A question about the dash......

Featured Replies

After participating in a thread over on the Mk3 Octavia section, I have a question about the Mk3 Superb. I suspect I won't like the answer.......

Does the Mk3 Superb have a 'headlights on' icon on the dash? SWMBO's vRS doesn't, and it irritates the hell out of me.

Not on the dash but the switch is illuminated when they are on.

A simple but nice feature the mk2 Superb has, I wonder why the mk3 doesn't have it.

I think it's a silly having that on the light switch which is right out of your line of sight. Having it on the dash means it's very quick, safe and easy to tell if they are on or not. Then you can get on with the whole driving thing.

Lets face it, some people need all the help they can get. Notice how many people you see on the roads with no lights on these days? Seems to be much worse now DRLs are commonplace.

In my partner's now sold VW Polo, the light switch was above the dash board waist line to the right of the steering wheel. This is a good idea until it gets dark because the lit up symbols on the standard rotary switch reflects on the side window exactly in the line if sight of the door mirror, so bit of a distraction, especially if trying to reverse in the dark.

Back to the Superb though, if you have auto lights on, why not just leave it on this setting, just being mindful that you may need to go to manual for foggy conditions. And yes, how many cars do you see with no rear lights on in the dark. Yes drls definitely the culprit along with permanently light instrument cluster needs cos they look posher!

A few threads on this over in the MkIII Octavia forum. I was lambasted for suggesting the removal of the headlight symbol in the dash was a backwards step too.

It was pointed out to me that I must be stupid, even after explaining that the steering wheel obscures the light switch on my MkII Superb so the on-dash warning is very useful...

Seems to be a common theme on all new models including the MkIII Superb.

It is hardly surprising so many people drive around with only DRL's on, the dash dials lit up like a Christmas three, the DRL's reflecting off the car in front, all giving the simple driver the impression their headlights are on.

So what do Skoda do, remove the last remaining visual indication that the headlights are turned on.

Simply clever? Not this time Skoda.

Every car I've ever driven since passing my test has had the little green headlight icon. Even my crappy little Fiat Panda had it!

I appreciate the comments about auto lights and my last 4 cars have had that feature - along with the symbol to say the lights are actually on. I don't always drive with my lights set to auto so the visual indicator on the dash is a useful and quick reminder.

Most people will see this as a non-issue but I wonder what the reason is for removing it in the first place? It's not like there's an extra wire to the dash now is it!

This is a note made in the manual about lighting

If the visibility is poor and the lights are not on (except daytime running light) the brightness of the instrument lighting reduces to alert the driver to switch on the lights in due time.

The Mk2 does this as well. All of the dials go dark except for the needles. Some other makes don't do this. The whole dash stays lit up irrespective of the lighting or external brightness. Hence the morons driving around with no lights on.

Spot on, picked this up on my company Octavia, wondered what was going on with the instrument lighting, as you entered dark areas such as lanes with overhanging trees, the instruments would dim, just leaving the needles illuminated.

This has always annoyed me slightly, using the left hand drive light switch panel instead of making a right hand version so the switch is nearest the drivers door and in view. Maybe that's why we get the dash light.

BMW haven't had a lights on indicator for more than 10 years now.....and as with the S3 switch, their little auto light 'on' tell-tale is invisible behind the steering wheel! But they don't have the dashboards lit so you can't (shouldn't? ) miss the fact your lights are off.

I'll think you'll find they do. The wife's BMW 3 series (2 1/2 years old) has a lights on lamp on the dash, just like my MK2 FL Superb.

I'll think you'll find they do. The wife's BMW 3 series (2 1/2 years old) has a lights on lamp on the dash, just like my MK2 FL Superb.

Must have re introduced it as the older ones didn't. Neither one of my previous 3 series or my wife's current 330 has an indicator, the lights just come on when it gets dark. Her previous car had manual lights(mx5) and no indicator although with pop up headlights it was pretty obvious when they were on lol

MIne (F30) has an indicator as well (green light left of the speedometer). I don't really understand why they would remove the sign.

That's the one, same as the wife's car. Maybe they reintroduced it for the F30 model - who knows. Either way I find it useful, just so you know.

My switch is in Auto at all times. So I don't really care.

Perhaps you should care, your switch may be in auto but your lights might not be on when they should be.

If we all took a bit more care people wouldn't be driving around in the dark, rain or fog without lights on.

The lights are always on, when it is required. That's the purpose of having the sensor - which has never failed. So I still sont think an indicator is necessary.

The sensor can easily be fooled by fog, as its bright enough to think it's daylight despite visibility being reduced meaning your lights should be on.

This thread is at least good for one thing, identifying those that drive around with no lights on assuming the little sensor on the windscreen is infallible.

Fog is a great example of when not to rely on the light sensor.

When it's misty or foggy, I quite like to drive around with my headlights on, irrespective of whether it's day or night.

Once the fog has cleared, I also like to be reminded that my headlights are still on, and that it would be advisable to switch 'em off!

That's where a glance at that little green icon comes in very handy, rather than peering down at the switch to see what position it's physically in.

I have certainly had to turn mine from Auto to Manual in either drizzle or fog, even on its most sensitive setting.

Best place to ask this question: can i put the lights on "on" and will they go off when i leave the car (without alarm)? Or does this only work in "auto"?
