Unless you go to a proper track / airfield and do a proper acceleration test, it's almost impossible to determine. The scooby is hardly a slow machine, but if he was half a second slower on the throttle, then to about 60-ish the Furby would probably lead . . . then the scoob would storm past.

I'm sorry, but I honestly don't know where people seem to get the idea that a 130bhp diesel car which weighs about 1300kg is a match for a 225bhp petrol car which weighs about 1400kg. . . .

Sounds very nice though, very un-diesel ;)

I always though my Furby sounded nice and un-diesely when driving it. Nice growl, a teensy bit like the induction noise from an old Alfa, I like to think.

Having heard a Golf diesel driving pretty quickly the other day, though, there's no mistaking it's a diesel from the outside! :D

Sounds like a white van man who's rushing for his tea break!

errr did i not say i'd love one and that it is a better car?

even tho you still had to post on scoobnet to just ensure that your car was in fact better than that Imprezza?

And as Kentish said, it was still a dangerous thing to do...

Having been pinned to the seat of a Prodrive Impreza on full throttle I can say that any VAG TDi is nowhere near it in terms of outright acceleration!

Fond memories of following a scoobie round anglesey, was a bug eye and tuned...down the short straights he'd open up a gap then I'd close on braking and cornering.

Now this wet road racing malarky, can't comment but it's up to the driver to use sense. TBH if it's wet that when I play with limits as they are way down on what I'd have to do in the dry....eg 100+ round a bend to get understeer versus about 40 in the wet.

Also the author did not post the link.

A few cars are better than the imprezza, but you'll have to spend some to add an oil burner to the list.

Everyday driving or spirited road driving on equal terms not a huge amount in it though....you need a lot more power to make a big difference on road driving given equal external parameters like keeping to nsl, both drivers knowing the roads, safe distances etc...

I could easily leave a 22B behind if I knew the road and that drvier did not...just as I've been left for dust by local nova drivers on the evo triangle as I don't really know how tight that blind crested turn really is, do now mind, good old esp. Or a Tourag v10 oil burner on the M42 with a brdc badge...I could keep up when he booted it, but I suspect that was 1/16th throttle usage, still smokey mind...got him on the M40 slip though :D But no way would I try to say our cars were equal because I kept up, but I did :D and round we go.

You get the idea, we all at some point; well ok not all, the joy's of a mixed forum have played with other cars on the road in varying conditions. Balls and lack of brains I find plays the largest part in performance on road, and thats the balls to ignore your brains as I find most stupid people get left behind on the Indy style start I use :D.

Good comment Colin:

I got spanked yesterday by a P Reg Escort with a huge wing and loud exhaust...

Not sure if it was turbo'd or not, I'd like to think it was because of the unburnt fuel smell and loud pops on gearchange, but either way, the thing that won it for him was his big brass balls and, or, lack of brains...

I knew that there was a car coming towards us in the distance, so being a fairly sensible driver, I pulled in and slowed down... He on the other hand kept going.

It's that sort of thing that wins "street races"... The "I don't give a monkeys" attitude. Sadly I don't have this attitude, so I often come out as the looser, even if I have the faster/better handling car.

Anyway, Bug Eyed Impreza WRX's are pants, pretty much everyone knows it and they are known as being the runt of the Impreza litter.

Other WRX's, P1's, STI's, 22B's Etc etc etc are all pretty fast cars.

Get a tuned 4x4 1.8T against a standard one though and it becomes a closer contest.... However they're like us! They can remap, BT, etc their cars and they become blisteringly fast!

Horses for courses... I much prefer VAG cars to Imprezas, even if they're slower and don't go round corners as well as them.

And forgot to say, thats a pretty tame video by some standards hhehe goes off to find video disks...

oh we didn't video the Northern runs...a crying shame.

Very Intersting comments about my video. I agree it wasnt too safe to do it, that is why i didnt post it up here (someone found it on google) Also it was a one off as I dont get a chance to see him much and we want to compare cars.

I dont understand how some of you are saying it is impossible!......i havent edited the video!! My car is remapped the wrx just has an exhaust. It was a pretty close run thing id go as far as to say there as very little if nothing in it as he agreed and i had another person in my car.

I have never said the fabia is a scooby beater and if it came to a corner he would be gone!!! I have found out my remapped Vrs is a match for the slowest WRX version on a straight.

I dont think a 130bhp diesel car is a match however my remapped 180bhp against a 215bhp WRX which is loosing alot of power through its 4wd is nearly a match on a straight as the video suggests

At the risk of being flamed, as per on this subject, I like subaru's. Alot. I fell in love with a WR1, and almost bought it. I've had a play in a boggo wrx, and it was poo. Handling was awsome, as was stopping, but acceleration was nothing to sing and dance about. And the car in the vid was a boggo wrx. 225 bhp. Even though it's on video, some poeple still have to argue the toss with the guy, and he didnt even post the link up. We arent talking prodrive prepared rally car,a 225 subaru, up and running against 300+ ft/lbs of torque. It's more than a match. Get over it.

as a WRX is 'only' 225bhp with 4wd. What is the real world difference between a 180bhp Octaivia and a Leon Cupra R or an Audi TT 225?

subaru's claimed figure of 225bhp is net, i don't know about anyone else but for me net means after deductions so their 225bhp claim sounds to me like its power at the wheels.

the saloon does 5.9 0-60 and the estate does 6.1

I'm not saying you are wrong Bengie, as I don't know, but why would Subaru quote WHP, when all other manufacturers quote power at the flywheel?

no idea dave but if you look here you'll see what i mean :)

The power they quote is at the flywheel as the engine will be bench dyno'd out of the car to get an accurate figure, not measured on a rolling road. I think the word "net" just means total in this sense :D The cars definitely don't have 225bhp at the wheels ;)

I thought not. Thanks for clearing that up.
