Oil filter plastic cap

Featured Replies

Some Muppet over tightened my oil filter housing cap at the last service, tried all the tools to no avail. Any ideas guys? 2008 skoda fabia 1.4 TDi estate.

I assume you are undoing it anticlockwise? If you can't shift with a proper tool then something is seriously wrong, probably cross threaded or more likely o ring incorrectly located (in the thread rather than the slot it should sit in)

I would be having a word with the garage that did it. They are responsible for incorrect work carried out and any damage that results.

The plastic cover is specced at 15nm which is little more than hand tight. In fact due to the design, the cap is sealed as soon as the o ring is fully in the housing. I screw the cap in until it hits the end stop by hand and no more. In 12 years doing this on fabia htp I've never had a leak and it comes off by hand each time.

The least the garage should do is loosen the cap and check for damage for free.

Maybe the smart money is on ordering in a new cap and making sure that you only ever use a hex, not bi-hex socket to take it off/on, then you will not be limited by which method you use to get that one off and into the bin?

Thanks guy's.

Sometimes it not the fact it's been overtightened, but just put back 'dry' without any oil on the seal and threads. It's makes it very difficult to undo. My 1.6 petrol is torqued to 25nm and it's very easy to get if off, as long as the lube has been used when fitted. If I remember correctly my 1.4tdi pd was 25nm.  New oil filter top kits for your car cost £11 so not expensive if you have to ruin it to get it off.

Just cracked the metal housing getting the bloody thing off! Ahhhhh car off the road... :wall:

Some poor advice here that maybe encouraged the op to continue having a go. He should still go and have a rant at the garage responsible, unfortunately as he has cracked the housing by his own efforts I doubt the garage will play ball. Maybe however they will offer help with a heavy discount on a new housing, cap and filter and access to the workshop manual. Fingers crossed.

I am with estate man one this one and recon it put back dry because it was bloody fused to the metal housing! Think I found a used housing on ebay for £20.00 if he accepts my offer. Just wondering about the gasket?

You will need a new gasket for the block mounting. They are pressed metal and compress to seal.

Ask garage to loosen cap for you, act a bit DAH!!

Bit late now but prior to loosening, warming it up slightly might help as will VERY slight tightening prior to loosening as this often "Cracks" the seal. This works on many hard to turn nuts, bolts etc. You can warm either by running the engine, using a blowtorch or using a hairdryer, depending on the location and heat baring item you are about to loosen. Also, take in to account location to fuel pipes and other combustible materials as using a blowtorch here, might just involve a large red lorry coming down your street, wailing loudly and soaking everything within a ten metre radius of your (Now barbecued) Pride and joy, in foam!
