6'6" width restrictions and how I hate them :)

Featured Replies

Am I the only one who started absolutely hating these after buying the new Superb?

Car width with mirrors: 2031 mm

Without mirrors: 1864 mm

6'-6" = 1981 mm

With folded mirrors we have just (1981 - 1864) / 2 = 58.5 mm of space from each side - just over two inches!

And the radar sensors go absolutely berserk while driving through these...

Superb is a decent size car though, can't say I've ever seen these on any UK roads I've driven on, maybe unlucky?

This.. there are plenty of cars on the road a faction wider too!

But isnt the actual width set at 6 inches above the shown values? So 6'6" is actually no less than 7'0".

Interesting point however is that as the car exceeds 6'6" should it pass thru such a gate as you show in your picture?? One for the ex blue lights on here.

I bet the one on the entrance to Heathrow Terminal 4 has given a few people heart attacks as they have approached it.

Easier in a van - the mirrors go over the top of the bollards :)

The one controlling access to Brunel's Three Bridges at Windmill Lane near Hanwell, London is particularly horrid - I am going through this every day. Luckily at the moment someone's trashed both the iron posts :-)

There is one in London Colney, close to one of my depots, that's a bit tight too.

There are loads of these where I live so I'll be taking different routes until I'm used to the additional width as I'll be moving up from a Fabia which is quite narrow.

Where are you going to find space to park a Superb in W'stow?

If you re buying from Transcity, getting out of their premises into Hoe Street can be a challenge!

(I used to live in Hoe St, 'til I got married & moved out into the depths of Essex....)

PS, Enjoy your new car, hope you ordered it with paddles....

In my area, the posts have been cut down so that door /wing mirrors

don't have to pass through them.

I feel even sorrier for anyone driving a Mondeo Mk 5, they measure 2121 mm over the mirrors, more than the new Mustang at 2080 mm!

Hi there DC, yes Transcity can be quite tight to get in and out of especially if you have to reverse out lol!

Fortunately I have off street parking where I live as I don't think that it would go in my lockup garage and in any case I have a motorcycle in there which has to be garaged if you know what I mean.

I have ordered the paddles and I'm looking forward to delivery in March.

It's tricky. Worst for me is Jacksons Lane in Highgate. Never doing that again!

There's a car park at the Bakers Arms in Leyton that has a width restriction at its entrance which is also at an angle to the road making it all the more difficult to negotiate; fortunately somebody removed the emergency exit barrier so I always use that ;)

This one is pretty tight in Cowbridge.

These restrictions are made by local authorities and known as Local Traffic Orders (LTO), made under s.1 Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.

Local authorities are required to consult with police when applying for a LTO but are not required to heed anything the police may say on the matter.

The general attitude of the police is that most LTOs should be self-enforcing (bollards/posts/ramps/barriers or, in the case of the OP's picture, church bells???) and those LTOs put in place against the advice of police are unlikely to receive enforcement.

Will you be prosecuted as per your example? Extremely unlikely and if so it would be for contravening an LTO (a £50 non-endorsable FPN).

In reality I can't envisage any officer stopping a car that successfully negotiated a width restriction and then getting out his tape measure to prove the offence (unless he's called Albert Hippler or similar and has a funny little 'tache).

Were you to get stuck, however, that might be different.

If your actions cause serious traffic disruption, either by getting stuck or making a pigs ear of trying to turn around (bearing in mind there is always advance warning), then you could also face driving without due care and attention/reasonable consideration for other road users (endorsement and/or disqualification).

I should point out that this applies to anywhere except Greater London, which has separate legislation.

This one is pretty tight in Cowbridge.

That sign is actually illegal as it's in metric only (has to be imperial or both) but try explaining your way out of that if you got stuck :-D

Our Superb came to a screaming halt when negotiating the width/height barriers as tvthe marshaling point on the Eurotunnel at Folkstone. Approached the barrier at about 10mph then suddenly car applied it's brakes, horn sounded came to a halt, lucky the airbags didn't go off. After a quiet rethink the car decided it was OK to go through the gap and on we went. Can't wait for the return journey.

Wow, In Belgium I've never seen any of these kind of width restrictions on a normal road. Only when you have to go through a "gate" (like Jaytips example) but even then they are usually only blocking trucks.
