Car advertised with Michelins Dealer not replacing like with like?

Featured Replies

The advert makes no mention of Michelins but does say "Exact specification may vary from the details on this page"

I, personally, don't think you have a leg to stand on even though you may feel hard done by - unless that is the tyres are the wrong size, speed or load rating.

At £13,295 another £250 ish for decent tyres (Rainsports or similar) won't break the bank...

I think I'd be concerned that the car would have 3 new tyres and 1 part worn, especially on a 4x4. As long as the tyres are a good make I think that would be ok, but I'd want 4 the same!

  • Ask him why Skoda only fit branded tyres in the factory.   Contact Skoda UK and ask them why one of their franchised main dealers is selling the most premium spec of their most premium model with ch

  • Looking at that pic, those michelins appear to have sipes, so have they left one winter tyre on one corner or replaced the other 3 with equivalent tyres? That's definitely something I would complain a

Bottom line. If it's a good car at sensible money and it's what you want then buy it. Do not let the tyre issue sway you either way.

Pride comes before a fall. In the overall context, this tyre issue is "de minimis".

I have a Superb on lease, if I returned this at the end of the lease with cheap Chinese tyres it would not be acceptable and I'd be charged for their replacement with a similar brand to those fitted when the vehicle left the factory.

I'd be very surprised at that - all lease companies will adhere to the BVRLA guidelines which advise:

  • Check the tyres (including spare) for damage. Check that the wear on the tread across each tyre is even. Inspect wheels, wheel trims and wheel spokes for scratches and deterioration.

To stipulate a specific brand is not acceptable. You change the air filter for a non-OEM version, is that acceptable? The car came out the factory on, say, Pirelli - is Michelin a similar brand? Hankook? Nokian? Where do you draw the line.

The tyres were worn beyond the legal limit and would have failed an MOT. The dealer replaced them with new ones, it passed an MOT. The dealer has not failed in any way. Yes we would all like dealers to use premium products but they have to make their profit (it's what they are in business for!)

Swallow your pride, buy the car if it fits the bill, and if you want replacement the tyres.

I agree with others comments, if its the model you want do not let it go for the sake of a make of tyre you are not familiar with or do not like the sound of.

You don't see too many L&K's for sale with DSG and 4x4.

The tyres may be very good, just because they don't have a brand you don't know doesn't mean they aren't any good. How many times do you see a car advertised with the brand of tyre specified in the advertisement - usually never, you just accept it has legal tyres fitted, then you go along to view it, and if you're happy you buy it. As you say you can always change them if you feel you need to.

To me its a bit like saying 'I'm not having a Skoda, I want a top branded car', when we all know they actually make very very good cars. Triple A tyres might be very good.

Don't let this spoil the overall 'I'm getting a new car' experience for you.

One thing I would do is look over the car very carefully inside and out while its still clean, check it has all the correct paperwork, service history etc, then insist on a test drive before signing any paperwork and make sure everything works as it should, climate control, heated seats, sat nav, television (if it has it) etc etc. See if it has a spare wheel, jack, and most importantly the locking alloy wheel nut.

Enjoy the city of Bath if you have time, its a really lovely place. Good luck with the new car.

Tell the dealer before you even set off down there. "Okay, you're being as awkward as you can be with me despite me wanting to pay you more money for the specification I'd be happy with. I'm going to be your worst ever customer if something goes wrong, something else isn't just as you say it is, something you say is present on the car or working correctly isn't so, or any other little intricacies I can find while I'm spending as long as possible going over the car with a fine toothcomb. Just so you know in advance, we can both be ****ty ******s if the need arises!"

Completely agree

It was just my eagle eye   that was looking for them in the original add on Skoda website that had massive Hi res pics and you could zoom in on them easily..and was discussed at initial point of contact..

Any way they have further got back to me saying saying they could fit other tyres at a cost that was still much dearer than I can buy them for myself even with there contribution applied to it...

So I will order 4 Unis for £217 when I get back , I even asked if I could keep the old Michelin in the Vast Boot  for a spare when I get a wheel...

So all's good :sun:  but that £217 could of went towards me upgrading my VCDS so that I can enable Hill Hold Control,XDS and all the other functions that should be as standard,,flappy paddles when I get hold of a steering wheel, mud guards front and rear, wind deflectors, wheel and jack, tow bar, roof bars and last but not least the Briskoda stickers for the windows.... :D

Thank you all for your input

I know this goes against every bone in your body but I personally wouldn't be too hasty in changing the tyres, look them up and see what ratings they get for noise, wet weather and grip, if they come out ok why not give them a go, you never know they might not be as bad as we fear, your not going to race them, the summers coming so it should be getting warmer and, er, drier!

Why spend over £200 on 4 new tyres when it's got 4 new tyres on it!!

If it wasn't for seeing Michelins in the pics do you think you'd be changing the tyres if had come with 4 new Three-A tyres from the start?

Ok mate, fair do's, sounds like you know what your talking about, sounds hypocritical after what I wrote but personally would only have tyres I know too but I know plenty of people who use budgets due to money constraints and seem happy! Thought it might be worth a try but can totally understand why you'd be wary!!!

Only use quality tyres as has been noted above safety comes first, then rolling resistance and noise. Not all necessarily in that order as  two of those point usually only come from quality tyres.

Cheap and very cheap tyres do not come with those three points.

Only for dry days? :D

The combi came with a detachable rechargable torch in the boot. It looks like one of the boot lights but comes out as a torch (The twindoor didn't get this feature)....

And in the rear passenger side door when opened there is a space for an umbrella. I'll admit mine didn't come with it.... (I have purchased an umbrella from Next that has the exact same measurements as the Skoda one but at a fraction of the cost).... but i didn't push it too far as in my case the dealership had given me a few other things etc.... but with these guys you are dealing with being a bit more funny i think i wouldn't let it slip.

DEL80Y - I assume you now have your Superb sat on the drive. What are your impressions of the car?. Bath to Glasgow for your first drive certainly gives you a chance to try it out.

7918 is V9, then there's been V10, V11, V12, and currently pn V13. Your sat nav has not been updated  (did I mention this at all...?)
