Scrapping a car

Featured Replies

Years ago the scrap man would give you a few quid for a scrapped car, but I don't know if that's still the case today?

I've got my Renault Clio special Moneypit edition for sale here in the Cars section. It's an utter piece of crap. I think it'd even fail at being a paperweight. I've already spent as much as I paid for it on various bits of stuff that's broken since I bought it in September. As soon as one thing gets fixed something else breaks.

What's the form on scrapping a car these days? Do I have to pay someone to scrap a car?

If you're taking it into a recyclers yourself, you'll get a few quid, but not a lot at all. Otherwise, yeah, unless a breaker wants it, you'll probably be paying them.

Stick it on eBay making it very clear your personal views on it, and what you know is up with it.  But also list what you've spent on it and what's new.  You might be pleasantly surprised, and it only needs one person who needs the good bits, to take it off your hands.

I advertised my last CRX as a complete rotbox, and my wife's Mk3 Golf.  Both were otherwise going to the scrapyard, and on both, the buyers were as happy as Larry.

My son had a car removed from our house cos it was Knackered. Wagon arrived, car lifted, sorted the paperwork out, car went.

He got a cheque for £96 a few days later.  They weigh the car and you get what its worth weight wise.

I'll see if I can get my mother in law in the boot then. That ought to double the price? And two birds with one stone.....

I'll send you Mrs Goldfinger, that'll be 3 birds with one stone.........

The price of scrap metal has fallen through the floor. 8 months ago my sisters partner was offered £300 in scrap for the A6 I am trying to sell, today I need to pay someone £50 to take it away as it costs more to collect and dispose of it than the car worth in weight. This is for a working car, in good condition except for a poorly CVT transmission.

For a Clio I would expect to pay for removal, more money thrown at the money pit even to throw it away.

2 months ago I had a shell removed, didn't get anything for it but removal was free thankfully.

I'd have thought you'd still get a bit for it with an engine etc? Will depend on your area I guess, the scrap place is 2miles from me so not much of a trip out for them to collect.

With a (diesel) cat and alloys, can be worth a bit.  Ultimately really the best thing to do is advertise the car in bits - people might want something.  If you can keep a cover over it whilst parts get sold gradually, then get shell taken for free is simply a bonus service.

Last Clio shell I scrapped I trailered out to them and still had to pay £10
