Add-a-fuse for dashcam - mini or micro spade size?

Featured Replies

Awaiting delivery of L&K hatchback, build wk 10 so hopefully coming soon...

Want to be prepared for fitting my dashcam (minio806), intending to use an add-a-fuse to take a switched 12v supply from the fuse box . Can anyone tell me if I need a micro or mini sized fuse?

TIA.

I used Mini on the Yeti, I would guess the Superb is the same.

This is interesting as I intend to hard wire a front and rear dash cam when the new car is ready to collect.

Looking in the manual, there appears to be a mixture of mini and micro fuses. You can see from the picture in the manual and the corresponding fuse schedule, which ones are which. The 12 power socket fuse (No.40) - which should be permanent - appears to be a mini sized fuse. Personally, I keep a few of each lying around just to be certain. Nothing worse than pulling a car apart only to find you haven't got the right bits!

yeah - I wired one in at the weekend, and used a micro 5amp with a fuse tap.

Which fuse should I use if I want the camera to go on and off with the ignition. ie to switch on and off with the starting/stopping of the car,

On my Mk2, I connected to the fuse that serves the dimming interior mirror. That's an ignition only power supply. On the Mk.3, Fuse no. 8 is a micro fuse (according to the drawing in the manual!) and serves the light switch, rain sensor and so on.

Remember to fit a fuse for the dash cam that's just above and as close as possible to it's maximum current draw. Otherwise you are relying on a much bigger fuse to blow in the event of a fault or over current issue in the dash cam which would potentially overheat the (no doubt quite thin) power cable to the camera.

i'll take a pic later today to show which one I tapped (I tested with a multimeter to get one that was ignition switched)

the draw for 5v @ <1a is pretty small, so you can piggy back on just about anything

Out of interest why do you all want to piggy back from a switched live instead of a permanent?

If you wire to permanent the camera will record when you leave the car to go and do the asda big shop and perhaps catch that t@#t that scrapes your bumper or opens their door into yours!

The current they draw is tiny so I can't see it draining a big heavy duty battery

I want to tap a fuse for a switched connection. I'm installing a Raspberry Pi so need 5v at max 3A.

I'm looking at this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00MH4ZVHO to provide the voltage/ampage but not sure which fuse to tap into in the fuse box.

Any help appreciated.

Search and you will find, saw another thread and position 48 fits the bill. I don't have blind spot detection so it's perfect...

Is 48 a mini one?
