Original Amundsen problems - anyone else?

Featured Replies

The Amundsen in my 2014 Octavia is getting increasingly temperamental.

I've had the problem with the screen responding to phantom touch input on cold mornings which the dealer has agreed to replace but there are several other problems which they can't fix.

The most common one is when you connect an iPhone to the MDI port, quite often it will crash the stereo completely and it just turns off for a couple of minutes. It does this with a 5S, 6 and 6S.

I've had it go completely unresponsive so you can't swap between different modes, or carry on playing media files even though it's showing the radio display on the screen. It's also gone part way into reversing mode with a black screen and the warning disclaimer but nothing else on screen even though I was driving forwards and then parked and wouldn't switch out of it.

I'm basically being told by the dealer that Skoda won't authorise any work on this or replacement of the hardware as it's going to require a software update to be written. It's been updated to the current version but that hasn't fixed it.

I'm going to log a case with Skoda, but I was wondering if anyone else has had the same sort of problems.

Sounds like usual Skoda dealer bull.  Mine is running the latest firmware and it's better than it has ever been.  It's still clunky in operation as they all are, but has otherwise been very stable.  Mine doesn't have the MDI socket though.

The MIB2 unit in the car I had yesterday, now that's another story!

I had similar problems with my Bolero, numerous software updates and a new media control unit over two years didn't seem to fix the issue. My dealer phoned round numerous dealerships as Skoda technical kept fobbing them off. They were eventually told by one dealership to check the connector blocks on the back of the head unit as damaged pins could be the issue. A check of mine and new connector blocks fitted appear to have solved the issue.

I think the mdi port and some apple products is somewhat flaky.

I have recently experimented with this aspect but more in respect of file formats.

I have the RNS 510 (Columbus) head unit and at one point it did part of what you describe using the MDI/Apple 30 pin cable. Unplugging and reconnecting cured it.

So I connected an iTouch loaded only with MP3 files and that had no problems.

I also have a MDI/USB cable and loaded a USB drive with files and that has been no trouble at all...NON APPLE input.

I've got a case open with Skoda now, and when the dealer phoned me back today I mentioned what you said. They seemed very interested and promised to check it out.

I have the Amundsen on a 2014 model and get intermittent mdi lead issues, where the unit would be playing my ancient (but loved) iPod classic flawlessly - I can finish my journey and when I get back in the car the head unit doesn't recognise the iPod anymore. Unplug and plug back in usually is the cure........sometimes not and you have to disconnect at the iPod end. It is slooooow to react to screen touches, only slightly better than the Bolero I had on my older Octy. Next gen my a@rse!

Also I get the DAB drop outs, but probably because it's the estate. But one other DAB gripe is listening to 5 Live Sports Extra for example, when you get back in the car it's reverted back to normal 5 Live and vice versa. Grrrr

I have the latest firmware update via a kindly member but as its a company car I've not had the bottle to update. I wish I'd gone for the Columbus upgrade now.......

I have MIB1 Amundsen in my Octavia....also have the MIB2 equivalent with carnet in my Mk7 GTD.

Dont think for a minute the MIB2 doesnt have its issues....if anything mine is more cantankerous than the MIB1.

Sometimes it comes on with no screen...screen still bleeps but has sound....other times it comes on with the screen but no sound...both require a 10 sec power button hold reset to sort out. My DAB is nothing special and some days just decides not to hold a signal just for the sake of it...hit and miss whether the reset clears it. Sometimes the car just has to sit switched off for a while to sort itself out. The MIB1 rarely mucks about only v occasionally.

The Golf has already had a firmware update and the cars only 4 months old....but that said its better than it was but not perfect.

When its working its nice though....by some weird omission the Golf doesnt come with voice control as standard....its crap and annoyingly poor anyway but sometimes using the touchscreen on the move is quite unsafe...given all the software/hardware is there and it just requires dealer activation its all a bit pants. So the Octavia does get one up on the Golf there!

...that said and done I do recall that the Amundsen+ with DAB installed in my Mk2 blackline every now and again would refuse to get DAB signal for reasons unknown. Again the ignition had to be left off and the car locked for a period of time before it would start working again which annoyed me no end.

I wish I'd gone for the Columbus upgrade now.......

The MIB1 Columbus is no better really. Screen going mental on cold mornings, DAB reception up and down like a ..............
