car (Golf R) pulling the lever back into sport, instantly makes the throttle pedal more responsive, loosing the 3" of travel before anything happens and increases the revs at idle by a couple hundred.

It also does the same as the others have mentioned and holds the gears longer keeping it where it needs to be ;)

Agreed, on a petrol probably very useable. :) .

Having said that, mine is ten years old now. Hopefully sport mode on newer diesel's are more suited to the diesel engine, regarding gear ratio's and gear change time re rpm. ie change without over-revving.

No paddles as mine is an Elegance PD105 and not a vRS :(

Oh yes! VRS CR 2012, and sport mode on always when I'm driving alone and feeling.. spirited :) Tried it once and hooked ever sense.

Makes a big difference. Also very nice on the highway for overtaking.

Also even on a diesel sport mode is faster.

I did some tests a while back from 0-60 in both D and S.

In D- took 12.00 seconds to 60:

In S- took 10.2 seconds to 60:

This is with the dsg tune in sport mode....
